    One Dimensional Kondo Lattice Model Studied by the Density Matrix Renormalization Group Method

    Recent developments of the theoretical investigations on the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model by using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method are discussed in this review. Short summaries are given for the zero-temperature DMRG, the finite-temperature DMRG, and also its application to dynamic quantities. Away from half-filling, the paramagnetic metallic state is shown to be a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid with the large Fermi surface. For the large Fermi surface its size is determined by the sum of the densities of the conduction electrons and the localized spins. The correlation exponent K_rho of this metallic phase is smaller than 1/2. At half-filling the ground state is insulating. Excitation gaps are different depending on channels, the spin gap, the charge gap and the quasiparticle gap. Temperature dependence of the spin and charge susceptibilities and specific heat are discussed. Particularly interesting is the temperature dependence of various excitation spectra, which show unusual properties of the Kondo insulators.Comment: 18 pages, 23 Postscript figures, REVTe

    Pim-1 kinase inhibits STAT5-dependent transcription via its interactions with SOCS1 and SOCS3

    Signal transducer and activator of transcription 5 (STAT5) plays a critical role in cytokine-induced survival of hematopoietic cells. One of the STAT5 target genes is pim-1, which encodes an oncogenic serine/threonine kinase. Here we demonstrate that Pim-1 inhibits STAT5-dependent transcription in cells responsive to interleukin-3, prolactin, or erythropoietin. Ectopic expression of Pim-1 in cytokine- dependent FDCP1 myeloid cells results in reduced tyrosine phosphorylation and DNA binding of STAT5, indicating that Pim-1 interferes already with the initial steps of STAT5 activation. However, the Pim-1 kinase does not directly phosphorylate or bind to STAT5. By contrast, Pim-1 interacts with suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 (SOCS1) and SOCS3 and potentiates their inhibitory effects on STAT5, most likely via phosphorylation-mediated stabilization of the SOCS proteins. Thus, both Pim and SOCS family proteins may be components of a negative feedback mechanism that allows STAT5 to attenuate its own activity. (C) 2004 by The American Society of Hematology

    A low-complexity beamforming design for multiuser wireless energy transfer

    Wireless energy transfer (WET) is a green enabler of low-power Internet of Things (IoT). Therein, traditional optimization schemes relying on full channel state information (CSI) are often too costly to implement due to excessive energy consumption and high processing complexity. This letter proposes a simple, yet effective, energy beamforming scheme that allows a multi-antenna power beacon (PB) to fairly power a set of IoT devices by only relying on the first-order statistics of the channels. In addition to low complexity, the proposed scheme performs favorably as compared to benchmarking schemes and its performance improves as the number of PB’s antennas increases.     Solution sets for equations over free groups are EDT0L languages

We show that, given an equation over a finitely generated free group, the set of all solutions in reduced words forms an effectively constructible EDT0L language. In particular, the set of all solutions in reduced words is an indexed language in the sense of Aho. The language characterization we give, as well as further questions about the existence or finiteness of solutions, follow from our explicit construction of a finite directed graph which encodes all the solutions. Our result incorporates the recently invented recompression technique of Jez, and a new way to integrate solutions of linear Diophantine equations into the process. As a byproduct of our techniques, we improve the complexity from quadratic nondeterministic space in previous works to NSPACE(n log n) here

    Supershells in Metal Clusters: Self-Consistent Calculations and their Semiclassical Interpretation

    To understand the electronic shell- and supershell-structure in large metal clusters we have performed self-consistent calculations in the homogeneous, spherical jellium model for a variety of different materials. A scaling analysis of the results reveals a surprisingly simple dependence of the supershells on the jellium density.     Program transformations using temporal logic side conditions

    This paper describes an approach to program optimisation based on transformations, where temporal logic is used to specify side conditions, and strategies are created which expand the repertoire of transformations and provide a suitable level of abstraction. We demonstrate the power of this approach by developing a set of optimisations using our transformation language and showing how the transformations can be converted into a form which makes it easier to apply them, while maintaining trust in the resulting optimising steps. The approach is illustrated through a transformational case study where we apply several optimisations to a small program

    Pd₃Sn nanoparticles on TiO₂ and ZnO supports as catalysts for semi-hydrogenation : synthesis and catalytic performance

    The two catalysts Pd₃Sn/TiO₂and Pd3Sn/ZnO were prepared via a one-pot procedure based on the “polyol method” with the addition of a capping agent (polyvinylpyrrolidone) to control the particle size distribution. The same procedure was used to prepare Pd/TiO2 and Pd/ZnO for comparison. All four catalysts showed high activity and selectivity for the selective hydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol (MBY) to 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol (MBE) in the liquid phase under identical conditions. However, Pd₃Sn/TiO₂and Pd₃Sn/ZnO show selectivities to alkene significantly higher than that of the Pd catalysts. Specifically, the selectivity increases from 96.4% to 97.4% on TiO₂support, and 96.2% to 97.6% on ZnO support, at 90% conversion. Transition electron microscopy shows nanoparticles evenly dispersed on the support, with mean particle sizes as low as 4.1 (±0.8) nm when Sn is incorporated into the catalyst. Unsupported Pd3Sn was prepared using the same method and characterised by powder X-Ray diffraction followed by the Rietveld refinement. Pd3Sn was found to be single-phase and isostructural to Pd metal with a face centred cubic unit cell

    Cognition in adults with Williams syndrome — A 20-year follow-up study

    Background: Williams syndrome (WBS) is a genetic multisystem disorder. The main symptom is borderline (intelligence quotient, IQ 70–79) or abnormally low intelligence (IQ Methods: We followed 25 adults (age at baseline 19–68, median 38) with genetically confirmed WBS for about 20 years. The study subjects underwent medical and neuropsychological assessments at the baseline and at the end of follow‐up.Results: The mean VIQ remained quite stable from early adulthood up to 40 years of age after which it declined. The mean PIQ kept on improving from early adulthood until 50 years of age after which it gradually declined. At the end of the study, all study subjects had at least two longstanding health problems out of which hypertension, psychiatric disorder, and scoliosis or kyphosis occurred most frequently. At end of the study, two patients suffered from vascular dementia. Seven patients died during the follow‐up.Conclusions: In adults with WBS, the course of cognition is uneven across the cognitive profile. Their verbal functions both develop and deteriorate earlier than performance/nonverbal functions. Frequent somatic co‐morbidities may increase risk to shortened life span.</p

    Overview of the JET results in support to ITER

    The 2014-2016 JET results are reviewed in the light of their significance for optimising the ITER research plan for the active and non-active operation. More than 60 h of plasma operation with ITER first wall materials successfully took place since its installation in 2011. New multi-machine scaling of the type I-ELM divertor energy flux density to ITER is supported by first principle modelling. ITER relevant disruption experiments and first principle modelling are reported with a set of three disruption mitigation valves mimicking the ITER setup. Insights of the L-H power threshold in Deuterium and Hydrogen are given, stressing the importance of the magnetic configurations and the recent measurements of fine-scale structures in the edge radial electric. Dimensionless scans of the core and pedestal confinement provide new information to elucidate the importance of the first wall material on the fusion performance. H-mode plasmas at ITER triangularity (H = 1 at beta(N) similar to 1.8 and n/n(GW) similar to 0.6) have been sustained at 2 MA during 5 s. The ITER neutronics codes have been validated on high performance experiments. Prospects for the coming D-T campaign and 14 MeV neutron calibration strategy are reviewed.Peer reviewe
