Lacrimal equilibration time (LET): Clinical application in the assessment of dry eye
This study investigates the Lacrimal Equilibration Time (LET) test, a procedure proposed in 1994 by Lavaux and Keller to aid in the diagnosis of dry eye. The test evaluates the time required for a patient to regain his or her habitual monocular distance visual acuity after the instillation of a Celluvisc lubricating drop. In this study, the LET test is compared to rose bengal staining and to a dry eye patient questionnaire. No statistically significant relationship was found between any of these variables for the 58 subjects. In addition, the LET test was found to be highly variable within subjects

Linking metacognition and mindreading: Evidence from autism and dual-task investigations
Questions of how we know our own and other minds, and whether metacognition and mindreading rely on the same processes, are longstanding in psychology and philosophy. In Experiment 1, children/adolescents with autism (who tend to show attenuated mindreading) showed significantly lower accuracy on an explicit metacognition task than neurotypical children/adolescents, but not on an allegedly metacognitive implicit one. In Experiment 2, neurotypical adults completed these tasks in a single-task condition, or a dual-task condition that required concurrent completion of a secondary task that tapped mindreading. Metacognitive accuracy was significantly diminished by the dual-mindreading-task on the explicit task, but not the implicit task. In Experiment 3, we included additional dual-tasks to rule out the possibility that any secondary task (regardless of whether it required mindreading) would diminish metacognitive accuracy. Finally, in both experiments 1 and 2, metacognitive accuracy on the explicit task, but not the implicit task, was associated significantly with performance on a measure of mindreading ability. These results suggest that explicit metacognitive tasks (used frequently to measure metacognition in humans) share metarepresentational processing resources with mindreading, whereas implicit tasks (which are claimed by some comparative psychologists to measure metacognition in non-human animals) do not

This remarkable adaptation was studied extensively by Charles Darwin and he termed this rapid response sensitiveness. The epidemiology of the first wave of H1N1 influenza pandemic in Australia : a population-based study
Objectives: Following the recent H1N1 influenza pandemic we were able to describe seropositivity in a repre-sentative sample of adults prior to the availability of a specific vaccine.Methods: This cross-sectional serological study is set in the Barwon Statistical Division, Australia. Blood samples were collected from September 2009 through to May 2010, from 1184 individuals (569 men, 615 women; median age 61.7 years), randomly selected from electoral rolls. Serum was analysed for specific H1N1 immunity using a haemagglutina-tion inhibition test. A self-report provided information about symptoms, demographics and healthcare. Associations be-tween H1N1 infection, gender, households and occupation were determined using logistic regression, adjusting for age.Results: Of 1184 individuals, 129 (58 men, 71 women) were seropositive. Gender-adjusted age-specific prevalence was: 8.3% 20-29 years, 13.5% 30-39, 10.4% 40-49, 6.5% 50-59, 9.7% 60-69, 10.3% 70-79, 18.8% 80+. Standardised preva-lence was 10.3% (95%CI 9.6-11.0). No associations were detected between seropositivity and gender (OR=0.82, 95%CI 0.57-1.19) or being a healthcare worker (OR=1.43, 95%CI 0.62-3.29). Smokers (OR=1.86, 95%CI 1.09-3.15) and those socioeconomically disadvantaged (OR=2.52, 95%CI 1.24-5.13) were at increased risk. Among 129 seropositive individu-als, 31 reported symptoms that were either mild (n = 13) or moderate (time off work, doctor visit, n = 18). For age <60, 39.6% of seropositive individuals reported symptoms, whereas the proportion was 13.2% for age 60+.Conclusions: Following the pandemic, the proportion of seropositive adults was low, but significant subclinical infection was found. Social disadvantage increased the likelihood of infection. The low symptom rate for older ages may relate to pre-existing immunity.<br /
Revealing the role of electrons and phonons in the ultrafast recovery of charge density wave correlations in 1-TiSe
Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with selective
near- and mid-infrared photon excitations, we investigate the femtosecond
dynamics of the charge density wave (CDW) phase in 1-TiSe, as well as
the dynamics of CDW fluctuations at 240 K. In the CDW phase, we observe the
coherent oscillation of the CDW amplitude mode. At 240 K, we single out an
ultrafast component in the recovery of the CDW correlations, which we explain
as the manifestation of electron-hole correlations. Our momentum-resolved study
of femtosecond electron dynamics supports a mechanism for the CDW phase
resulting from the cooperation between the interband Coulomb interaction, the
mechanism of excitonic insulator phase formation, and electron-phonon coupling.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
Using System Dynamics Modelling Approach to Develop Management Tools for Animal Production with Emphasis on Small Ruminants
Small ruminants are important assets in several regions of the world. They account for more than half of the domesticated ruminants. Despite the growth in goat production in the world (more than 2% per year), research related to goat production is less than desired. One underused but potentially valuable approach for research on small ruminants is simulation modelling. Models of the components of small ruminant systems can enhance the financial returns and reduce negative environmental impacts. These models can be used to assess many dimensions of small ruminant production, from rumen dynamics to economic policies designed to support small ruminant production. Understanding the nutrition, production, and economic policy feedback signals and planning ahead is crucial to build a robust and integrated production activity that can be managed under different production scenarios. System Dynamics (SD) is a computer-aided modelling methodology that can be used to perform policy analysis and decision support system (DSS) applied to dynamic problems arising in complex social, managerial, economic, or ecological dynamic systems characterized by interdependence, mutual interaction, information feedback, and circular causality. SD can be used as a modelling tool to aggregate knowledge to solve different types of problems that have a limited scope to a specific location or have broad trends of applications across locations and areas of science. Important issues of broad application include the bearings of animal production in the climate change and the impacts of climate change in animal production, alternative production scenarios of animal and crop integration, associations between animal production and business (economics, marketing). The trend of increasing small ruminants in tropical and subtropical regions and an increasing pressure on tropical and subtropical livestock systems to produce food, to feed livestock, and to produce energy crops warrants the development of DSS to address issues such as what is the “real” benefits of livestock, the negative impacts livestock can have on greenhouse-gas emissions and the environment, and the effects of climate change on livestock systems
Co-Administration of Low-Dose Naltrexone and Bupropion Reduces Alcohol Drinking in Alcohol-Preferring (P) Rats
Background
This study examined whether combining naltrexone (NTX) with bupropion (BUP) is more effective in reducing alcohol drinking in alcohol-preferring (P) rats with a genetic predisposition toward high voluntary alcohol intake than either drug alone.
