    Inverse scattering approach to multiwavelength Fabry-PĂ©rot laser design

    A class of multiwavelength Fabry-Pérot lasers is introduced where the spectrum is tailored through a patterning of the cavity effective index. The cavity geometry is obtained using an inverse scattering approach and can be designed such that the spacing of discrete Fabry-Pérot lasing modes is limited only by the bandwidth of the inverted gain medium. A specific two-color semiconductor laser with a mode spacing in the THz region is designed, and measurements are presented demonstrating the simultaneous oscillation of the two wavelengths. The nonperiodic effective index profile of the particular two-color device considered is shown to be related to a Moiré or superstructure grating

    A Framework For Memory Performance Prediction From Brain Volume In Preterm-Born Adolescents

    With advances in medical care, higher numbers of extremely preterm-born babies are now surviving, however the rate of neurodevelopmental and neurological complications has not improved at the same rate and the relative rate of disabilities and health problems is increasing, with associated high costs for health care systems and education. Understanding brain development after early birth is of great importance to be able to make informed decisions. Many studies have associated different areas of the preterm brain with poor cognitive performance, however it is less clear whether these associations persist into adult life. In this study, we investigate how well cortical volumes describe memory performance in 133 19 year-old adolescents, 61% of whom were born extremely preterm. We employ LASSO to identify brain regions that better explain memory performance. The brain regions identified by LASSO explained 27% and 32% of the variance in the visual working memory scores and the visual short term memory respectively. Furthermore, the correlation between the predicted scores and validation scores is statistically significant and it is 58% for the visual working memory task and 56% for the visual short term memory task

    Built-in field control in alloyed c-plane III-N quantum dots and wells

    We investigate the degree to which the built-in electric field can be suppressed by employing polarization-matched barriers in III-N quantum well and dot structures grown along the c axis. Our results show that it is possible to take advantage of the opposite contributions to the built-in potential arising from the different possible combinations of wurtzite GaN, InN, and AlN when alloying the materials. We show that, for a fixed bandgap of the dot/well, optimal alloy compositions can be found that minimize the built-in field across the structure. We discuss and study the impact of different material parameters on the results, including the influence of nonlinear effects in the piezoelectric polarization. Structures grown with unstrained barriers and on GaN epilayers are considered, including discussion of the effects of constraints such as strain limits and alloy miscibility.     On designing observers for time-delay systems with nonlinear disturbances

The system under consideration is subject to delayed state and non-linear disturbances. The time-delay is allowed to be time-varying, and the non-linearities are assumed to satisfy global Lipschitz conditions. The problem addressed is the design of state observers such that, for the admissible time-delay as well as non-linear disturbances, the dynamics of the observation error is globally exponentially stable. An effective algebraic matrix inequality approach is developed to solve the non-linear observer design problem. Specifically, some conditions for the existence of the desired observers are derived, and an explicit expression of desired observers is given in terms of some free parameters. A simulation example is included to illustrate the practical applicability of the proposed theory.The work of Z.     Study-based registers of randomized controlled trials: starting a systematic review with data extraction or meta-analysis

    Introduction: Despite years of use of study-based registers for storing reports of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the methodology used in developing such registers/databases has not been documented. Such registers are integral to the process of scientific reviewing. We document and discuss methodological aspects of the development and use of study-based registers. Although the content is focused on the study-based register of randomized/controlled clinical trials, this work applies to developers of databases of all sorts of studies related to the human, animals, cells, genes, and molecules. Methods: We describe necessity, rationale, and steps for the development, utilization and maintenance of study-based registers as well as the challenges and gains for the organizations supporting systematic reviews of the published and unpublished literature. Conclusion: The ultimate goal of having a study-based register is to facilitate efficient production of systematic reviews providing rapid, yet accurate, evidence for the decision-makers. We argue that moving towards study-based registers is an inevitable welcome direction and that infrastructures are ready for such movement

    Hybrid functional study of nonlinear elasticity and internal strain in zinc-blende III-V materials

    We investigate the elastic properties of selected zinc-blende III-V semiconductors. Using hybrid functional density functional theory, we calculate the second- and third-order elastic constants and first- and second-order internal strain tensor components for Ga, In, and Al containing III-V compounds. For many of these parameters, there are no available experimental measurements, and this work is the first to predict their values. The stricter convergence criteria for the calculation of higher-order elastic constants are demonstrated, and arguments are made based on this for extracting these constants via the calculated stresses, rather than the energies, in the context of plane-wave-based calculations. The calculated elastic properties are used to determine the strain regime at which higher-order elasticity becomes important by comparing the stresses predicted by a lower- and a higher-order elasticity theory. Finally, the results are compared with available experimental literature data and previous theory

