    Military Use of the Space Shuttle

    There is little doubt that the Space Shuttle will provide a quantum jump in man\u27s activity in space. It will provide the means to make the transition from primarily machine-oriented space activities to man-orientated activities. Man\u27s activities will move from exploratory to exploitative. The purpose of this article is to examine the military aspects of this transition in the context of the legal regime of outer space that has evolved in the more than two decades since the orbiting of Sputnik I. Is the prospect of increased military activities and capabilities compatible with this regime or conversely, does the legal regime restrict military activities in space and if so, what are those restrictions? A discussion of this type must of necessity include, in addition to the legal principles involved, a discussion of our national space policy and our present and future military use of space. Moreover, since international law evolves from the practice of States and is attuned to the realities of world politics and power, any discussion of the military use of space would be incomplete without a discussion of the military space programs of the Soviet Union and its view regarding the legality of the military use of space

    Moving from Computed Radiography to Digital Radiography, a Collaborative Approach to Improve Image Quality

    The University of New Mexico School of Medicine (UNM SOM) and the University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) have long worked together to deliver high quality patient care to the citizens of New Mexico and the surrounding region. One of the key ways that the Department of Radiology has worked to deliver the highest quality care to the patients of UNMH is by establishing a Quality Assurance Committee. The committee is composed of radiologists, technologists, medical physicists and support staff who all lend their expertise to review and help solve any quality assurance issues for the department. This poster is one example of how a team\u27 within the Quality Assurance Committee helped solve an important image quality issue within our department, and improved patient care. This project is an example of how to form a team (triad) comprised of radiologists, technologists, and physicists to utilize post-processing techniques in digital radiography (DR) in order to optimize image acquisition and improve image quality.\u2

    Nonlinearities and Carrier Dynamics in Refractory Plasmonic TiN Thin Films

    Titanium nitride is widely used in plasmonic applications, due to its robustness and optical properties which resemble those of gold. Despite this interest, the nonlinear properties have only recently begun to be investigated. In this work, beam deflection and non-degenerate femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy (800 nm pump and 650 nm probe) were used to measure the real and imaginary transient nonlinear response of 30-nm-thick TiN films on sapphire and fused silica in the metallic region governed by Fermi-smearing nonlinearities. In contrast to other metals, it is found that TiN exhibits non-instantaneous positive refraction and reverse saturable absorption whose relaxation is dominated by slow thermal diffusion into the substrate lasting several hundred picoseconds. Ultrafast contributions arising from hot-electron excitations are found to be a small part of the overall response, only appearing significant in the TiN on fused silica at irradiance levels above 100 GW-cm-2. The modeling and origin of this response is discussed, and TiN is found to be adept at achieving ultrafast (below 1 ps) lattice heating which, combined with the robustness and low-cost of the material may prove useful in various thermo-optical applications such as local heating, heat-assisted processes, and nanoscale heat transfer

    Spatially valid proprioceptive cues improve the detection of a visual stimulus

    Vision and proprioception are the main sensory modalities that convey hand location and direction of movement. Fusion of these sensory signals into a single robust percept is now well documented. However, it is not known whether these modalities also interact in the spatial allocation of attention, which has been demonstrated for other modality pairings. The aim of this study was to test whether proprioceptive signals can spatially cue a visual target to improve its detection. Participants were instructed to use a planar manipulandum in a forward reaching action and determine during this movement whether a near-threshold visual target appeared at either of two lateral positions. The target presentation was followed by a masking stimulus, which made its possible location unambiguous, but not its presence. Proprioceptive cues were given by applying a brief lateral force to the participant’s arm, either in the same direction (validly cued) or in the opposite direction (invalidly cued) to the on-screen location of the mask. The d′ detection rate of the target increased when the direction of proprioceptive stimulus was compatible with the location of the visual target compared to when it was incompatible.     The Radio Signatures of the First Supernovae

