Temporal muscle thickness is an independent prognostic marker in patients with progressive glioblastoma: translational imaging analysis of the EORTC 26101 trial

BACKGROUND: Temporal muscle thickness (TMT) was described as surrogate marker of skeletal muscle mass. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic relevance of TMT in patients with progressive glioblastoma. METHODS: TMT was analyzed on cranial magnetic resonance images of 596 patients with progression of glioblastoma after radio-chemotherapy enrolled in the EORTC 26101 trial. An optimal TMT cutoff for overall survival (OS) and progression free survival (PFS) was defined in the training cohort (n=260, phase 2). Patients were grouped as "below" or "above" the TMT cutoff and associations with OS and PFS were tested using the Cox model adjusted for important risk factors. Findings were validated in a test cohort (n=308, phase 3). RESULTS: An optimal baseline TMT cutoff of 7.2 mm was obtained in the training cohort for both OS and PFS (AUC=0.64). Univariate analyses estimated a hazard ratio (HR) of 0.54 (95% CI: 0.42, 0.70, p<0.0001) for OS and a HR of 0.49 (95% CI: 0.38, 0.64, p<0.0001) for PFS for the comparison of training cohort patients above versus below the TMT cutoff. Similar results were obtained in Cox models adjusted for important risk factors with relevance in the trial for OS (HR of 0.54, 95% CI: 0.41, 0.70, p<0.0001) and PFS (HR of 0.47, 95% CI: 0.36, 0.61, p<0.0001). Results were confirmed in the validation cohort. CONCLUSION: Reduced TMT is an independent negative prognostic parameter in patients with progressive glioblastoma and may help to facilitate patient management by supporting patient stratification for therapeutic interventions or clinical trials

National and subnational short-term forecasting of COVID-19 in Germany and Poland during early 2021

    Get PDF
We compare forecasts of weekly case and death numbers for COVID-19 in Germany and Poland based on 15 different modelling approaches. These cover the period from January to April 2021 and address numbers of cases and deaths one and two weeks into the future, along with the respective uncertainties. We find that combining different forecasts into one forecast can enable better predictions. However, case numbers over longer periods were challenging to predict. Additional data sources, such as information about different versions of the SARS-CoV-2 virus present in the population, might improve forecasts in the future

Drugs and supplements in amateur boxing: pugilistic amateurism and ideologies of performance

This research, which is based on the thoughts and experiences of coaches, athletes, officials and others involved in amateur boxing, explores the use of supplements, recreational and performance-enhancing drugs in the sport. After providing some context through a discussion of ideologies that shape elite sport, some key methodological issues are briefly described. The findings explore the manner in which ideologies of performance are shaped in relation to the notion of 'pugilistic amateurism'. In this way, the paper maps out a theoretical scaffold that can be used to understand the manner in which 'old school' training methods and participation in sport align with 'traditional' understandings of work-class manhood to produce an ideological tension with a win-at-all-costs mentality. This sheds light on the ways that boxing gyms might be understood as havens where drugs use can be resisted at the same times as potentially positive behaviours can be learned

Review of journal of cardiovascular magnetic resonance 2010

    Get PDF
There were 75 articles published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (JCMR) in 2010, which is a 34% increase in the number of articles since 2009. The quality of the submissions continues to increase, and the editors were delighted with the recent announcement of the JCMR Impact Factor of 4.33 which showed a 90% increase since last year. Our acceptance rate is approximately 30%, but has been falling as the number of articles being submitted has been increasing. In accordance with Open-Access publishing, the JCMR articles go on-line as they are accepted with no collating of the articles into sections or special thematic issues. Last year for the first time, the Editors summarized the papers for the readership into broad areas of interest or theme, which we felt would be useful to practitioners of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) so that you could review areas of interest from the previous year in a single article in relation to each other and other recent JCMR articles [1]. This experiment proved very popular with a very high rate of downloading, and therefore we intend to continue this review annually. The papers are presented in themes and comparison is drawn with previously published JCMR papers to identify the continuity of thought and publication in the journal. We hope that you find the open-access system increases wider reading and citation of your papers, and that you will continue to send your quality manuscripts to JCMR for publication

Genetic diversity in cultivated carioca common beans based on molecular marker analysis

A wide array of molecular markers has been used to investigate the genetic diversity among common bean species. However, the best combination of markers for studying such diversity among common bean cultivars has yet to be determined. Few reports have examined the genetic diversity of the carioca bean, commercially one of the most important common beans in Brazil. In this study, we examined the usefulness of two molecular marker systems (simple sequence repeats – SSRs and amplified fragment length polymorphisms – AFLPs) for assessing the genetic diversity of carioca beans. The amount of information provided by Roger’s modified genetic distance was used to analyze SSR data and Jaccards similarity coefficient was used for AFLP data. Seventy SSRs were polymorphic and 20 AFLP primer combinations produced 635 polymorphic bands. Molecular analysis showed that carioca genotypes were quite diverse. AFLPs revealed greater genetic differentiation and variation within the carioca genotypes (Gst = 98% and Fst = 0.83, respectively) than SSRs and provided better resolution for clustering the carioca genotypes. SSRs and AFLPs were both suitable for assessing the genetic diversity of Brazilian carioca genotypes since the number of markers used in each system provided a low coefficient of variation. However, fingerprint profiles were generated faster with AFLPs, making them a better choice for assessing genetic diversity in the carioca germplasm

Compensations for service uniform officers resulting from accidents at work or occupational diseases : analysis of the newest regulations

The articles raises a question of compensations for service uniform officers who became submitted to the authority of the Ministry of International Affairs. Those indemnities are only payable for the case of accident during the service, or personal items which were lost or any serious illness undergone m the process. Although the new Act has been in force forever two years, while referring within structure to the ones having applied to ordinary workers, there is however a some kind of distinctiveness stemming from the core of the service, as a way of employment, that might at the same time - turn out controversial. The present paper attempts thus to make clear all the issues as well as present the circumstances of receiving the indemnity, and be in search of a solution for the disputed subject matter
