    Time-integrated directional detection of dark matter

    The analysis of signals in directional dark matter (DM) detectors typically assumes that the directions of nuclear recoils can be measured in the Galactic rest frame. However, this is not possible with all directional detection technologies. In nuclear emulsions, for example, the recoil events must be detected and measured after the exposure time of the experiment. Unless the entire detector is mounted and rotated with the sidereal day, the recoils cannot be reoriented in the Galactic rest frame. We examine the effect of this `time integration' on the primary goals of directional detection, namely: (1) confirming that the recoils are anisotropic; (2) measuring the median recoil direction to confirm their Galactic origin; and (3) probing below the neutrino floor. We show that after time integration the DM recoil distribution retains a preferred direction and is distinct from that of Solar neutrino-induced recoils. Many of the advantages of directional detection are therefore preserved and it is not crucial to mount and rotate the detector. Rejecting isotropic backgrounds requires a factor of 2 more signal events compared with an experiment with event time information, whereas a factor of 1.5-3 more events are needed to measure a median direction in agreement with the expectation for DM. We also find that there is still effectively no neutrino floor in a time-integrated directional experiment. However to reach a cross section an order of magnitude below the floor, a factor of 8 larger exposure is required than with a conventional directional experiment. We also examine how the sensitivity is affected for detectors with only 2D recoil track readout, and/or no head-tail measurement.     This study explores the theory and practice of Māori enterprise collaboration. There exists a strong rationale for Māori enterprise collaboration as it builds on the relationality of a Māori world view, shared values and existing whakapapa (genealogical) relationships. Collaboration is considered integral to Māori development because it is set against a background of self-determination and self-governance. Waiƫ Dairy and MiHI (Movers in Hemp Innovation) are two Māori enterprise collaborations that have been facilitated by Poutama Trust and are at distinctly different stages of maturity.     Simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry – synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction : a powerful technique for physical form characterisation in pharmaceutical materials

    © 2016 American Chemical Society. We report a powerful new technique: hyphenating synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). This is achieved with a simple modification to a standard laboratory DSC instrument, in contrast to previous reports which have involved extensive and complex modifications to a DSC to mount it in the synchrotron beam. The high-energy X-rays of the synchrotron permit the recording of powder diffraction patterns in as little as 2 s, meaning that thermally induced phase changes can be accurately quantified and additional insight on the nature of phase transitions obtained. Such detailed knowledge cannot be gained from existing laboratory XRD instruments, since much longer collection times are required. We demonstrate the power of our approach with two model systems, glutaric acid and sulfathiazole, both of which show enantiotropic polymorphism. The phase transformations between the low and high temperature polymorphs are revealed to be direct solid-solid processes, and sequential refinement against the diffraction patterns obtained permits phase fractions at each temperature to be calculated and unit cell parameters to be accurately quantified as a function of temperature. The combination of XRD and DSC has further allowed us to identify mixtures of phases which appeared phase-pure by DSC

    Association of subclinical psychosis with suicidal ideation : A twin study

    Subclinical psychosis, including schizotypal indicators and psychotic experiences, predicts future suicidal ideation. This relationship may reflect unmeasured confounding from environmental factors, genetic factors, or both. We used a genetically-informative twin design to understand if the association between subclinical psychosis and suicidal ideation is independent of shared genetic and environmental factors. We analysed cross-sectional associations of age-22 self-reported subclinical psychosis (positive, negative, and disorganised features) with suicidal ideation in twins participating in the FinnTwin12 study (maximum n = 1213). Then, we analysed the reverse association of age-14 suicidal ideation with age-22 subclinical psychosis. Associations were studied first among individuals and then within monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) pairs. Individual-level analyses showed that all subclinical psychosis factors were associated with suicidal ideation. In within-pair analyses, estimates of associations were lower for MZ pairs than DZ pairs, except for the negative schizotypy-suicidal ideation association where estimates were consistent across individual-level and within-pair analyses. Findings provide evidence that the association between negative features and suicide ideation is not explained by familial factors and may be causal, though the possibility of confounding by individual-specific environmental factors and reverse causation cannot be ruled out. The relationships of positive and disorganised subclinical psychosis features with suicidal ideation cannot be explained by confounding due to environmental factors shared between siblings, but their associations may be due to shared genetic factors.     Antibiotic pharmacoeconomics: an attempt to find the real cost of hospital antibiotic prescribing.

    Antibiotics account for a large part of all hospital pharmacy budgets, but the actual cost of their prescription is unknown. These costs include intravenous administration, labour, serum antibiotic assay, monitoring of haematological and biochemical indices, disposal of sharps and adverse effects. An in-house method of costing antibiotic therapy is presented, to quantify these hidden expenses. Since not only an awareness, but an accurate quantification, of hidden costs is required, a study of various hospital procedures relating directly to antibiotic therapy was undertaken in an acute medical ward; this involved the identification of particular staff members performing various procedures, consumables used and time taken. The cost of five-day courses of gentamicin, penicillin G, ampicillin, flucloxacillin, cefuroxime, ceftotaxime and erythromycin has been calculated; drug and hidden costs for each are presented graphically for comparison. The breakdown cost for gentamicin is presented to illustrate the method. The costing of adverse effects has not been attempted. We suggest that costings of this sort are used in cost-benefit analysis of antibiotic use. These calculations have been incorporated into a computer spreadsheet and this costing service will be offered to clinical areas of our hospital

    A geometrically-exact Finite Element Method for micropolar continua with finite deformations

    Micropolar theory is a weakly non-local higher-order continuum theory based on the inclusion of independent (micro-)rotational degrees of freedom. Subsequent introduction of couple-stresses and an internal length scale mean the micropolar continuum is therefore capable of modelling size effects. This paper proposes a non-linear Finite Element Method based on the spatial micropolar equilibrium equations, but using the classical linear micropolar constitutive laws defined in the reference configuration. The method is verified rigorously with the Method of Manufactured Solutions, and quadratic Newton-Raphson convergence of the minimised residuals is demonstrated