    Primordial stars are key to primeval structure formation as the first stellar components of primeval galaxies, the sources of cosmic chemical enrichment and likely cosmic reionization, and they possibly gave rise to the supermassive black holes residing at the centres of galaxies today. While the direct detection of individual Pop III stars will likely remain beyond reach for decades to come, we show their supernova remnants may soon be detectable in the radio. We calculate radio synchrotron signatures between 0.5 - 35 GHz from hydrodynamical computations of the supernova remnants of Pop III stars in minihaloes. We find that hypernovae yield the brightest systems, with observed radio fluxes as high as 1 - 10 muJy. Less energetic Type II supernovae yield remnants about a factor of 30 dimmer and pair-instability supernova remnants are dimmer by a factor of more than 10,000. Because of the high gas densities of the progenitor environments, synchrotron losses severely limit the maximum emission frequencies, producing a distinctive peaked radio spectrum distinguishable from normal galactic supernova remnant spectra. Hypernovae radio remnants should be detectable by existing radio facilities like eVLA and eMERLIN while Type II supernova remnants will require the Square Kilometre Array. The number counts of hypernova remnants at z > 20 with fluxes above 1 muJy are expected to be one per hundred square degree field, increasing to a few per square degree if they form down to z = 10. The detection of a z > 20 Type II supernova remnant brighter than 1 nJy would require a 100 - 200 square degree field, although only a 1 - 2 square degree field for those forming down to z = 10. Hypernova and Type II supernova remnants are easily separated from one another by their light curves, which will enable future surveys to use them to constrain the initial mass function of Pop III stars.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures; major revision; to appear in MNRA

    Experiences of venue based exercise interventions for people with stroke in the UK: a systematic review and thematic synthesis of qualitative research

    Background The physical benefits of exercise following stroke are research evidenced and the UK stroke population is increasingly encouraged to engage with exercise interventions. A synthesis of qualitative research is required to further understand the perceived experience and psychosocial effect of exercise for people with stroke. Objectives To provide a systematic search and synthesis of evidence about the experiences and reported impact of participation in venue based exercise following stroke in the UK. Data sources Eligible studies were identified through a rigorous search of Medline, Cinahl, AMED, PsycINFO, SportDiscus, Proquest and ETHOS from January 2000 until December 2017. Study eligibility criteria Full text qualitative studies or service evaluations conducted in the UK which explored the reported experience of venue based exercise amongst people with stroke. Study synthesis and appraisal Included studies were evaluated through application of the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research. Data synthesis using a thematic approach generated descriptive and analytical themes. Results Six research studies and one service evaluation met the inclusion criteria; methodological quality was variable. These studies highlighted that people with stroke gain confidence and renewed identity through exercise participation. Perceived improvements in physical function were reported and participants enjoyed stroke specific exercise programmes in de-medicalised venues. Limitations The studies only accessed people who had completed the exercise programmes; non-completers were not represented. Conclusion Venue based exercise programmes have a positive effect on perceived wellbeing following stroke. Further research into the reasons for discontinuation of exercise participation following stroke is required

    Pathogenesis of aerosolized Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus infection in guinea pigs

    Mice and guinea pigs were experimentally exposed to aerosols containing regionally-distinct strains (NJ1959 or ArgM) of eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) at two exclusive particle size distributions. Mice were more susceptible to either strain of aerosolized EEEV than were guinea pigs; however, clinical signs indicating encephalitis were more readily observed in the guinea pigs. Lower lethality was observed in both species when EEEV was presented at the larger aerosol distribution (> 6 μm), although the differences in the median lethal dose (LD50) were not significant. Virus isolation and immunohistochemistry indicated that virus invaded the brains of guinea pigs within one day postexposure, regardless of viral strain or particle size distribution. Immunohistochemistry further demonstrated that neuroinvasion occurred through the olfactory system, followed by transneuronal spread to all regions of the brain. Olfactory bipolar neurons and neurons throughout the brain were the key viral targets. The main microscopic lesions in infected guinea pigs were neuronal necrosis, inflammation of the meninges and neuropil of the brain, and vasculitis in the brain. These results indicate that guinea pigs experimentally infected by aerosolized EEEV recapitulate several key features of fatal human infection and thus should serve as a suitable animal model for aerosol exposure to EEEV
