    Learning 21st century science in context with mobile technologies

    The paper describes a project to support personal inquiry learning with handheld and desktop technology between formal and informal settings. It presents a trial of the technology and learning across a school classroom, sports hall, and library. The main aim of the study was to incorporate inquiry learning activities within an extended school science environment in order to investigate opportunities for technological mediations and to extract initial recommendations for the design of mobile technology to link inquiry learning across different contexts. A critical incident analysis was carried out to identify learning breakdowns and breakthroughs that led to design implications. The main findings are the opportunities that a combination of mobile and fixed technology bring to: manage the formation of groups, display live visualisations of student and teacher data on a shared screen to facilitate motivation and personal relevance, incorporate broader technical support, provide context-specific guidance on the sequence, reasons and aims of learning activities, offer opportunities to micro-sites for reflection and learning in the field, to explicitly support appropriation of data within inquiry and show the relation between specific activities and the general inquiry process

    Integration of LiDAR and stereoscopic imagery for route corridor surveying

    Transportation networks are, typically, one of the most economic valuable resources for any nation requiring a large percentage of GDP to build and maintain. These route corridors attract their own unique set of spatial information requirements in terms of overall management including planning, engineering and operation. Various disciplines within a road management agency require high quality, spatial data of objects and features occurring along these networks from road infrastructure, sub-surface pavement condition through to modelling noise. This paper examines the integration of relatively novel sensor data against some pressing spatial information requirements for a small European road management agency. LiDAR systems are widely available and now used to record data from both aerial and terrestrial survey platforms. One of the chief LiDAR outputs are X,Y,Z points enabling a reliable 2.5-D geometric surface to be produced. Stereoscopic imagery is also collected from similar airborne and terrestrial mobile platforms. Both provide different datasets in terms of their respective optical and geometric properties. For example, stereoscopic cameras mounted on a survey vehicle record different data compared to LiDAR mounted near vertically on an airborne platform. Airborne LiDAR provides a more comprehensive geometric record whereas stereoscopic imagery can be used to provide a more comprehensive visual descriptor of the immediate route corridor. Acquisition systems for both sensors are relatively well understood and developed. Both systems collect large volumes of data that require a significant amount of data processing in order to produce useful information. A more efficient result can be achieved by integrating these two datasets within a GIS. The preliminary results of integration of airborne LiDAR with ground based stereo imaging systems are presented. How well this integration satisfies the growing spatial information requirements of the road agency are also examined

    Using an omnidirectional video logger to observe the underwater life of marine animals : humpback whale resting behaviour

Environment Fund, and The Research Grant against Global Warming of the Ichimura Foundation for New Technology.Animal-borne video loggers are powerful tools for investigating animal behaviour because they directly record immediate and extended peripheral animal activities; however, typical video loggers capture only a limited area on one side of an animal being monitored owing to their narrow field of view. Here, we investigated the resting behaviour of humpback whales using an animal-borne omnidirectional video camera combined with a behavioural data logger. In the video logger footage, two non-tagged resting individuals, which did not spread their flippers or move their flukes, were observed above a tagged animal, representing an apparent bout of group resting. During the video logger recording, the swim speed was relatively slow (0.75 m s ), and the tagged animal made only a few strokes of very low amplitude during drift diving. We report the drift dives as resting behaviour specific to baleen whales as same as seals, sperm whales and loggerhead turtles. Overall, our study shows that an omnidirectional video logger is a valuable tool for interpreting animal ecology with improved accuracy owing to its ability to record a wide field of view.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Determining the optimal model for role substitution in NHS dental services in the UK: a mixed-methods study.

    Background: Maximising health gain for a given level and mix of resources is an ethical imperative for health-service planners. Approximately half of all patients who attend a regular NHS dental check-up do not require any further treatment, whereas many in the population do not regularly attend. Thus, the most expensive resource (the dentist) is seeing healthy patients at a time when many of those with disease do not access care. Role substitution in NHS dentistry, where other members of the dental team undertake the clinical tasks previously provided by dentists, has the potential to increase efficiency and the capacity to care and lower costs. However, no studies have empirically investigated the efficiency of NHS dental provision that makes use of role substitution. Research questions: This programme of research sought to address three research questions: (1) what is the efficiency of NHS dental teams that make use of role substitution?; (2) what are the barriers to, and facilitators of, role substitution in NHS dental practices?; and (3) how do incentives in the remuneration systems influence the organisation of these inputs and production of outputs in the NHS? Design: Data envelopment analysis was used to develop a productive efficiency frontier for participating NHS practices, which were then compared on a relative basis, after controlling for patient and practice characteristics. External validity was tested using stochastic frontier modelling, while semistructured interviews explored the views of participating dental teams and their patients to role substitution. Setting: NHS ‘high-street’ general dental practices. Participants: 121 practices across the north of England. Interventions: No active interventions were undertaken. Main outcome measures: Relative efficiency of participating NHS practices, alongside a detailed narrative of their views about role substitution dentistry. Social acceptability for patients. Results: The utilisation of non-dentist roles in NHS practices was relatively low, the most common role type being the dental hygienist. Increasing the number of non-dentist team members reduced efficiency. However, it was not possible to determine the relative efficiency of individual team members, as the NHS contracts only with dentists. Financial incentives in the NHS dental contract and the views of practice principals (i.e. senior staff members) were equally important. Bespoke payment and referral systems were required to make role substitution economically viable. Many non-dentist team members were not being used to their full scope of practice and constraints on their ability to prescribe reduced efficiency further. Many non-dentist team members experienced a precarious existence, commonly being employed at multiple practices. Patients had a low level of awareness of the different non-dentist roles in a dental team. Many exhibited an inherent trust in the professional ‘system’, but prior experience of role substitution was important for social acceptability. Conclusions: Better alignment between the financial incentives within the NHS dental contract and the use of role substitution is required, although professional acceptability remains critical. Study limitations: Output data collected did not reflect the quality of care provided by the dental team and the input data were self-reported. Future work: Further work is required to improve the evidence base for the use of role substitution in NHS dentistry, exploring the effects and costs of provision.     Voriconazole is safe and effective as prophylaxis for early and late fungal infections following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

