An artificial neural network application on nuclear charge radii
The artificial neural networks (ANNs) have emerged with successful
applications in nuclear physics as well as in many fields of science in recent
years. In this paper, by using (ANNs), we have constructed a formula for the
nuclear charge radii. Statistical modeling of nuclear charge radii by using
ANNs has been seen as to be successful. Also, the charge radii, binding
energies and two-neutron separation energies of Sn isotopes have been
calculated by implementing of the new formula in Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB)
calculations. The results of the study shows that the new formula is useful for
describing nuclear charge radii.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Effects of Vitamin D levels on asthma control and severity in pre-school children
OBJECTIVE: Prevalence of asthma and Vitamin D deficiency has been increasing and leading to significant morbidities. This study aimed to compare the Vitamin D levels in the pre-school children with asthma and in healthy controls and to assess the relationship between Vitamin D levels and asthma clinical parameters and control. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Vi tamin D [25(OH)D3] levels were measured in 102 preschool children, aged 1-4 years with asthma and 102 healthy controls in winter. The patients with asthma were grouped according to serum Vitamin D levels as sufficient, insufficient and deficient. Asthma control was classified according to the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines and the Test for Respiratory and Asthma Control in Kids (TRACK) in 1-4 years-old children. RESULTS: Serum Vitamin D levels were 22.64 (9.96) ng/ml in the asthma group and 32.11 (14.74) ng/ml in the control group (p = 0.001). Total number of exacerbations during the previous year were significantly lower in the Vitamin D sufficient group, compared to the deficient and insufficient groups (p = 0.03). Frequency of patients with controlled asthma was higher in the sufficient group compared to the deficient and insufficient groups (p = 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively). There was a positive correlation between serum Vitamin D levels and asthma control. CONCLUSIONS: The frequency of Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency was higher in children with asthma, compared to the controls. Therefore, we suggest that lower levels of Vitamin D are associated with poor asthma control and increased asthma severity

_carbon_sources/12402125The high-osmolarity glycerol (HOG) response pathway is a multifunctional signal transduction pathway that specifically transmits ambient osmotic signals. Saccharomyces cerevisiae Hog1p has two upstream signaling branches, the sensor histidine kinase Sln1p and the receptor Sho1p. The Sho1p branch includes two
other proteins, the Msb2p mucin and Opy2p. Aspergillus fumigatus is the leading
cause of pulmonary fungal diseases. Here, we investigated the roles played by A. fumigatus SlnASln1p, ShoASho1p, MsbAMsb2p, and OpyAOpy2p putative homologues during the activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) HOG pathway.
The shoA, msbA, and opyA singly and doubly null mutants are important for the cell
wall integrity (CWI) pathway, oxidative stress, and virulence as assessed by a Galleria
mellonella model. Genetic interactions of ShoA, MsbA, and OpyA are also important
for proper activation of the SakAHog1p and MpkASlt2 cascade and the response to osmotic and cell wall stresses. Comparative label-free quantitative proteomics analysis
of the singly null mutants with the wild-type strain upon caspofungin exposure indicates that the absence of ShoA, MsbA, and OpyA affects the osmotic stress response, carbohydrate metabolism, and protein degradation. The putative receptor
mutants showed altered trehalose and glycogen accumulation, suggesting a role for
ShoA, MsbA, and OpyA in sugar storage. Protein kinase A activity was also decreased in these mutants. We also observed genetic interactions between SlnA,
ShoA, MsbA, and OpyA, suggesting that both branches are important for activation
of the HOG/CWI pathways. Our results help in the understanding of the activation
and modulation of the HOG and CWI pathways in this important fungal pathogen.SĂŁo Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientĂfico e TecnolĂłgico (CNPq)Irish Research CouncilScience Foundation Irelan
Optimal Power Allocation for Jammer Nodes in Wireless Localization Systems
In this paper, optimal power allocation strategies are investigated for jammer nodes in a wireless localization system. Building upon the concept of the restricted Bayesian approach, a generalized optimization strategy, called the restricted scheme, is proposed for power allocation of jammer nodes, and its theoretical properties are characterized. In the restricted scheme, the aim is to maximize the average Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of target nodes while keeping their minimum CRLB above a predefined level in the presence of average (total) and peak power constraints. It is proved that the average CRLB achieved by the restricted scheme is a strictly decreasing and concave function of the constraint on the minimum CRLB level. A closed-form solution is obtained for the restricted scheme when the tradeoff parameter and the total power limit are below certain thresholds. In addition, it is shown that the optimal solution of the restricted scheme corresponds to the use of at most NT jammer nodes, where NT is the number of target nodes, and that the optimal solution of the minimum CRLB maximization scheme is determined by at most NJ target nodes, where NJ is the number of jammer nodes. Extensions of the restricted scheme and an alternative scheme that aims to maximize the number of disabled target nodes (whose CRLBs are above a preset level) are considered, and the corresponding optimal strategies for jammer power allocation are identified. Numerical examples are provided to verify the theoretical derivations for various network configurations. © 1991-2012 IEEE
Myeloperoxidase enzyme levels and oxidative stress in bipolar disorders
Oxidative stress and generalized inflammatory state are features of bipolar disorders (BD). The objective of this study was to compare the levels of products of inflammatory reaction and oxidative stress markers in patients with bipolar disorders and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and to determine the relationship between oxidative stress and inflammation in bipolar disorders. ADHD+BD (n = 30) and BD (n = 30) and healthy controls (n = 30) were enrolled. A clinical evaluation andmeasurements of malondialdehyde (MDA), high sensitive C reactive protein (hsCRP) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were performed. Patients with BD+ADHD comorbidity had significantly higher mean MPO levels than BD. Patients with BD had significantly higher mean hsCRP levels than healthy controls. However, there was no significant difference in mean serum hsCRP levels between patients with BD+ADHD and healthy controls. Patients with BD and BD+ADHD had significantly higher mean MDA levels than healthy controls. Our data showed that there is an increased susceptibility to oxidative stress which is strongly related to the serum levels of MDA produced in the serum. hsCRP levels were higher in BD patients than in BD+ADHD and this is suggestive of a higher degree of inflammatory activity in BD patients. ADHD+BD comorbidity seems to augment oxidative stress which is expressed as increased MPO level in the present study. Further large scale studies are needed to extend ourresults
How does a biopsy of endoscopically normal terminal ileum contribute to the diagnosis? Which patients should undergo biopsy?
