We study the dynamics of entropy in a time dependent potential and explore how disorder influences this entropy flow. We show that disorder can trap entropy at the edge of the atomic cloud enabling a novel cooling method. We demonstrate the feasibility of our cooling technique by analyzing the evolution of entropy in a one-dimensional Fermi lattice gas with a time dependent superlattice potential.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

Corruption: Democracy, Autocracy, and Political Stability

The recent empirical literature on corruption has identified a long list of variables that correlate significantly with corruption but only five were distinguished by Leamer’s Extreme Bounds Analysis as robust to various samples, measures of corruption, and regression specifications. Among these five factors that were found to reduce corruption are decades-long tradition of democracy and political stability. In today’s world, however, there are many countries that combine one of these two robust determinants of corruption with the opposite of the other: politically stable autocracies or newly formed and unstable democracies. The central question raised in this paper is: Is it worth, in terms of corruption, for a country to trade stability with autocratic rule for political freedoms but with transitional instability? We find that the answer to this question is in the affirmative - the level of corruption is indeed lower in unstable democracies than in stable dictatorships. Our results are robust to various measures of corruption, alternative regressor indices, and regression specifications.corruption, democracy, autocracy, dictatorship, political stability

Abstract Literacy is traditionally understood as a set of cognitive ability to read or to write. New Literacy Studies opposes this traditional belief and see literacy as a set of social practice which involves in the activity of reading and writing. The theme of literacy in the literary works is often overlooked by any other themes as it is seen traditionally. Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief has the theme of the power of words and literacy. This study encounters how literacy in Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief is represented through the activity of reading and writing and how this novel reveal the notions of power among the characters using New Literacy Studies and the study about literacy and power as the underlying theories. Therefore, the method used in this study is the textual analysis using library research. The results show that the literacy events in The Book Thief are represented as power in many aspects of the characters’ lives. Each event manifests the notions of power in several features. First, in the Books Burning event, it is revealed that the Nazi who have dominant power can take control and have authority over the access to books and literatures. The second, the books thieveries by Liesel Meminger exposes the power a person gets from the culmination of fury generated from humiliation and betrayal by people of the ruling class. Third, a powerful book of propaganda, Mein Kampf is considered as a very influential one in the society. This novel depicts that such power carried by Mein Kampf not only invites the approval from one character to spread the propaganda but also invites the signs of resistance from another character. Keywords: literacy, New Literacy Studies, power.

Birth planning for a couple from the first and subsequent births can be arranged so that the welfare of the community increases and other undesirable things can be anticipated from afar. The methods include using contraception or prevention of pregnancy and family planning. Sterilization is to spay a man or woman by operating (in general) so as not to produce offspring. Sterilization for men (vasectomy) and women (tubectomy). Procedurally, vasectomy in men is relatively simpler than tubectomy while the procedure for tubectomy is a bit complicated and complex

Electrochemical strategy for grown ZnO nanoparticles deposited onto HY zeolite with enhanced photodecolorization of methylene blue: Effect of the formation of Si O Zn bonds

Get PDF
Nanoparticles of electrogenerated zinc-supported HY zeolite (EGZnO/HY) catalyst were prepared by a simple electrochemical method. The interaction between zinc species and HY support during the electrolysis was found to affect the EGZnO/HY structure. In addition to the formation of EGZnO nanoparticles (<30 nm in size) that distributed on the surface of HY support, an isomorphous substitution of Al with Zn also occurred in the aluminosilicate framework to result in a Si O Zn bonds. The photoactivity of EGZnO/HY was tested on the decolorization of methylene blue (MB). An amount of 0.375 g L−1 of 1 wt% EGZnO/HY was found to be the optimum dosage for 10 mg L−1 MB, which resulted in 80% of maximum decolorization after 6 h of contact time at pH 3 under fluorescent light (420 nm). Increasing the EGZnO loading led to additional formation of Si O Zn bonds and lessened the number of EGZnO nanoparticles, which then reduced the photodecolorization percentage of MB.The photocatalytic reaction was follows the first-order Langmuir–Hinshelwood model, and gives partially mineralization. The photocatalyst was still stable after five cycling runs with no Zn leaching

Big Bang vs. Gradualism – A Productivity Analysis

In the beginning of the 1990s, the former socialist countries of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union began reforming their economies. Yet despite two decades of research, it is still unclear which reform path – gradual or radical – is better for long-run growth. Unlike most other studies on the topic, which concentrate on the growth of output per capita, this paper compares the two alternative reform approaches based on the analysis of productivity. We estimate a Malmquist multifactor productivity index for 22 transition economies over 17 years to compare their relative performance depending on their speed of reform. The Malmquist index is further decomposed into efficiency and technological change, and statistical inference is obtained using a smoothed bootstrap procedure. The main results are that the radical reformers exhibit higher rates of productivity growth in the initial years of transition, while the gradual countries do better in the later years. Over the whole time period a gradual reform strategy is superior to faster reforms. These findings have important implications for reforms in the remaining non-market economies and many developing countries

Affandi Road was an area with high economic activity. A consequence was the presence of on-street parking at the turning facility (U-turn) caused a conflict in the form of congestion. This research was intended to determine the performance of the road segment, queue length, delay and proposed alternative solutions for improvement. The research was conducted with the field survey method. The analysis was using VISSIM microsimulation refers to Reverse Planning 06/BM/2005 and the level of performance of road performance refers to the Minister of Transport Regulation number PM 96 of 2015. The result indicated that the average vehicle speed of existing conditions VISSIM analysis was 29,26 km/hour for the North to South and 41,43 km/hour for the South to North, the average queue length of 22,23 meters, and the average delay time of 13,66 seconds. Three alternative solutions were implementing prohibited on-street parking at the U-turn area. From the three solutions, the best one is with a decreasing percentage was 27,84% for the queue length and 46,53% for the delay, while the speed increases of 38,54% for North to South and 20,20% for South to North
