    Machine Learning Algorithms – Application on Big Data to Predict Retention Actions Needs

    The use of Machine Learning techniques is increasingly commonplace in multiple practical applications. Nowadays, the results of the application of these techniques are already routinely influencing our life and day-to-day tasks. Suggestions of videos to visualize; which route to take to a destination; facial recognition in biometric and security systems; all are practical examples of the advances made in this area. Many Machine Learning models are black box, given the complexity of the problems addressed and their algorithmic nature and, sometimes, do not offer a perception of their decision-making processes or are not directly interpretable when it comes to the reasons that originate their forecasts and results. The use of Explanatory Methods highlights patterns in the data, allowing a more assertive interpretation of results. Thus, this dissertation intends to develop a prototype that combines Machine Learning techniques with Explanatory Methods in order to improve the evaluation and validation of indicators, making the process of obtaining results by the algorithm and how it is affected more consistent and assertive. From a commercial point of view, based on the results of the models applied to the data, the consequent definition or reengineering of strategies obtains better operational results and the continuous improvement of indicators. With this prototype I intend to demonstrate that, from a practical point of view, obtaining representative indicators of customer permanence/loyalty in an organization, applying Machine Learning techniques on real data, and using explanatory methods, once the influence and weight of the characteristics are interpreted from the data on the model/s, it will be possible to redefine and fine-tune operational strategies. Specifically, as a practical case of this dissertation, it is expected that corporate systems such as Customer Relationship Management systems can benefit from the results of this dissertation through the application of Machine Learning techniques and the interpretation of Explanatory Methods

    Youth policy adaptation in the spanish rural context: a case of study of youth policy programs

    This article aims to describe a series of policies concerning Spanish youth and their degree of adaptation to Spanish rural areas in terms of the key elements of social dynamics in Spain's rural areas. It considers some of the general youth policies being implemented, and identifies those which appear to be closer to these specific territories. After discussing these policies, it is clear that, on the one hand, there is a lack of flexibility and adaptation to the particular circumstances of rural areas. However, on the other hand, it is also possible to cautiously point out some policies which do indeed propose more appropriate actions for rural areas, as well as observe pilot experiences and partnerships between NGOs and the administration that not only have some outstanding elements, but also the potential to stretch into the futur

    [ES] El objetivo principal del presente Trabajo de Fin de Grado (TFG) es la elaboración de una herramienta de autor interactiva, multimedia y multilingüe que sirva de ejemplo para en un futuro crear más aplicaciones para acercar a los alumnos a conceptos léxicos específicos sobre las distintas especialidades de la ingeniería. Se ha utilizado para este ejemplo la temática de la robótica industrial, y se ha creado un glosario base para el desarrollo de esta herramienta. Asimismo, con este trabajo se espera tanto contribuir a la mejora de la enseñanza en la Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) al facilitar y agilizar el aprendizaje mediante el e-learning, como además promover el uso de lenguas extranjeras como vehiculares mediante su uso en materias de carácter más concreto, tal como nos indica la metodología AICLE (Aprendizaje Integrado de Contenidos y Lenguas Extranjeras).[EN] The main objective of this Final Degree Project (FDP) is the development of a interactive, multimedia and multilingual authoring tool that will serve as an example to create more applications in the future to bring students closer to specific lexical concepts about the different specialties of engineering. The theme of industrial robotics has been used for this example, and a base glossary has been created for the development of this tool.     The influence of relationship networks on academic performance in higher education: a comparative study between students of a creative and a non-creative discipline

    In recent years, the literature has highlighted the importance of relational aspects on student attainment in higher education. Much of this previous work agrees with the idea that students' connectedness has beneficial effects on their performance. However, this literature has generally overlooked the influence that the discipline of study may have on this relationship, especially when creative contexts are addressed. In this sense and with the aim of looking deeper into this topic, this paper attempts to analyze by means of social network analysis techniques the relationship between social ties and academic performance in two bachelor's degrees with divergent contents and competence profiles in terms of creativity. Our findings suggest that in non-creative disciplines, the closeness of the students to the core of relationships of their network may help them to perform better academically. However, in creative contexts, the relationship between social ties and academic performance shows the form of an inverted U-shaped curve.     Symbolic Data Analysis for the Assessment of User Satisfaction: An Application to Reading Rooms Services.

