    Calculation of NH3 Emissions, Evaluation of Backward Lagrangian Stochastic Dispersion Model and Aerodynamic Gradient Method

    Two campaigns measuring ammonia (NH3) emissions with different measurement techniques were performed on a large grass field (26 ha) after the application of liquid animal manure. The aim was to compare emissions from a confined area estimated from either (i) concentration measurements, both point and line-integrated measurements, combined with backward Lagrangian stochastic (bLS) dispersion modeling or by (ii) estimation of the vertical flux by the aerodynamic gradient method (AGM) with and without footprint correction approximated by the bLS model estimates of the flux footprint. The objective of the comparison is to establish the best practice to derive NH3 emissions from a large field. NH3 emissions derived from bLS agreed well when comparing point and line-integrated measurements. Simple point measurements combined with bLS yield good emission estimations for the confined area. Without footprint correction, the AGM underestimates the emissions by up to 9% compared to the footprint-corrected AGM results. The sensitivity of the measurement methods makes it possible to quantify NH3 emissions with diurnal patterns even five days after a field application of liquid animal manure under wet conditions. The bLS model proves to be a strong tool to determine the NH3 emissions from point concentration measurements inside a large field after a slurry application

    The Aerodynamic Gradient Method: Implications of Non-Simultaneous Measurements at Alternating Heights

    Flux measurements with the aerodynamic gradient method (AGM) performed with a single analyzer measuring non-simultaneously at two heights have routinely been conducted. This study investigates the effect of this practice with calculations of single analyzer derived fluxes compared to fluxes derived from simultaneous concentration measurements at two heights for NH3. The results show a mean relative difference of less than 7% for the half-hour averaging intervals, whereas the relative difference in the cumulative loss of total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN) is less than 4%. Scatter plots and linear regression show linear behavior with slope and intercept close to one and zero, respectively. The regression coefficients were between 0.913 and 0.966 for the simulations, but with large deviations for the single half-hour measurement interval. Changes in the starting height and averaging duration at each height for the single analyzer calculations yield small differences, but the effect is minimal compared to the general uncertainty of flux determination with AGM

    The ALFAM2 database on ammonia emission from field-applied manure: Description and illustrative analysis

    peer-reviewedAmmonia (NH3) emission from animal manure contributes to air pollution and ecosystem degradation, and the loss of reactive nitrogen (N) from agricultural systems. Estimates of NH3 emission are necessary for national inventories and nutrient management, and NH3 emission from field-applied manure has been measured in many studies over the past few decades. In this work, we facilitate the use of these data by collecting and organizing them in the ALFAM2 database. In this paper we describe the development of the database and summarise its contents, quantify effects of application methods and other variables on emission using a data subset, and discuss challenges for data analysis and model development. The database contains measurements of emission, manure and soil properties, weather, application technique, and other variables for 1895 plots from 22 research institutes in 12 countries. Data on five manure types (cattle, pig, mink, poultry, mixed, as well as sludge and “other”) applied to three types of crops (grass, small grains, maize, as well as stubble and bare soil) are included. Application methods represented in the database include broadcast, trailing hose, trailing shoe (narrow band application), and open slot injection. Cattle manure application to grassland was the most common combination, and analysis of this subset (with dry matter (DM) limited to <15%) was carried out using mixed- and fixed-effects models in order to quantify effects of management and environment on ammonia emission, and to highlight challenges for use of the database. Measured emission in this subset ranged from <1% to 130% of applied ammonia after 48 h. Results showed clear, albeit variable, reductions in NH3 emission due to trailing hose, trailing shoe, and open slot injection of slurry compared to broadcast application. There was evidence of positive effects of air temperature and wind speed on NH3 emission, and limited evidence of effects of slurry DM. However, random-effects coefficients for differences among research institutes were among the largest model coefficients, and showed a deviation from the mean response by more than 100% in some cases. The source of these institute differences could not be determined with certainty, but there is some evidence that they are related to differences in soils, or differences in application or measurement methods. The ALFAM2 database should be useful for development and evaluation of both emission factors and emission models, but users need to recognize the limitations caused by confounding variables, imbalance in the dataset, and dependence among observations from the same institute. Variation among measurements and in reported variables highlights the importance of international agreement on how NH3 emission should be measured, along with necessary types of supporting data and standard protocols for their measurement. Both are needed in order to produce more accurate and useful ammonia emission measurements.     Greenhouse Gas and Ammonia Emissions from Different Stages of Liquid Manure Management Chains: Abatement Options and Emission Interactions

    Farm livestock manure is an important source of ammonia and greenhouse gases. Concerns over the environmental impact of emissions from manure management have resulted in research efforts focusing on emission abatement. However, questions regarding the successful abatement of manure-related emissions remain. This study uses a meta-analytical approach comprising 89 peer-reviewed studies to quantify emission reduction potentials of abatement options for liquid manure management chains from cattle and pigs. Analyses of emission reductions highlight the importance of accounting for interactions between emissions. Only three out of the eight abatement options considered (frequent removal of manure, anaerobic digesters, and manure acidification) reduced ammonia (3-60%), nitrous oxide (21-55%), and methane (29-74%) emissions simultaneously, whereas in all other cases, tradeoffs were identified. The results demonstrate that a shift from single-stage emission abatement options towards a wholechain perspective is vital in reducing overall emissions along the manure management chain. The study also identifies some key elements like proper clustering, reporting of influencing factors, and explicitly describing assumptions associated with abatement options that can reduce variability in emission reduction estimates. Prioritization of abatement options according to their functioning can help to determine low-risk emission reduction options, specifically options that alter manure characteristics (e.g., reduced protein diets, anaerobic digestion, or slurry acidification). These insights supported by comprehensive emission measurement studies can help improve the effectiveness of emission abatement and harmonize strategies aimed at reducing air pollution and climate change simultaneously

    On interpreting ancient Egyptian funerary texts

    Tradicionalmente se ha interpretado que los textos funerarios del antiguo Egipto proporcionaban descripciones literales y detalladas sobre las creencias en el más allá, aunque las investigaciones recientes han sometido a crítica diversos aspectos de este punto de vista. Este artículo pretende presentar estas investigaciones y contrastarlas con la interpretación clásica de los textos funerarios establecida por Kurt Sethe (1931), con el argumento de que en algunos aspectos es posible ir más allá de sus afirmaciones. Se puede así concluir que la misma noción de “textos funerarios” entendida como género textual sui generis es cuestionable, así como su supuesta característica fundamental, a saber que tales textos contienen descripciones literales de una vida trascendente y personal en el más allá. Por el contrario, el autor sostiene con el apoyo de ideas tomadas de la Egiptología y de la investigación interdisciplinar que los textos funerarios comparten estructura y función con otros textos rituales egipcios antiguos. Por ello, al cuestionar la lectura intuitiva de los textos como descripciones de la vida de ultratumba quedan abiertas nuevas posibilidades de interpretación relevantes tanto para la Egiptología como para los estudios comparativos interculturales.Fil.