    Isolation and in-vitro and in-vivo characterisation of a mutant of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 that exhibited a reduced postantibiotic effect in response to imipenem

    The postantibiotic effect (PAE) is the persistent inhibition of bacterial growth after a brief exposure to an antibiotic. Most ÎČ-lactams do not induce a PAE for Gram-negative bacteria, but PAEs have been reported for carbapenems and penems. This study investigated the effect of sequential doses of imipenem on the PAE for Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli cultures in a chemostat. The PAE for the bacterial population did not change even after six successive exposures to imipenem. Nevertheless, screening of colonies isolated after repeated drug exposure identified a single P. aeruginosa mutant whose imipenem PAE was shortened, although the MIC was unchanged. The PAEs for the parent and mutant were studied in vitro in batch culture by monitoring: (i) viable counts; (ii) electrical impedance of the culture medium; (iii) incorporation of radiolabelled N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and (iv) cell volume changes. PAEs for the parent and mutant were found to be significantly different by all in-vitro methods used. Moreover, the median cell volume in antibiotic-exposed cultures remained much smaller and less heterogeneous than in the control cultures, even though both cultures were growing at the same rate. The mutant was found to have a reduced expression of a 52 kDa outer membrane protein. These observations suggest that factors in addition to suppression of bacterial growth should be considered when studying the PAE. The PAEs of imipenem for the parent and mutant were studied in a thigh infection model in leucopenic mice. Similar PAEs were observed in vivo for both parent and mutant in one experiment and no PAEs for either organism were found in a second experiment. This study showed that although the PAE is a stable in-vitro phenomenon, the lack of correlation between the in-vitro and in-vivo results warrants caution in attributing clinical significance to the PAE of imipene

    Improving the field homogeneity of fixed- and variable-diameter discrete Halbach magnet arrays for MRI via optimization of the angular magnetization distribution

    The aim of this work was to maximize the homogeneity of fixedor variable-diameter Halbach array of discrete magnets by optimizing the angular rotation of individual magnets within each ring of the array. Numerical simulations have been performed for magnet arrays with various length:radius ratios (L/R) using a dipole-approximation model. These simulations used an uninformed random-search algorithm, with the initial state corresponding to the classical Halbach dipole configuration. Two different classes of systems were studied, one with magnet rings of constant radius, and the other in which the radius of the rings was allowed to vary to increase the homogeneity. Simulation results showed that for a fixed-diameter array optimization of the angular orientation of individual magnets increased the homogeneity by-17% for very short magnets, with the improvement dropping to-5% for L/R values greater than-3:1, where the homogeneity was measured over a region-of-interest equal to one-half the diameter of the magnet array. An empirical formula was derived which allows easy estimation of the required magnetization angles for any L/R. For a 23-ring variable diameter magnet with L/R of-4:1 the optimization procedure produces an increase in homogeneity of-18%.(c) 2021 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Inc.     An immunotherapy survivor population: health-related quality of life and toxicity in patients with metastatic melanoma treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors

Metastatic melanoma survivors are a new population in the era of cancer survivorship. The aimofthis study was to evaluate metastatic melanoma survivors in terms of health-related quality of life (HRQoL), immune-relatedadverse events (irAEs) and exposure to immunosuppressive agents in a large single centre in the UK.Methods We defined the survivor population as patients with a diagnosis of metastatic melanoma who achieved a durableresponse to an ICI and had been followed-up for a minimum of 12 months from initiation of ICI without disease progression.HRQoL was assessed using SF-36. Electronic health records were accessed to collect data on demographics, treatments, irAEsand survival. HRQoL data was compared with two norm-based datasets.Results Eighty-four metastatic melanoma survivors were eligible and 87% (N = 73) completed the SF-36. ICI-related toxicity ofany grade occurred in 92%of patients and 43%had experienced a grade 3 or 4 toxicity. Almost half (49%) of the patients requiredsteroids for the treatment of ICI-related toxicity, whilst 14% required treatment with an immunosuppressive agent beyondsteroids.Melanoma survivors had statistically significant lower HRQoL scores with regard to physical, social and physical rolefunctioning and general health compared with the normative population. There was a trend towards inferior scores in patientswith previous exposure to ipilimumab compared with those never exposed to ipilimumab.Conclusions Our results show that metastatic melanoma survivors have potentially experienced significant ICI-related toxicityand experience significant impairments in specific HRQoL domains. Future service planning is required to meet this population’sunique survivorship needs.Peer reviewe
