    Physical activity and bone health in schoolchildren: the mediating role of fitness and body fat

Available from Public Library of Science via the DOI in this record.BACKGROUND: The relationship between physical activity (PA) and bone health is well known, although the role of percent body fat (%BF) and fitness as confounders or mediators in this relationship remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the association between PA and bone mineral content (BMC) is mediated by %BF and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). METHODS: In this cross sectional study, BMC, total %BF (by DXA), vigorous PA (VPA), CRF, age and height were measured in 132 schoolchildren (62 boys, aged 8-11 years). ANCOVA was used to test differences in BMC by %BF, CRF and VPA, controlling for different sets of confounders. Simple mediation analyses and serial multiple mediation analyses were fitted to examine whether the relationship between PA and BMC is mediated by %BF and fitness. RESULTS: Children with high %BF had higher total body BMC than their peers after controlling for all sets of confounders. Children with good CRF or VPA had significantly less total body BMC after controlling for age and sex but in children with good CRF this inverse relation disappeared after adjusting by %BF. %BF and CRF both act as a full mediator in the association between VPA and BMC, after inclusion of the potential confounders in the models.     Olive oil consumption and all-cause, cardiovascular and cancer mortality in an adult mediterranean population in Spain

    Objective: We assessed the association between usual olive oil consumption (OOC) and all-cause, cardiovascular (CVD) and cancer mortality in an adult population in Spain. Materials and methods: OOC was evaluated at baseline in 1,567 participants aged 20 years and older from the Valencia Nutrition Study in Spain using validated food frequency questionnaires. During an 18-year follow-up period, 317 died, 115 due to CVD and 82 due to cancer. Cox regression models were used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). Results: After adjusting for demographic and lifestyle factors, the OOC was associated with a lower risk of all-cause, CVD and cancer mortality. Compared to the less than once per month consumption, the consumption of up to one tablespoon per day was associated with a 9% lower risk of all-cause mortality (HR: 0.91; 95%CI: 0.68-1.22) and the consumption of 2 or more tablespoons with a 31% lower risk of all-cause mortality (HR: 0.69; 95%CI: 0.50–0.93; p-trend = 0.011). The consumption of 2 or more tablespoons per day was also associated with lower risk of mortality for CVD (HR: 0.54; 95%CI: 0.32–0.91; p-trend = 0.018) and cancer (HR: 0.49, 95%CI: 0.26–0.94; p-trend = 0.019). Conclusion: Higher olive oil consumption was associated with lower long-term risk of all-cause, CVD and cancer mortality in an adult Mediterranean population. The maximum benefit was observed for the consumption of two or more tablespoons per day.     Abstract The sensitivity of Andosols to water erosion in a forest environment (Garajonay National Park, Gomera, Canary Islands) has been studied by evaluating USLE's erodibility factor (K), the actual susceptibility of soil to separation by means of two tests for measuring the stability of aggregates, and its relationship with relevant physicochemical properties. The results show the limited validity of the conventional estimation of erodibility in andic soils, where the sensitivity towards erosion is mostly related to their content in organometallic compounds

    Broadening and exploiting the genetic base of white lupin

    White lupin is a European crop with a long history of domestication and high potential interest for high-protein food or feedstuff. This report aims to summarize the research steps that were undertaken to (i) verify the extent of genetic diversity exploited by modern breeding, (ii) identify elite bitter-seed landraces and sweet-seed germplasm aimed to broaden the genetic base for European breeding, (iii) assess the genetic variation for tolerance to key abiotic stresses in the germplasm of the novel genetic base, and (iv) verify the potential of genomic models based on genotyping-bysequencing (GBS) SNP data to select simultaneously and cost-efficiently for some complex traits. Molecular diversity patterns of 83 landraces from nine major historical cropping regions and 15 commercial varieties confirmed that modern plant breeding exploited only a modest part of the crop genetic variation. Germplasm evaluation experiments for adaptation to severe drought or calcareous soil revealed substantial genetic variation (Annicchiarico and Thami-Alami, 2012; Annicchiarico et al., 2018), which, along with other information, was exploited to identify four elite landraces and four elite, sweet-seed lines that acted as parents of a broadly-based population. Some 144 sweet-seed lines extracted from this population were evaluated for grain yield under severe drought in a managed environment of Italy and for adaptation to moderately calcareous soil in a spring-sown environment of the Netherlands and an autumn-sown environment of Greece. We report on the observed line variation for these traits, and on the construction of genomic selection models and their ability to predict the line adaptation to drought or lime soil based on cross validations. Genome-enabled models may be used also to select for tolerance to anthracnose and the sweet-seed trait

    Masa muscular y valores espirométricos en el equipo de atletismo de fondo de la BUAP

