    Aquest article explora la relació entre teoria i pràctica a través d'una sèrie de qüestions relacionades entre si. Es planteja que la pràctica professional, el pensament humà i l'enteniment teòric es relacionen dinàmicament en cada intent seriós de desenvolupament professional. Un dels objectius de l'article és reunir diferents fils argumentals dels meus recents escrits sobre la natura canviant del professionalisme a través d'una diversitat de grups ocupacionals, tant en el sector públic com en el dels serveis sense ànim de lucre, d'aquí les referències als meus propis escrits acadèmics sobre el tema. He tractat de seguir un estil informal d'acord amb l'origen de l'article, arran de les enriquidores converses que es van derivar del summament interessant seminari que va tenir lloc a la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) a l'octubre del 2003.This paper explores the relation between theory and practice through a series of linked questions. It argues that professional practice, human thoughtfulness and theoretical understanding are in dynamic interplay in any serious attempt at professional development. One of the purposes of the paper is to draw together various strands of my own recent writing on the changing nature of professionalism across a variety of occupational groups within the public and non profit-making sectors -hence the references to some of my own academic writing in this area. I have tried to adopt an informal style that seems appropriate to the origins of the paper in the highly engaging seminar and rich conversations held at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in October 2003.Este artículo explora la relación entre teoría y práctica a través de una serie de cuestiones relacionadas entre sí. Se plantea que la práctica profesional, el pensamiento humano y el entendimiento teórico se relacionan dinámicamente en cada intento serio de desarrollo profesional. Uno de los objetivos del artículo es reunir diferentes hilos argumentales de mis recientes escritos sobre la naturaleza cambiante del profesionalismo a través de una diversidad de grupos ocupacionales, tanto en el sector público como en el de los servicios sin ánimo de lucro, de ahí las referencias a mis propios escritos académicos sobre el tema. He tratado de seguir un estilo informal acorde con el origen del artículo, a raíz de las enriquecedoras conversaciones que se derivaron del sumamente interesante seminario que tuvo lugar en la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) en octubre del 2003

The essence of friendship, she believed, consisted in discourse, and it is only through discourse, she argued, that the world is rendered humane. This book explores some of the key ideas in Hannah Arendt's work through a study of four lifelong friendships -- with Heinrich Blücher, Martin Heidegger, Karl Jaspers and Mary McCarthy. The book draws on correspondence from both sides, illuminating our understanding of the social contexts within which Arendt's thinking developed and was clarified. It offers a cultural history of ideas: shedding light on two core ideas in Arendt - of 'plurality' and 'promise', and on how those particular ideas emerged through a particular set of relationships, at a significant moment in the history of the West. This book offers an original and accessible 'way in' to Arendt's work for students and scholars of politics, philosophy, intellectual history and literature

This chapter developed from a number of conversations that took place at the Fourth International Conference on Value and Virtue in Practice-Based Research, the twin themes of which were 'openness' and 'criticality'. These chance and often fleeting conversations focused on ideas explored in the keynote address that Jon delivered at the conference, but spanned out into a wider discussion of the relevance of those ideas within different areas of professional practice

    Experiences and psychological wellbeing outcomes associated with bullying in treatment-seeking transgender and gender-diverse youth

    This paper is in closed access until 11 June 2020.Purpose: Bullying in the adult transgender population is well documented, but less is known about bullying among transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) youth. Studies have begun to explore experiences of bullying and the associated psychological distress in TGD youth; however, they often fail to distinguish among the separate groups within LGBT samples. This study sought to explore the prevalence, nature, and outcomes of bullying in TGD youth attending a transgender health service in the United Kingdom (UK), taking into account birth-assigned sex and out and social transition status. Methods: Prior to their first appointment at a specialist gender clinic, participants completed a brief sociodemographic questionnaire, a questionnaire assessing experiences and outcomes of bullying, and a clinically-validated measure of anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale). Results: A total of 274 young TGD people aged 16 to 25 years participated in the study. The majority of participants (86.5%) reported having experienced bullying, predominantly in school. Bullying was more prevalent in birth-assigned females and in out individuals, and commonly consisted of homophobic/transphobic (particularly in socially-transitioned individuals) or appearance-related (particularly in out individuals) name-calling. Individuals who reported having experienced bullying showed greater anxiety symptomology and also self-reported effects on anxiety, depression, and self-esteem. Birth-assigned females also reported greater effects on family relationships and social life. Conclusion: These findings indicate very high levels of bullying within the young TGD population attending a transgender health service in the UK, which affects wellbeing significantly. More intervention work and education need to be introduced in schools to reduce the amount of bullying

    A comparison of mental health symptomatology and levels of social support in young treatment seeking transgender individuals who identify as binary and non-binary

    Background: Previous research has consistently reported high rates of mental health symptomatology and lower social support in young treatment seeking transgender individuals. However, these studies have failed to distinguish between transgender people who identify within the gender binary and those who identify as non-binary. Aims: This study aimed to compare levels of mental health symptomatology (anxiety, depression, and non-suicidal self-injury behavior) and social support of treatment seeking non-binary transgender young individuals with those self-identified as binary transgender young individuals. All participants attended a national transgender health service in the UK during a 2-year period. Measures: Age and gender identity descriptors were collected, as well as clinical measures of anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), self-esteem (The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale), non-suicidal self-injury (Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: Treatment Related), and social support (Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support). Results: A total of 388 young people, aged 16–25 years, agreed participation; 331 (85.3%) identified as binary and 57 (14.7%) as non-binary. Analysis of the data showed the non-binary group experienced significantly more anxiety and depression and had significantly lower self-esteem than the binary group. There were no significant differences between groups in the likelihood of engaging in non-suicidal self-injury behavior or levels of social support.Conclusions: Non-binary identifying treatment seeking transgender youth are at increased risk of developing anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem compared to binary transgender youth. This may reflect the even greater barriers and feelings of discrimination that may be faced by those whose identity does not fit the notion of binary gender that is pervasive in how society views both cis- and transgender populations
