    Understanding Shale Gas: Recent Progress and Remaining Challenges

    Because of a number of technological advancements, unconventional hydrocarbons, and in particular shale gas, have transformed the US economy. Much is being learned, as demonstrated by the reduced cost of extracting shale gas in the US over the past five years. However, a number of challenges still need to be addressed. Many of these challenges represent grand scientific and technological tasks, overcoming which will have a number of positive impacts, ranging from the reduction of the environmental footprint of shale gas production to improvements and leaps forward in diverse sectors, including chemical manufacturing and catalytic transformations. This review addresses recent advancements in computational and experimental approaches, which led to improved understanding of, in particular, structure and transport of fluids, including hydrocarbons, electrolytes, water, and CO2 in heterogeneous subsurface rocks such as those typically found in shale formations. The narrative is concluded with a suggestion of a few research directions that, by synergistically combining computational and experimental advances, could allow us to overcome some of the hurdles that currently hinder the production of hydrocarbons from shale formations

    Surveying the technology landscape: Teachers' use of technology in secondary mathematics classrooms

    For many years, education researchers excited by the potential for digital technologies to transform mathematics teaching and learning have predicted that these technologies would become rapidly integrated into every level of education. However, recent international research shows that technology still plays a marginal role in mathematics classrooms. These trends deserve investigation in the Australian context, where over the past 10 years secondary school mathematics curricula have been revised to allow or require use of digital technologies in learning and assessment tasks. This article reports on a survey of mathematics teachers' use of computers, graphics calculators, and the Internet in Queensland secondary schools, and examines relationships between use and teachers' pedagogical knowledge and beliefs, access to technology, and professional development opportunities. Although access to all forms of technology was a significant factor related to use, teacher beliefs and participation in professional development were also influential. Teachers wanted professional development that modelled planning and pedagogy so they could meaningfully integrate technology into their lessons in ways that help students learn mathematical concepts. The findings have implications not only for resourcing of schools, but also for designing professional development that engages teachers with technology in their local professional contexts.     Preparation and use of maize tassels’ activated carbon for the adsorption of phenolic compounds in environmental waste water samples

    The determination and remediation of three phenolic compounds bisphenol A (BPA), ortho-nitrophenol (o-NTP), parachlorophenol (PCP) in wastewater is reported. The analysis of these molecules in wastewater was done using gas chromatography (GC) × GC time-of-flight mass spectrometry while activated carbon derived from maize tassel was used as an adsorbent. During the experimental procedures, the effect of various parameters such as initial concentration, pH of sample solution, eluent volume, and sample volume on the removal efficiency with respect to the three phenolic compounds was studied. The results showed that maize tassel produced activated carbon (MTAC) cartridge packed solid-phase extraction (SPE) system was able to remove the phenolic compounds effectively (90.84–98.49 %, 80.75–97.11 %, and 78.27–97.08 % for BPA, o-NTP, and PCP, respectively) . The MTAC cartridge packed SPE sorbent performance was compared to commercially produced C18 SPE cartridges and found to be comparable. All the parameters investigated were found to have a notable influence on the adsorption efficiency of the phenolic compounds from wastewaters at different magnitudes