    Seventy-two patients undergoing allogeneic transplantation were treated with voriconazole (VOR) as antifungal prophylaxis starting from day −2 of transplantation and continuing until withdrawal of immunosuppression. Patients were assessed for safety and the incidence of definite, probable, or possible fungal infection throughout transplantation was evaluated. VOR was well tolerated. Only 14% of patients required interruption of VOR therapy because of toxicity: liver toxicity (8%), cardiac Q –T interval prolongation (1%), or other side effects (5%). In the early post-transplant period (120 days), no patients developed probable or definite fungal infection while receiving VOR. No Candida infections were seen in either period.     Political Dynasties and the Selection of Cabinet Ministers

    We investigate whether politicians whose family relatives previously served in parliament and cabinet enjoy a competitive "legacy advantage" in progressing from the backbenches to ministerial office. This advantage may stem from two potential mechanisms: a direct effect attributable to the informational advantages of legacies, or an indirect effect that operates through greater electoral strength. We evaluate the relative contribution of each mechanism using candidate-level data from Irish parliamentary elections and cabinets from 1944-2016. Our results reveal that politicians with a family history in cabinet do enjoy an advantage in cabinet selection, and that this advantage cannot be attributed simply to greater electoral popularity

    Workforce planning models for oral healthcare: A scoping review

    BACKGROUND: For health care services to address the health care needs of populations and respond to changes in needs over time, workforces must be planned. This requires quantitative models to estimate future workforce requirements that take account of population size, oral health needs, evidence-based approaches to addressing needs, and methods of service provision that maximize productivity. The aim of this scoping review was to assess whether and how these 4 elements contribute to existing models of oral health workforce planning. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted. MEDLINE, Embase, HMIC, and EconLit were searched, all via OVID. Additionally, gray literature databases were searched and key bodies and policy makers contacted. Workforce planning models were included if they projected workforce numbers and were specific to oral health. No limits were placed on country. A single reviewer completed initial screening of abstracts; 2 independent reviewers completed secondary screening and data extraction. A narrative synthesis was conducted. RESULTS: A total of 4,009 records were screened, resulting in 42 included articles detailing 47 models. The workforce planning models varied significantly in their use of data on oral health needs, evidence-based services, and provider productivity, with most models relying on observed levels of service utilization and demand. CONCLUSIONS: This review has identified quantitative workforce planning models that aim to estimate future workforce requirements. Approaches to planning the oral health workforce are not always based on deriving workforce requirements from population oral health needs. In many cases, requirements are not linked to population needs, while in models where needs are included, they are constrained by the existence and availability of the required data. It is critical that information systems be developed to effectively capture data necessary to plan future oral health care workforces in ways that relate directly to the needs of the populations being served. KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER STATEMENT: Policy makers can use the results of this study when making decisions about the planning of oral health care workforces and about the data to routinely collect within health services. Collection of suitable data will allow for the continual improvement of workforce planning, leading to a responsive health service and likely future cost savings

    House price Keynesianism and the contradictions of the modern investor subject

    This article conceptualises the marked downturn in UK house prices in the 2007-2009 period in relation to longer-term processes of national economic restructuring centred on a new model of homeownership. The structure of UK house prices has been impacted markedly by the Labour Government‟s efforts to ingrain a particular notion of financial literacy amid the move towards an increasingly asset-based system of welfare. New model welfare recipients and new model homeowners have thereby been co-constituted in a manner consistent with a new UK growth regime of „house price Keynesianism‟. However, the investor subjects who drive such growth are necessarily rendered uncertain as compared with the idealised image of Government policy because of their reliance on the credit-creating decisions of private financial institutions. The recent steep decline in UK house prices is explained here as an epiphenomenon of the disruptive effect on the idealised image caused by the dependence of investor subjects on pricing dynamics not of their making