    Introduction. Spirometry is a test to assess respiratory function and its evaluation in athletes is useful, since physical abilities are essential for good sports performance. Muscle mass (MM) may be a determining factor that would explain the variability of spirometry results in athletes. For these reasons, the objective of the study is to associate MM and its distribution with spirometric values ​​in the BUAP Athletics team. Materials and methods. Sample: 25 athletes from the BUAP men's track and field team. Anthropometric evaluation: through Bioelectrical Impedance to obtain MM, from the trunk (MMtr) and from the lower extremities (MMei). Assessment of lung function: through forced spirometry obtaining: forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume at the first second (FEV1), peak flow and Tiffenau index. Results. A positive correlation was found between all the spirometric variables and those of the MM, with the MMei having the highest correlation, the strongest correlations with PEF and FEV1 with respect to the MMei (0.664 and 0.865 respectively). Conclusions. The distribution of MM has a significant influence on the respiratory function of athletes and it is the MMei that has the greatest association with spirometric values ​​(FEV1 and PEF). Introducción. La espirometría es una prueba para valorar la función respiratoria y su evaluación en atletas resulta útil, ya que las capacidades físicas son esenciales para un buen desempeño deportivo. La masa muscular (MM) pueden ser factor determinante que explicaría la variabilidad de los resultados de la espirometría en atletas. Por estas razones el objetivo del estudio es asociar la MM y su distribución con valores espirométricos en el equipo de Atletismo de fondo de la BUAP. Materiales y Métodos.  Muestra: 25 deportistas del equipo masculino de atletismo de fondo de la BUAP. Evaluación antropométrica: a través de Impedancia Bioeléctrica para obtener MM, del tronco (MMtr) y de las extremidades inferiores (MMei). Valoración de la función pulmonar: a través de espirometría forzada obteniendo: capacidad vital forzada (CVF), volumen espiratorio forzado al primer segundo (VEF1), pico flujo e Índice de Tiffenau. Resultados. Se encontró correlación positiva entre todas las variables espirométricas y las de la MM, siendo la MMei la que mayor correlación presento, siendo las correlaciones más fuertes con PEF y VEF1 respecto a la MMei (0.664 y 0.865 respectivamente). Conclusiones. La distribución de la MM tiene influencia significativa en la función respiratoria de los atletas y es la MMei la que tiene mayor asociación con valores espirométricos (VEF1 y el PEF)

    Effectiveness and safety of guselkumab for the treatment of psoriasis in real-world settings at 24 weeks : A retrospective, observational, multicentre study by the Spanish Psoriasis Group

Little has been published on the effectiveness and safety of guselkumab in the treatment of psoriasis in clinical practice. The ojective of this study was to assess the effectiveness and safety of guselkumab at 24 weeks in patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in routine clinical practice. A retrospective, multicentre study of adult patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis treated with guselkumab for at least 24 weeks was carried out in Spain. We studied 343 patients, 249 of whom were followed for 24 weeks. By week 24, the mean (SD) psoriasis area severity index (PASI) had decreased from 11.1 (7.3) to 1.7 (2.8) (−9.3; [−10.2;-8.4]), 85.9% of the patients had achieved PASI score of 4 or less and 77.9% a PASI score of 2 or less. In terms of relative PASI response, 59.4% of the patients achieved a PASI-90 response and 49.0% a PASI-100 response. On multivariate analysis, two factors reduced the probability of a PASI of 2 or less at 24 weeks: a BMI ≥30 (OR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.22-0.88) and a greater previous exposure to biologic therapy (OR, 0.69; 95% CI, [0.56-0.84]). Adverse events were rare (9.9%) and led to withdrawal from treatment in only nine patients (2.6%) by the end of the follow-up period. The results of this study confirm the high efficacy and safety of guselkumab indicated by the clinical trial data. In clinical practice, the absolute PASI score appears to be a better marker of response to treatment than the relative value

    Measuring Resilience in Adult Women Using the 10-Items Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Role of Trauma Exposure and Anxiety Disorders

    International audiencePURPOSE: Resilience is the ability of individuals to adapt positively in the face of trauma. Little is known, however, about lifetime factors affecting resilience. METHODS: We assessed the effects of psychiatric disorder and lifetime trauma history on the resilience self-evaluation using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10) in a high-risk-women sample. Two hundred and thirty eight community-dwelling women, including 122 participants in a study of breast cancer survivors and 116 participants without previous history of cancer completed the CD-RISC-10. Lifetime psychiatric symptoms were assessed retrospectively using two standardized psychiatric examinations (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview and Watson's Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Inventory). RESULTS: Multivariate logistic regression adjusted for age, education, trauma history, cancer, current psychiatric diagnoses, and psychoactive treatment indicated a negative association between current psychiatric disorder and high resilience compared to low resilience level (OR = 0.44, 95% CI [0.21-0.93]). This was related to anxiety and not mood disorder. A positive and independent association with a trauma history was also observed (OR = 3.18, 95% CI [1.44-7.01]). CONCLUSION: Self-evaluation of resilience is influenced by both current anxiety disorder and trauma history. The independent positive association between resilience and trauma exposure may indicate a "vaccination" effect. This finding need to be taken into account in future studies evaluating resilience in general or clinical populations
