Whereas traditional microeconomic analysis treats the household as a black box the New Home Economics approach by Becker/Gronau distinguishes between individuals, but family members have unitary preferences and therefore exhibit one unique, joint utility function. Within game-theoretic models of intra-family resource allocation – cooperative as non-cooperative games – the, generally different, individual preferences are determinants of all (possible) bargaining outcomes . Fingerprint-based in silico models for the prediction of P-glycoprotein substrates and inhibitors

AbstractP-Glycoprotein (P-gp, ABCB1) plays a significant role in determining the ADMET properties of drugs and drug candidates. Substrates of P-gp are not only subject to multidrug resistance (MDR) in tumor therapy, they are also associated with poor pharmacokinetic profiles. In contrast, inhibitors of P-gp have been advocated as modulators of MDR. However, due to the polyspecificity of P-gp, knowledge on the molecular basis of ligand–transporter interaction is still poor, which renders the prediction of whether a compound is a P-gp substrate/non-substrate or an inhibitor/non-inhibitor quite challenging. In the present investigation, we used a set of fingerprints representing the presence/absence of various functional groups for machine learning based classification of a set of 484 substrates/non-substrates and a set of 1935 inhibitors/non-inhibitors. Best models were obtained using a combination of a wrapper subset evaluator (WSE) with random forest (RF), kappa nearest neighbor (kNN) and support vector machine (SVM), showing accuracies >70%. Best P-gp substrate models were further validated with three sets of external P-gp substrate sources, which include Drug Bank (n=134), TP Search (n=90) and a set compiled from literature (n=76). FlaME: Flash Molecular Editor - a 2D structure input tool for the web

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>So far, there have been no Flash-based web tools available for chemical structure input. The authors herein present a feasibility study, aiming at the development of a compact and easy-to-use 2D structure editor, using Adobe's Flash technology and its programming language, ActionScript. As a reference model application from the Java world, we selected the Java Molecular Editor (JME). In this feasibility study, we made an attempt to realize a subset of JME's functionality in the Flash Molecular Editor (FlaME) utility. These basic capabilities are: structure input, editing and depiction of single molecules, data import and export in molfile format.</p> <p>Implementation</p> <p>The result of molecular diagram sketching in FlaME is accessible in V2000 molfile format. By integrating the molecular editor into a web page, its communication with the HTML elements on this page is established using the two JavaScript functions, <it>getMol() </it>and <it>setMol()</it>. In addition, structures can be copied to the <it>system clipboard</it>.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>A first attempt was made to create a compact single-file application for 2D molecular structure input/editing on the web, based on Flash technology. With the application examples presented in this article, it could be demonstrated that the Flash methods are principally well-suited to provide the requisite communication between the Flash object (application) and the HTML elements on a web page, using JavaScript functions.</p

Zwischen Reproduktions- und Erwerbsarbeit: der Zusammenhang von Kinderbetreuung, Pflege und Frauenerwerbstätigkeit

"Die Studie untersucht, in welchem Maß Reproduktionsarbeit, Pflegetätigkeiten und familiäre Strukturen Auswirkung haben auf die von Frauen am Erwerbsmarkt realisierten Arbeitsstunden. Kinderbetreuung sowie die Betreuung pflegebedürftiger Personen stehen hierbei im Vordergrund. Auf Grundlage von verknüpften Daten des österreichischen Mikrozensus aus 2001 und 2002 werden reduzierte Partizipationsgleichungen im Rahmen des Multinomialen Logit-Modells geschätzt. Darüber hinaus wird in Logit-Schätzungen die Neigung zur Vollzeitbeschäftigung unter Kontrolle nachfrageseitiger Indikatoren modelliert. In einem Exkurs wird der Zusammenhang zwischen sozio-demographischem Hintergrund des Partners und der Erwerbsbeteiligung der Frau untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass insbesondere Kinder im Vorschulalter und im Alter bis zu 14 Jahren mit einer erhöhten Wahrscheinlichkeit der Nichterwerbstätigkeit oder einer geringen Teilzeitbeschäftigung einhergehen. Lässt sich dieses Ergebnis auch für Pflege leistende Frauen beobachten, so zeigt sich indessen für im Haushalt lebende Eltern keine eindeutige Evidenz: Die Effekte deuten auf sowohl höheren Betreuungsbedarf wie auch auf Entlastung in z.B. der Kinderbetreuung hin. Eine solche lässt sich zudem für Frauen mit hoher Kontakthäufigkeit zu Geschwistern ableiten, hier zeigt sich ein positiver Effekt in Hinblick auf Erwerbsbeteiligung." (Autorenreferat

Determinanten abhängiger Selbstständigkeit in Österreich

"Die Studie analysiert die angebotsseitigen Strukturen abhängiger Selbstständigkeit in Österreich auf Grundlage von Daten des Mikrozensus 2001. Nach einer kurzen Einführung in die Abgrenzung atypischer Beschäftigung im Allgemeinen und abhängiger Selbstständigkeit im Besonderen zeigt die empirische Analyse, dass der Typus des abhängig Selbstständigen dem des 'normalen' Selbstständigen stärker ähnelt, als dem Profil von angestellten Erwerbstätigen. Familienstrukturindikatoren spielen insofern eine Rolle, als dass Verheiratete sowie Frauen mit steigender Kinderzahl mit höherer Wahrscheinlichkeit abhängig selbstständig sind. Darüber hinaus zeigt sich, dass abhängige Selbstständigkeit von Frauen mit eher niedriger Qualifikation, jedoch von Männern mit hoher Qualifikation ausgeübt wird. Ebenso weisen die Ergebnisse darauf hin, dass abhängige Selbstständigkeit und Alter positiv miteinander korrelieren. ReSurveyGermany: Vegetation-plot time-series over the past hundred years in Germany

Vegetation-plot resurvey data are a main source of information on terrestrial biodiversity change, with records reaching back more than one century. Although more and more data from re-sampled plots have been published, there is not yet a comprehensive open-access dataset available for analysis. Here, we compiled and harmonised vegetation-plot resurvey data from Germany covering almost 100 years. We show the distribution of the plot data in space, time and across habitat types of the European Nature Information System (EUNIS). In addition, we include metadata on geographic location, plot size and vegetation structure. The data allow temporal biodiversity change to be assessed at the community scale, reaching back further into the past than most comparable data yet available. They also enable tracking changes in the incidence and distribution of individual species across Germany. In summary, the data come at a level of detail that holds promise for broadening our understanding of the mechanisms and drivers behind plant diversity change over the last century

The Forty-Sixth Euro Congress on Drug Synthesis and Analysis: Snapshot

The 46th EuroCongress on Drug Synthesis and Analysis (ECDSA-2017) was arranged within the celebration of the 65th Anniversary of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia from 5-8 September 2017 to get together specialists in medicinal chemistry, organic synthesis, pharmaceutical analysis, screening of bioactive compounds, pharmacology and drug formulations; promote the exchange of scientific results, methods and ideas; and encourage cooperation between researchers from all over the world. The topic of the conference, Drug Synthesis and Analysis, meant that the symposium welcomed all pharmacists and/or researchers (chemists, analysts, biologists) and students interested in scientific work dealing with investigations of biologically active compounds as potential drugs. The authors of this manuscript were plenary speakers and other participants of the symposium and members of their research teams.
