    Reaction Textures and Metamorphic Evolution of Sapphirine-bearing Granulites from the Gruf Complex, Italian Central Alps

    Mineral chemistries and textures are described from a suite of sapphirine-bearing granulites from the Gruf Complex of the Italian Central Alps. The granulites contain combinations of garnet, orthopyroxene, sapphirine, sillimanite, cordierite, biotite, quartz, spinel, corundum, staurolite, plagioclase, K-feldspar, ilmenite and rutile, in assemblages with low (usually negative) variance. They are outstanding in that they preserve a textural and chemical record of a protracted metamorphic evolution. Reaction textures are common and include: (i) pseudomorphs (e.g. of sillimanite after kyanite); (ii) relatively coarse-grained monomineralic reaction rims (e.g. of cordierite between sapphirine and quartz); (iii) fine-grained symplectitic coronas (e.g. of orthopyroxene + sapphirine round garnet); (iv) inclusions, in garnet cores, of minerals (e.g. staurolite) not found elsewhere in the rocks. Detailed microprobe study has revealed large chemical variations within each phase. Different textural types of each phase have different compositions, and strong zoning is preserved in garnet (Mg/(Mg + Fe) from 0.30 to 0.61) and coarse sapphirine. Inclusion populations in garnet correlate with host composition. The textural and chemical features are interpreted in terms of successive equilibrium assemblages and reactions. Metamorphic conditions operative at each stage in the evolution are calculated using published geothermometers and geobarometers as well as thermodynamically calibrated MAS and FASH equilibria. The results are used to construct a P—T-time path for the sapphirine-granulites, which can be summarized as follows: (i) Increasing T at high P (>7 kb). Partial melting. (ii) A maximum T of ∼830 °C attained at ∼10 kb. (iii) Almost isothermal decompression, reaching 750 °C at ∼5 kb, under conditions of low μH2O. (iv) Further cooling, and decompression. Localized hydration. Rocks exposed. The P—T-time path is interpreted as the product of a single metamorphic cycle (the tertiary ‘Lepontine' event) and is extrapolated to the Gruf Complex as a whole. When combined with published geochronological data, the results indicate an average uplift rate in excess of 2 mm/yr for the Gruf Complex between 38 and 30 Ma ago. An in situ partial melting origin for the sapphirine-granulites is favoured. Extraction of an iron-rich granitic liquid from a normal pelitic palaeosome could generate a refractory residue with the required Mg, Al-rich composition. The change in bulk solid composition during partial melting is thought to account for the extraordinarity strong zoning in the garnet

    Construction and demolition waste management : assessment of demand and supply of recycled materials in the Western Cape

    Includes bibliographical references (leaves 96-100).Concern for environmental degradation has been a motivating factor in the efforts to reuse or recycle construction and demolition waste. The intention is not only to reduce environmental desecration, but also to recycle the construction and demolition waste into potential building materials to be reused elsewhere. This study investigated the supply and demand of recycled construction materials in the Western Cape, and aimed to determine the perception held by important stakeholders about these materials. A qualitative analysis of the case study results revealed that poor waste management plans implemented on construction and demolition sites have affected the quality, supply and price of recycled materials. In addition to this it was also revealed that the negative perceptions regarding recycled materials were the major barriers to creating an established secondary market. Inadequate knowledge and experience were major contributors to resistance to change of perceptions. A case study was conducted on Malans Quarries Recyclers in order to determine the supply of raw materials (construction and demolition waste) reaching the recycling plant; the supply of recycled materials to the end user (consumer); and the recycling process that takes place. A sample of fifteen respondents from a variety of large, medium and small construction contractors, as well as consultants and civil engineering companies, completed a questionnaire to determine the demand for and perceptions about these materials. The qualitative analysis of the results of the questionnaires showed that the majority of respondents still preferred to use primary materials over recycled materials. However, it appears that the gap between respondents who prefer to use primary materials, and those who utilize recycled materials, has narrowed in comparison to results obtained in previous studies. It seems that there may be more usage of recycled materials in the future. The results also revealed that tax cuts, could be a good economic incentive to encourage the use of recycled material. The questionnaire results also revealed that the majority of the respondents believed that landfill taxes where not effective in discouraging the illegal dumping of waste, and that the lack advertisements, and difficulties in obtaining recycled materials played a crucial role in the under-use of recycled materials

    Mitochondrial dysfunction generates a growth-restraining signal linked to pyruvate in Drosophila larvae

    ABSTRACTThe Drosophila bang-sensitive mutant tko25t, manifesting a global deficiency in oxidative phosphorylation due to a mitochondrial protein synthesis defect, exhibits a pronounced delay in larval development. We previously identified a number of metabolic abnormalities in tko25t larvae, including elevated pyruvate and lactate, and found the larval gut to be a crucial tissue for the regulation of larval growth in the mutant. Here we established that expression of wild-type tko in any of several other tissues of tko25t also partially alleviates developmental delay. The effects appeared to be additive, whilst knockdown of tko in a variety of specific tissues phenocopied tko25t, producing developmental delay and bang-sensitivity. These findings imply the existence of a systemic signal regulating growth in response to mitochondrial dysfunction. Drugs and RNAi-targeted on pyruvate metabolism interacted with tko25t in ways that implicated pyruvate or one of its metabolic derivatives in playing a central role in generating such a signal. RNA-seq revealed that dietary pyruvate-induced changes in transcript representation were mostly non-coherent with those produced by tko25t or high-sugar, consistent with the idea that growth regulation operates primarily at the translational and/or metabolic level.Peer reviewe

    Automation aspects for the georeferencing of photogrammetric aerial image archives in forested scenes

    Photogrammetric aerial film image archives are scanned into digital form in many countries. These data sets offer an interesting source of information for scientists from different disciplines. The objective of this investigation was to contribute to the automation of a generation of 3D environmental model time series when using small-scale airborne image archives, especially in forested scenes. Furthermore, we investigated the usability of dense digital surface models (DSMs) generated using these data sets as well as the uncertainty propagation of the DSMs. A key element in the automation is georeferencing. It is obvious that for images captured years apart, it is essential to find ground reference locations that have changed as little as possible. We studied a 68-year-long aerial image time series in a Finnish Karelian forestland. The quality of candidate ground locations was evaluated by comparing digital DSMs created from the images to an airborne laser scanning (ALS)-originated reference DSM. The quality statistics of DSMs were consistent with the expectations; the estimated median root mean squared error for height varied between 0.3 and 2 m, indicating a photogrammetric modelling error of 0.1 parts per thousand with respect to flying height for data sets collected since the 1980s, and 0.2 parts per thousand for older data sets. The results show that of the studied land cover classes, "peatland without trees" changed the least over time and is one of the most promising candidates to serve as a location for automatic ground control measurement. Our results also highlight some potential challenges in the process as well as possible solutions. Our results indicate that using modern photogrammetric techniques, it is possible to reconstruct 3D environmental model time series using photogrammetric image archives in a highly automated way.Peer reviewe

    Information Integration, Coordination Failures, and Quality of Prescribing

    Poor information flows hamper coordination, potentially leading to suboptimal decisions in health care. We examine the effects of a nationwide policy of information integration on the quality of prescribing. We use the rollout of an electronic prescribing system in Finland and prescription-level administrative data. We find no effect on the probability of co-prescribing harmful drug combinations in urban regions. In rural regions, this probability reduces substantially, by 35 percent. The effect is driven by prescriptions from unspecialized physicians and from multiple physicians. Improving the local information environment thus enhances coordination and narrows differences in the quality of prescribing.</p
