    “Be Brave Like Ukraine”: Strategic Communication and the Mediatization of War

    This article synthesizes the authors’ earlier research on strategic communication in Ukraine during its first year of enduring Russia’s full-scale invasion and the subsequent war of aggression in 2022. The analysis is framed within the academic fields of strategic communication, military innovation theory, and theories on the mediatization of war. It aims to provide a nuanced understanding of Ukrainian strategic communication by focusing on how it is shaped and functions within specific historical, cultural, political, and social milieus, thus offering a holistic view of its evolution and impact during wartime. The article highlights the importance of approaching strategic communications as an all-encompassing task, engaging government bodies and the wider academic society for an evidence-based policy-based lessons-learned approach. It is argued that the Ukrainian case illustrates that effective strategic communication is deeply intertwined with consistent action, societal unity, political strategy, and national identity

    Proof of concept for eradication of vancomycin resistant Enterococcus faecium from broiler farms

    BACKGROUND - Vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) in Swedish broiler production has been shown to persist at farms between batches. The aim of this study was therefore to determine the possibility to eliminate VRE by disinfection of compartments in broiler houses as a proof of concept. FINDINGS - VRE could not be detected in environmental samples from the disinfected test compartments in the broiler houses but was detected in environmental samples from the control compartments. The proportion of broilers colonized with VRE decreased in both the test and the control compartments. CONCLUSIONS - The results are promising and show that the occurrence of VRE in broiler houses can be reduced by adequate cleaning and disinfection with a combination of steam and formaldehyde

    Ungdomsarbetslöshetens möjligheter : En kvalitativ studie om nordisk identitet i ett ESF-finansierat samverkansprojekt

    Ungdomsarbetslösheten är rekordhög i Norden, samarbeten mellan en rad olika parter och aktörer har blivit aktuellt för att stävja den negativa utvecklingen. Studiens syfte är att följa och få insikt i samverkansprojektet Entreprenörskap över gränser, för att se hur känsla och medvetande om nordisk identitet kan spela in på ungdomarnas möjligheter på ett nordiskt arbetsmarknadsområde. Med kvalitativa intervjuer och enkätundersökning som empiriskt underlag analyseras och kartläggs, i kollaboration med tidigare forskning i ämnet, deltagarnas känsla av nordisk identitet samt vilka faktorer som beskriver identiteten och dess processer. Resultatet har visat att medverkan i projektet öppnat respondenternas tillika deltagarnas ögon för den nordiska arbetsmarknaden och därmed även ett medvetande om nordisk identitet. Undersökningen har även kommit fram till att nordisk identitet är ett svårdefinierat begrepp som innehåller långt fler aspekter än förväntat. Fler studier om projektets inverkan på ungdomar och deras känsla av nordisk identitet måste genomföras då respondenterna inte med full representativitet kan stå för hela urvalsgruppen

    Long-term welfare effects of repeated warm water treatments on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

    Warm water treatment has in recent years become widely used for ridding salmonids of sea lice in aquaculture although the consequences of the treatment for fish welfare are not adequately investigated. The objective of this study was to document potential long-term welfare effects of repeated warm water treatments on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Five weeks after a baseline welfare indicator scoring, non-anaesthetised Atlantic salmon ( = 1379 ± 313 g, n = 332) were treated individually in a chamber with seawater at a temperature of 34 °C (warm water treatment) or 9 °C (control treatment) for 30 s. The treatment was repeated after 23–24 days. During the second treatment, a subset of the fish was video recorded for behavioural analysis. Seventeen to eighteen days after the second treatment, welfare indicators were again scored, and organ samples were taken for histopathological examination. The repeated warm water treatments resulted in a significantly increased prevalence and/or severity of scale losses, snout wounds, various eye problems, and active fin injuries as well as a significantly reduced specific growth rate. The fish displayed an immediate, strong behavioural reaction when exposed to warm water, which was probably the main cause of the detected injuries.publishedVersio

    Costs of shoulder pain and resource use in primary health care: a cost-of-illness study in Sweden