Background: Terminal ileum endoscopy and biopsy are the diagnostic tools of diseases attacking the ileum. However, abnormal histological findings can be found in endoscopically normal terminal ileum. Objective: This study was performed to evaluate the histopathological results of biopsies from endoscopically normal terminal ileum in order to determine pre-procedure clinical and laboratory factors predicting abnormal histopathological results, if any. Methods: A total of 297 patients who underwent colonoscopy and terminal ileum biopsy and had normal terminal ileum or a few aphthous ulcers in the terminal ileum together with completely normal colon mucosa were included in the study. The patients were grouped into two arms as normal cases and cases with aphthous ulcers. Histopathological and pre-procedural laboratory results of patients were analyzed according to their indications. Results: The terminal ileum was endoscopically normal in 200 patients, and 97 patients had aphthous ulcers. Chronic ileitis rate was present in 5.5% of those with endoscopically normal terminal ileum and in 39.2% of the patients with aphthous ulcers. In both groups, the highest rate of chronic ileitis was detected in the patients with known inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) (15.4 and 50%, respectively), anemia (9.5 and 43.5%, respectively), and in the patients having chronic diarrhea together with abdominal pain (7.7 and 44.8%, respectively). We found that the sensitivity of mean platelet volume for predicting chronic ileitis was 87% and the specificity was 45% at a cut-off value lower than 9.35 fl.Conclusion: In anemia indication or chronic diarrhea together with abdominal pain, the frequency of aphthous ulcers detected by ileoscopy and the frequency of chronic ileitis detected histopathologically despite a normal-appearing ileum were elevated. Keywords: Terminal ileum; ileoscopy; chronic ileitis; inflammatory bowel diseas
Quantum beat spectroscopy: stimulated emission probe of hyperfine quantum beats in the atomic Cs 8p level
Measurements of hyperfine polarization quantum beats are used determine the
magnetic dipole (A) and electric quadrupole (B) coupling constants in the
excited atomic Cs 8p level. The experimental approach is a novel combination of
pulsed optical pumping and time-delayed stimulated emission probing of the
excited level. From the measured evolution of the atomic linear polarization
degree as a function of probe delay time, we determine the hyperfine coupling
constants A = 7.42(6) MHz and B = 0.14(29) MHz
Revisiting Synthesis Model of Sparse Audio Declipper
The state of the art in audio declipping has currently been achieved by SPADE
(SParse Audio DEclipper) algorithm by Kiti\'c et al. Until now, the
synthesis/sparse variant, S-SPADE, has been considered significantly slower
than its analysis/cosparse counterpart, A-SPADE. It turns out that the opposite
is true: by exploiting a recent projection lemma, individual iterations of both
algorithms can be made equally computationally expensive, while S-SPADE tends
to require considerably fewer iterations to converge. In this paper, the two
algorithms are compared across a range of parameters such as the window length,
window overlap and redundancy of the transform. The experiments show that
although S-SPADE typically converges faster, the average performance in terms
of restoration quality is not superior to A-SPADE
The chicken or the egg; or Who ordered the chiral phase transition?
We draw an analogy between the deconfining transition in the 2+1 dimensional
Georgi-Glashow model and the chiral phase transition in 3+1 dimensional QCD.
Based on the detailed analysis of the former (hep-th/0010201) we suggest that
the chiral symmetry restoration in QCD at high temperature is driven by the
thermal ensemble of baryons and anti-baryons. The chiral symmetry is restored
when roughly half of the volume is occupied by the baryons. Surprisingly
enough, even though baryons are rather heavy, a crude estimate for the critical
temperature gives Mev. In this scenario the binding of the instantons
is not the cause but rather a consequence of the chiral symmetry restoration.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, comments about chiral symmetry at finite nuclear
