Privacy-friendly User Location Tracking with Smart Devices: The BeaT Prototype

    Get PDF
Customers use smart devices to share their location data with service providers to co-create personalized, location-based services. However, mobile apps that record movement profiles not only yield value-added service but also bear potential for abuse. Especially apps utilizing GPS-based tracking pose a privacy risk because they could–once enabled–unnoticeably record data in private situations. In response, we developed a privacy-friendly solution, called BeaT, that tracks user locations without GPS and gives users full control over the time and scope of data collection. We leverage Bluetooth Beacon technology to confine the perimeter in which tracking takes place. This paper presents the requirements, algorithmic design, prototypical implementation, real-world use case, and evaluation setting for BeaT

    Assessing TMS-induced D and I waves with spinal H-reflexes

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of motor cortex produces a series of descending volleys known as D (direct) and I (indirect) waves. In the present study, we questioned whether spinal H-reflexes can be used to dissect D waves and early and late I waves from TMS. We therefore probed H-reflex facilitation at arrival times of D and I waves at the spinal level and thereby changed TMS parameters that have previously been shown to have selective effects on evoked D and different I waves. We changed TMS intensity and current direction and applied a double-pulse paradigm known as short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI). Experiments were conducted in flexor carpi radialis (FCR) in the arm and soleus (SOL) in the leg. There were two major findings: 1) in FCR, H-reflex facilitation showed characteristic modulations with altered TMS parameters that correspond to the changes of evoked D and I waves; and 2) H-reflexes in SOL did not, possibly because of increased interference from other spinal circuits. Therefore, the most significant outcome of this study is that in FCR, H-reflexes combined with TMS seem to be a useful technique to dissect TMS-induced D and I waves. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Questions that relate to corticospinal function in pathophysiology and movement control demand sophisticated techniques to provide information about corticospinal mechanisms. We introduce a noninvasive electrophysiological technique that may be useful in describing such mechanisms in more detail by dissecting D and I waves from transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Based on the combination of spinal H-reflexes and TMS in the flexor carpi radialis muscle, the technique was shown to measure selective effects on D and I waves from changing TMS parameters

TCF/Lef1 activity controls establishment of diverse stem and progenitor cell compartments in mouse epidermis

This work investigates cell fate and lineages of hair follicles and sebaceous glands (SG) in the mouse epidermis. The combination of transgenic models with complementary tracing techniques provides unequivocal evidence for a direct contribution of bulge stem cells to the SG units as well as stem cell niches within the isthmus region

Clathrate hydrates as a sink of noble gases in Titan's atmosphere

We use a statistical thermodynamic approach to determine the composition of clathrate hydrates which may form from a multiple compound gas whose composition is similar to that of Titan's atmosphere. Assuming that noble gases are initially present in this gas phase, we calculate the ratios of xenon, krypton and argon to species trapped in clathrate hydrates. We find that these ratios calculated for xenon and krypton are several orders of magnitude higher than in the coexisting gas at temperature and pressure conditions close to those of Titan's present atmosphere at ground level. Furthermore we show that, by contrast, argon is poorly trapped in these ices. This trapping mechanism implies that the gas-phase is progressively depleted in xenon and krypton when the coexisting clathrate hydrates form whereas the initial abundance of argon remains almost constant. Our results are thus compatible with the deficiency of Titan's atmosphere in xenon and krypton measured by the {\it Huygens} probe during its descent on January 14, 2005. However, in order to interpret the subsolar abundance of primordial Ar also revealed by {\it Huygens}, other processes that occurred either during the formation of Titan or during its evolution must be also invoked.Comment: Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters, in pres

Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence Mapping of a Carbon Laser Produced Plasma

We present measurements of ion velocity distribution profiles obtained by laser induced fluorescence (LIF) on an explosive laser produced plasma (LPP). The spatio-temporal evolution of the resulting carbon ion velocity distribution was mapped by scanning through the Doppler-shifted absorption wavelengths using a tunable, diode-pumped laser. The acquisition of this data was facilitated by the high repetition rate capability of the ablation laser (1 Hz) which allowed the accumulation of thousand of laser shots in short experimental times. By varying the intensity of the LIF beam, we were able to explore the effects of fluorescence power against laser irradiance in the context of evaluating the saturation versus the non-saturation regime. The small beam size of the LIF beam led to high spatial resolution of the measurement compared to other ion velocity distribution measurement techniques, while the fast-gated operation mode of the camera detector enabled the measurement of the relevant electron transitions

When to consult a geneticist specialising in gestational trophoblastic disease

    Get PDF
Background: Gestational trophoblastic disease comprises hydatidiform moles and a rare group of malignancies that derive from trophoblasts. Although there are typical morphological features that may distinguish hydatidiform moles from non-molar products of conception, such features are not always present, especially at early stages of pregnancy. Furthermore, mosaic/chimeric pregnancies and twin pregnancies make pathological diagnosis challenging while trophoblastic tumours can also pose diagnostic problems in terms of their gestational or non-gestational origin. Objectives: To show that ancillary genetic testing can be used to aid diagnosis and clinical management of GTD. Methods: Each author identified cases where genetic testing, including short tandem repeat (STR) genotyping, ploidy analysis, next generation sequencing and immunostaining for p57, the product of the imprinted gene CDKN1C, facilitated accurate diagnosis and improved patient management. Representative cases were chosen to illustrate the value of ancillary genetic testing in different scenarios. Outcome: Genetic analysis of placental tissue can aid in determining the risk of developing gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, facilitating discrimination between low risk triploid (partial) and high risk androgenetic (complete) moles, discriminating between a hydatidiform mole twinned with a normal conceptus and a triploid conception and identification of androgenetic/biparental diploid mosaicism. STR genotyping of placental tissue and targeted gene sequencing of patients can identify women with an inherited predisposition to recurrent molar pregnancies. Genotyping can distinguish gestational from non-gestational trophoblastic tumours using tissue or circulating tumour DNA, and can also identify the causative pregnancy which is the key prognostic factor for placental site and epithelioid trophoblastic tumours. Conclusions and Outlook: STR genotyping and P57 immunostaining have been invaluable to the management of gestational trophoblastic disease in many situations. The use of next generation sequencing and of liquid biopsies are opening up new pathways for GTD diagnostics. Development of these techniques has the potential to identify novel biomarkers of GTD and further refine diagnosis
