    A bee in the corridor: regulating the optic flow on one side

    International audienceTo work out the information flow underlying the honeybee's anti-collision system, we performed a frame-by-frame analysis of the trajectories of individual bees (Apis Mellifera) flying in a wide outdoor flight tunnel. Forward speed Vx and distance D to one of the two walls happen to be proportional to each other, attesting that the angular velocity Vx/D (Optic Flow, OF) of the image of that same wall is held constant. Like the landing bee holding the downward OF constant (Srinivasan et al. 1996), the bee holds either the left or right OF constant. The bee's behaviour is well accounted for by a lateral optic flow regulator scheme. Simulations showed that this scheme can make a (fully actuated) hovercraft automatically adjust its distance to a wall by regulating the OF on one side (Serres et al., IEEE Biorob 2006)

    Comparative genetic analysis of quantitative traits in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)

    One hundred and fifty F2–F3 families from a cross between two inbred sunflower lines FU and PAZ2 were used to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) for resistance to white rot (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum) attacks of terminal buds and capitula, and black stem (Phoma macdonaldii). A genetic linkage map of 18 linkage groups with 216 molecular markers spanning 1,937 cM was constructed. Disease resistances were measured in field experiments for S. sclerotiorum and under controlled conditions for P. macdonaldii. For resistance to S. sclerotiorum terminal bud attack, seven QTL were identified, each explaining less than 10% of phenotypic variance. For capitulum attack by this parasite, there were four QTL (each explaining up to 20% of variation) and for P. macdonaldii resistance, four QTL were identified, each having effects of up to 16%. The S. sclerotiorum capitulum resistance QTL were compared with those reported previously and it was concluded that resistance to this disease is governed by a considerable number of QTL, located on almost all the sunflower linkage groups

    Status and new operation modes of the versatile VLT/NACO

    This paper aims at giving an update on the most versatile adaptive optics fed instrument to date, the well known and successful NACO . Although NACO is only scheduled for about two more years at the Very Large Telescope (VLT), it keeps on evolving with additional operation modes bringing original astronomical results. The high contrast imaging community uses it creatively as a test-bench for SPHERE and other second generation planet imagers. A new visible wavefront sensor (WFS) optimized for Laser Guide Star (LGS) operations has been installed and tested, the cube mode is more and more requested for frame selection on bright sources, a seeing enhancer mode (no tip/tilt correction) is now offered to provide full sky coverage and welcome all kind of extragalactic applications, etc. The Instrument Operations Team (IOT) and Paranal engineers are currently working hard at maintaining the instrument overall performances but also at improving them and offering new capabilities, providing the community with a well tuned and original instrument for the remaining time it is being used.     Tunable synthesis of Prussian Blue in exponentially growing polyelectrolyte multilayer films.

    Polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) films have become very popular for surface functionalization and the design of functional architectures such as hollow polyelectrolyte capsules. It is known that properties such as permeability to small ionic solutes are strongly dependent on the buildup regime of the PEM films. This permeability can be modified by tuning the ionization degree of the polycations or polyanions, provided the film is made from weak polyelectrolytes. In most previous investigations, this was achieved by playing on the solution pH either during the film buildup or by a postbuildup pH modification. Herein we investigate the functionalization of poly(allylamine hydrochloride)/poly(glutamic acid) (PAH/PGA) multilayers by ferrocyanide and Prussian Blue (PB). We demonstrate that dynamic exchange processes between the film and polyelectrolyte solutions containing one of the component polyelectrolyte allow one to modify its Donnan potential and, as a consequence, the amount of ferrocyanide anions able to be retained in the PAH/PGA film. This ability of the film to be a tunable reservoir of ferrocyanide anions is then used to produce a composite film containing PB particles obtained by a single precipitation reaction with a solution containing Fe(3+) cations in contact with the film.     Performance Evaluation of Multiple Cloud Data Centers Allocations for HPC

    This paper evaluates the behavior of the Microsoft Azure G5 cloud instance type over multiple Data Centers. The purpose is to identify if there are major differences between them and to help the users choose the best option for their needs. Our results show that there are differences in the network level for the same instance type in different locations and inside the same location at different times.     Synergetic effects of collisions, turbulence and sawtooth crashes on impurity transport

    This paper investigates the interplay of neoclassical, turbulent and MHD processes, which are simultaneously at play when contributing to impurity transport. It is shown that these contributions are not additive, as assumed sometimes. The interaction between turbulence and neoclassical effects leads to less effective thermal screening, i.e. lowers the outward flux due to temperature gradient. This behavior is attributed to poloidal asymmetries of the flow driven by turbulence. Moreover sawtooth crashes play an important role to determine fluxes across the q = 1 surface. It is found that the density profile of a heavy impurity differs significantly in sawtoothing plasmas from the one predicted by neoclassical theory when neglecting MHD events. Sawtooth crashes impede impurity accumulation, but also weaken the impurity outflux due to the temperature gradient when the latter is dominant