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Painful shoulders pose a substantial socioeconomic burden. A prospective cost-of-illness study was performed to assess the costs associated with healthcare use and loss of productivity in patients with shoulder pain in primary health care in Sweden.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study was performed in western Sweden, in a region with 24 000 inhabitants. Data were collected during six months from electronic patient records at three primary healthcare centres in two municipalities. All patients between 20 and 64 years of age who presented with shoulder pain to a general practitioner or a physiotherapist were included. Diagnostic codes were used for selection, and the cases were manually controlled. The cost for sick leave was calculated according to the human capital approach. Sensitivity analysis was used to explore uncertainty in various factors used in the model.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>204 (103 women) patients, mean age 48 (SD 11) years, were registered. Half of the cases were closed within six weeks, whereas 32 patients (16%) remained in the system for more than six months. A fifth of the patients were responsible for 91% of the total costs, and for 44% of the healthcare costs. The mean healthcare cost per patient was €326 (SD 389) during six months. Physiotherapy treatments accounted for 60%. The costs for sick leave contributed to 84% of the total costs. The mean annual total cost was €4139 per patient. Estimated costs for secondary care increased the total costs by one third.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The model applied in this study provides valuable information that can be used in cost evaluations. Costs for secondary care and particularly for sick leave have a major influence on total costs and interventions that can reduce long periods of sick leave are warranted.</p

    Multiplicity dependence of the average transverse momentum in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC

    The average transverse momentum versus the charged-particle multiplicity NchN_{ch} was measured in p-Pb collisions at a collision energy per nucleon-nucleon pair sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02 TeV and in pp collisions at collision energies of s\sqrt{s} = 0.9, 2.76, and 7 Tev in the kinematic range 0.15 with NchN_{ch} is observed, which is much stronger than that measured in Pb-Pb collisions. For pp collisions, this could be attributed, within a model of hadronizing strings, to multiple-parton interactions and to a final-state color reconnection mechanism. The data in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions cannot be described by an incoherent superposition of nucleon-nucleon collisions and pose a challenge to most of the event generators.publishedVersio

    Energy dependence of the transverse momentum distributions of charged particles in pp collisions measured by ALICE

    Differential cross sections of charged particles in inelastic pp collisions as a function of pTp_T have been measured at s\sqrt{s} = 0.9, 2.76 and 7 TeV at the LHC. The pTp_T spectra are compared to NLO-pQCD calculations. Though the differential cross section for an individual s\sqrt{s} cannot be described by NLO-pQCD, the relative increase of cross section with s\sqrt{s} is in agreement with NLO-pQCD. Based on these measurements and observations, procedures are discussed to construct pp reference spectra at s\sqrt{s} = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV up to pTp_T = 50 GeV/c as required for the calculation of the nuclear modification factor in nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions.publishedVersio

    Measurement of the Cross Section for Electromagnetic Dissociation with Neutron Emission in Pb-Pb Collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV

    The first measurement of neutron emission in electromagnetic dissociation of 208Pb nuclei at the LHC is presented. The measurement is performed using the neutron Zero Degree Calorimeters of the ALICE experiment, which detect neutral particles close to beam rapidity. The measured cross sections of single and mutual electromagnetic dissociation of Pb nuclei at √sNN = 2.76 TeV with neutron emission are σ_single EMD = 187.2±0.2 (stat.) +13.8−12.0 (syst.) b and σ_mutual EMD = 6.2 ± 0.1 (stat.) ±0.4 (syst.) b respectively. The experimental results are compared to the predictions from a relativistic electromagnetic dissociation model.publishedVersio

    Charmonium and e+ee^+e^- pair photoproduction at mid-rapidity in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76 TeV

    The ALICE Collaboration at the LHC has measured the J/ψJ/\psi and ψ\psi' photoproduction at mid-rapidity in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76 TeV. The charmonium is identified via its leptonic decay for events where the hadronic activity is required to be minimal. The analysis is based on an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 23 μb1{\mu}b^{-1}, The cross section for coherent and incoherent J/ψJ/\psi production in the rapidity interval -0.9 < y < 0.9, are dσJ/ψcoh/dy=2.380.24+0.34(sta+sys)d\sigma_{J/\psi}^{coh}/dy = 2.38^{+0.34}_{-0.24}(sta+sys) mb and dσJ/ψinc/dy=0.980.17+0.19(sta+sys)d\sigma_{J/\psi}^{inc}/dy = 0.98^{+0.19}_{-0.17}(sta+sys) mb, respectively. The results are compared to theoretical models for J/ψJ/\psi production and the coherent cross section is found to be in good agreement with those models which include nuclear gluon shadowing consistent with EPS09 parametrization. In addition the cross section for the process γγe+e\gamma\gamma \to e^+e^- has been measured and found to be in agreement with the STARLIGHT Monte Carlo predictions.publishedVersio