Methods
Alcohol-experienced, adult, male, P rats were fed NTX alone in a dose of 10.0 mg/kg BW, BUP alone in a dose of 10.0 mg/kg BW, BUP alone in a dose of 20.0 mg/kg BW, NTX (10.0 mg/kg BW) + BUP (10.0 mg/kg BW), or vehicle (VEH) at 1 hour prior to onset of a daily 2-hour alcohol access period for 5 consecutive days.
Results
When administered alone, neither NTX (10.0 mg/kg BW) nor BUP, in either of 2 doses (10.0 mg/kg BW or 20.0 mg/kg BW), reduced voluntary alcohol intake in P rats. However, NTX combined with BUP (10.0 mg/kg NTX + 10.0 mg/kg BUP) and given as a single medication significantly reduced alcohol consumption throughout prolonged treatment.
Conclusions
Combining low doses of NTX and BUP, each of which is ineffective when given alone, increases the efficacy of the medication. Low drug doses circumvent the problem of negative side effects that can occur with higher doses of either drug. A reduction in side effects can facilitate patient compliance and improve clinical outcomes for alcoholics and heavy drinkers who want to reduce their alcohol intake. The results, together with those from our prior studies, demonstrate the strength of a combinatorial pharmacotherapeutic approach to the treatment of alcohol use disorder
Titan's atmosphere as observed by Cassini/VIMS solar occultations: CH, CO and evidence for CH absorption
We present an analysis of the VIMS solar occultations dataset, which allows
us to extract vertically resolved information on the characteristics of Titan's
atmosphere between 100-700 km with a characteristic vertical resolution of 10
km. After a series of data treatment procedures, 4 occultations out of 10 are
retained. This sample covers different seasons and latitudes of Titan. The
transmittances show clearly the evolution of the haze and detect the detached
layer at 310 km in Sept. 2011 at mid-northern latitudes. Through the inversion
of the transmission spectra with a line-by-line radiative transfer code we
retrieve the vertical distribution of CH and CO mixing ratio. The two
methane bands at 1.4 and 1.7 {\mu}m are always in good agreement and yield an
average stratospheric abundance of %. This is significantly less
than the value of 1.48% obtained by the GCMS/Huygens instrument. The analysis
of the residual spectra after the inversion shows that there are additional
absorptions which affect a great part of the VIMS wavelength range. We
attribute many of these additional bands to gaseous ethane, whose near-infrared
spectrum is not well modeled yet. Ethane contributes significantly to the
strong absorption between 3.2-3.5 {\mu}m that was previously attributed only to
C-H stretching bands from aerosols. Ethane bands may affect the surface windows
too, especially at 2.7 {\mu}m. Other residual bands are generated by stretching
modes of C-H, C-C and C-N bonds. In addition to the C-H stretch from aliphatic
hydrocarbons at 3.4 {\mu}m, we detect a strong and narrow absorption at 3.28
{\mu}m which we tentatively attribute to the presence of PAHs in the
stratosphere. C-C and C-N stretching bands are possibly present between 4.3-4.5
{\mu}m. Finally, we obtain the CO mixing ratio between 70-170 km. The average
result of ppm is in good agreement with previous studies.Comment: 51 pages, 28 figure
Constraints on small-scale cosmological perturbations from gamma-ray searches for dark matter
Events like inflation or phase transitions can produce large density
perturbations on very small scales in the early Universe. Probes of small
scales are therefore useful for e.g. discriminating between inflationary
models. Until recently, the only such constraint came from non-observation of
primordial black holes (PBHs), associated with the largest perturbations.
Moderate-amplitude perturbations can collapse shortly after matter-radiation
equality to form ultracompact minihalos (UCMHs) of dark matter, in far greater
abundance than PBHs. If dark matter self-annihilates, UCMHs become excellent
targets for indirect detection. Here we discuss the gamma-ray fluxes expected
from UCMHs, the prospects of observing them with gamma-ray telescopes, and
limits upon the primordial power spectrum derived from their non-observation by