    Variants of a genomic island in Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida link isolates with their geographical origins

    Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida is a fish pathogen. Analysis of its genomic characteristics is required to determine the worldwide distribution of the various populations of this bacterium. Genomic alignments between the 01-B526 pathogenic strain and the A449 reference strain have revealed a 51-kb chromosomal insertion in 01-B526. This insertion (AsaGEI1a) has been identified as a new genomic island (GEI) bearing prophage genes. PCR assays were used to detect this GEI in a collection of 139 A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida isolates. Three forms of this GEI (AsaGEI1a, AsaGEI1b, AsaGEI2a) are now known based on this analysis and the sequencing of the genomes of seven additional isolates. A new prophage (prophage 3) associated with AsaGEI2a was also discovered. Each GEI appeared to be strongly associated with a specific geographic region. AsaGEI1a and AsaGEI2a were exclusively found in North American isolates, except for one European isolate bearing AsaGEI2a. The majority of the isolates bearing AsaGEI1b or no GEI were from Europe. Prophage 3 has also a particular geographic distribution and was found only in North American isolates.     Cell-Free DNA Genomic Profiling and Its Clinical Implementation in Advanced Prostate Cancer.

    Most men with prostate cancer (PCa), despite potentially curable localized disease at initial diagnosis, progress to metastatic disease. Despite numerous treatment options, choosing the optimal treatment for individual patients remains challenging. Biomarkers guiding treatment sequences in an advanced setting are lacking. To estimate the diagnostic potential of liquid biopsies in guiding personalized treatment of PCa, we evaluated the utility of a custom-targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) panel based on the AmpliSeq HD Technology. Ultra-deep sequencing on plasma circulating free DNA (cfDNA) samples of 40 metastatic castration-resistant PCa (mCRPC) and 28 metastatic hormone-naive PCa (mCSPC) was performed. CfDNA somatic mutations were detected in 48/68 (71%) patients. Of those 68 patients, 42 had matched tumor and cfDNA samples. In 21/42 (50%) patients, mutations from the primary tumor tissue were detected in the plasma cfDNA. In 7/42 (17%) patients, mutations found in the primary tumor were not detected in the cfDNA. Mutations from primary tumors were detected in all tested mCRPC patients (17/17), but only in 4/11 with mCSPC. AR amplifications were detected in 12/39 (31%) mCRPC patients. These results indicate that our targeted NGS approach has high sensitivity and specificity for detecting clinically relevant mutations in PCa

    Crossover between Rayleigh-Taylor Instability and turbulent cascading atomization mechanism in the bag-breakup regime

    The question whether liquid atomization (or pulverization) resorts to instability dynamics (through refinements of Rayleigh-Plateau, Rayleigh-Taylor or Kelvin-Helmholtz mechanism) or to turbulent cascades similar to Richardson and Kolmogorov first ideas seems to be still open. In this paper, we report experimental evidences that both mechanisms are needed to explain the spray drop PDF obtained from an industrial nozzle. Instability of Rayleigh-Taylor kind governs the size of the largest droplets while the smallest ones obey a PDF given by a turbulent cascading mechanism resulting in a log-L\'evy stable law of stability parameter close to 1.68. This value, very close to the inverse of the Flory exponent, can be related to a recent model for intermittency modeling stemming from self-avoiding random vortex stretching.Comment: new alpha version (precedent was a draft

    The synthesis and characterization of a set of redox-active iron and ruthenium alkynyl complexes of general formula [[M]­Cl<sub>(1–<i>p</i>)</sub>{Cî—ŒCC<sub>6</sub>H<sub>5–<i>m</i></sub>(Cî—ŒCFlu)<sub><i>m</i></sub>}<sub>(1+<i>p</i>)</sub>]­[PF<sub>6</sub>]<sub><i>n</i></sub> are reported (<i>n</i> = 0–1; <i>m</i> = 1–2; [M] = [Fe­(η<sup>5</sup>-C<sub>5</sub>Me<sub>5</sub>)­(Îș<sup>2</sup>-dppe)] and <i>p</i> = 1 or [M] = [<i>trans</i>-Ru­(Îș<sup>2</sup>-dppe)<sub>2</sub>] and <i>p</i> = 0–1). The linear and third-order nonlinear optical properties of these new organometallic complexes featuring phenylalkynyl ligands functionalized by 2-fluorenyl (Flu) groups were studied in their stable redox states. Their first electronic transitions are assigned with the help of DFT calculations. We show here that these compounds possess significant third-order NLO responses in the near-IR range for molecules of their size. In particular, the remarkably large 2PA activities of the new Ru­(II) compounds in the 600–800 nm range (<i>Z</i>-scan) make them attractive nonlinear chromophores. Structure–property studies emphasize the importance of para- versus meta-connection of the 2-fluorenylethynyl units on the phenylalkynyl core and reveal that upon progressing from mono- to bis-alkynyl complexes a further increase of the 2PA cross section can be obtained while maintaining linear transparency in the visible range
