This document includes the full text of Colonel Israel Angell\u27s Diaries compiled by Edward Field and published in 1899. It also includes the text of three manuscript diaries from the collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston, Massachusetts. These diaries were transcribed and digitized by Norman Desmarais and inserted in their proper location in Field\u27s text. The diaries are organized here by the year of coverage rather than by the individual manuscripts as in Field\u27s book. The five chronological sections of this combined text are also available as individual downloads in the supplemental materials section of this page

Slow dynamics and aging in a non-randomly frustrated spin system

A simple, non-disordered spin model has been studied in an effort to understand the origin of the precipitous slowing down of dynamics observed in supercooled liquids approaching the glass transition. A combination of Monte Carlo simulations and exact calculations indicates that this model exhibits an entropy vanishing transition accompanied by a rapid divergence of time scales. Measurements of various correlation functions show that the system displays a hierarchy of time scales associated with different degrees of freedom. Extended structures, arising from the frustration in the system, are identified as the source of the slow dynamics. In the simulations, the system falls out of equilibrium at a temperature $T_{g}$ higher than the entropy-vanishing transition temperature and the dynamics below $T_{g}$ exhibits aging as distinct from coarsening. The cooling rate dependence of the energy is also consistent with the usual glass formation scenario.Comment: 41 pages, 16 figures. Bibliography file is correcte

Ethics and EBM: acknowledging bias, accepting difference and embracing politics

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) has been effective because it confers both epistemic and moral authority, promising that both individual patient care and public health interventions are effective, safe and efficient, that these decisions and standards can be determined (and therefore judged) in a transparent manner and that this form of decision making is reliable, objective and value-free. The problem is that EBM refers to particular, ideologically and philosophically specific concepts of evidence, medicine and the relationship between them. The analysis of the ‘ethics’ of EBM, therefore, requires not only a critique of its philosophical naïvety and its attachment to modernism and positivism, but a critique of its social, cultural and political implications

Cryptophycins: cytotoxic cyclodepsipeptides with potential for tumor targeting

Journal of Peptide Science. 2017;23(7-8):514-531.Cryptophycins are a class of 16-membered highly cytotoxic macrocyclic depsipeptides isolated from cyanobacteria. The biological activity is based on their ability to interact with tubulin. They interfere with microtubule dynamics and prevent microtubules from forming correct mitotic spindles, which causes cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis. Their strong antiproliferative activities with 100-fold to 1000-fold potency compared with those of paclitaxel and vinblastine have been observed. Cryptophycins are highly promising drug candidates, as their biological activity is not negatively affected by P-glycoprotein, a drug efflux system commonly found in multidrug-resistant cancer cell lines and solid tumors. Cryptophycin-52 had been investigated in phase II clinical trials but failed because of its high neurotoxicity.