    Special edition of the European Scientific Journal (ESJ): Conference proceedings: 1st Annual International Interdisciplinary Conference AIIC 2013, 24-26 April, Azores Islands, Portugal.This paper re-examines and deepens the study of a portion of the data collected within the context of a wider 2007 research project conducted in the Autonomous Region of Azores. The 2007 study aimed to understand users’ habits, attitudes and cultural practices, concerning reading and utilization of different library services, archives and museums. Based upon knowledge that only data analysis of a representative sample can supply, the study aimed to identify the aspects that should be prioritized in a process of restructuring the cultural services of leisure and reading to be implemented. This paper, utilizing data from the 2007 study, presents some results from the Ascendant Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (AHCA) of symbolic objects, according to the treatment to which they were submitted. These objects are described by different symbolic attributes pertaining to the latent variable ‘Degree of Satisfaction’. This variable was evaluated according to different dimensions of on-the-spot reading and consultation services. The aggregation criteria used in this study belong to a parametric family of methods and the similarity measure used is the weighted generalized affinity coefficient, for symbolic data. The validation of the clustering results is based on some validation measures

    Jogo Responsável e Saúde Mental: Tópicos para uma Estratégia Integrada na Prevenção e Redução de Danos das Adições Comportamentais

    Problem gambling has become a major public health concern, with psychosocial and mental health consequences. Some efforts have been done in the last years by regulatory and health related bodies worldwide for assuring that betting can be safer and less harmful. A vast consensus concerning the need to promote Responsible Gambling strategies have been put forward, even though the implementation of policies in this domain is very broad, poorly systematized and often does not translate, in an evident manner, to consolidated and valid practices for promoting safe gambling and the prevention of morbidity. This paper aims to review theoretical and research‑based arguments supporting the need of investment in responsible gambling field, and to propose some recommendations for sponsoring strategic policies in which harm‑minimization and prevention tools are prioritized. A literature review was carried out through an intensive search of online electronic databases and collaborative contacts with researchers in the field of non‑substance addictive behaviors. Papers and documents from scientific and governmental boards, related to prevention and harm minimization or reduction of gambling problems and published between 1998 and 2018 were selected. Different tools in the field of responsible gambling are pointed as good and evidence‑based practices that need to be continuously implemented and replicated. Some others can be promising but need further research. The findings of this study may help many entities and stakeholders involved in this behavioral addiction field (researchers, governmental and health agencies, regulators and gambling industry) for strengthening responsible gambling national policies and strategies.Os problemas de jogo constituem uma preocupação crescente no domínio da saúde, com graves consequências psicossociais e na saúde mental. Alguns esforços a nível internacional têm sido empreendidos nas últimas décadas pelas entidades reguladoras e da saúde, visando práticas de jogo mais seguras e menos lesivas. Um vasto consenso em torno da promoção de estratégias de jogo responsável é atualmente aceite, não obstante a implementação de políticas neste domínio seja pouco sistematizada e não se traduza, frequentemente e de modo evidente, em práticas validadas de promoção do jogo responsável e de prevenção da morbilidade associada. Este artigo tem como objetivo uma revisão teórica e dos achados da investigação científica que dão suporte à necessidade de investimento no campo do jogo responsável, propondo recomendações que subsidiem o desenvolvimento de políticas estratégicas que priorizem a minimização de danos e a prevenção dos problemas de jogo. Foi desenvolvida uma revisão da literatura através de uma procura intensiva de conteúdos publicados nas bases de dados internacionais e por meio de contactos colaborativos com investigadores no domínio dos comportamentos aditivos sem substância. Foram selecionados artigos científicos e documentos conformadores produzidos por entidades científicas e governamentais, relacionados com prevenção e redução de riscos e minimização de danos dos problemas de jogo, publicados entre 1998 e 2018. Vários instrumentos no domínio do jogo responsável são identificados como boas práticas e devidamente baseados na evidência, sendo necessária a continuidade da sua implementação bem como a sua replicação noutros contextos.     syn-Selective Michael reaction of α-branched aryl acetaldehydes with nitroolefins promoted by squaric amino acid derived bifunctional Brønsted bases

    [EN] Here we describe a direct access to 2,2,3-trisubstituted syn γ-nitroaldehydes by addition of α-branched aryl acetaldehydes to nitroolefins promoted by a cinchona based squaric acid-derived amino acid peptide. Different α-methyl arylacetaldehydes react with β-aromatic and β-alkyl nitroolefins to afford the Michael adducts in high enantioselectivity and syn-selectivity. NMR experiments and DFT calculations predict the reaction to occur through the intermediacy of E-enolate. The interaction between the substrates and the catalyst follows Pápai’s model, wherein an intramolecular H-bond interaction in the catalyst between the NH group of one of the tert-leucines and the squaramide oxygen seems to be key for discrimination of the corresponding reaction transition states.Support has been provided by the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU (UFI QOSYC 11/22), Basque Government (GV grant IT1236-19), and Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (grant PID2019-109633GB-C21), Spain.
