    Learning Active Basis Models by EM-Type Algorithms

    EM algorithm is a convenient tool for maximum likelihood model fitting when the data are incomplete or when there are latent variables or hidden states. In this review article we explain that EM algorithm is a natural computational scheme for learning image templates of object categories where the learning is not fully supervised. We represent an image template by an active basis model, which is a linear composition of a selected set of localized, elongated and oriented wavelet elements that are allowed to slightly perturb their locations and orientations to account for the deformations of object shapes. The model can be easily learned when the objects in the training images are of the same pose, and appear at the same location and scale. This is often called supervised learning. In the situation where the objects may appear at different unknown locations, orientations and scales in the training images, we have to incorporate the unknown locations, orientations and scales as latent variables into the image generation process, and learn the template by EM-type algorithms. The E-step imputes the unknown locations, orientations and scales based on the currently learned template. This step can be considered self-supervision, which involves using the current template to recognize the objects in the training images. The M-step then relearns the template based on the imputed locations, orientations and scales, and this is essentially the same as supervised learning. So the EM learning process iterates between recognition and supervised learning.     Mind-Body Practice Changes Fractional Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuations in Intrinsic Control Networks

    Cognitive control impairment is a typical symptom largely reported in populations with neurological disorders. Previous studies have provided evidence about the changes in cognitive control induced by mind-body training. However, the neural correlates underlying the effect of extensive mind-body practice on cognitive control remain largely unknown. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, we characterized dynamic fluctuations in large-scale intrinsic connectivity networks associated with mind-body practice, and examined their differences between healthy controls and Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) practitioners. Compared with a control group, the TCC group revealed significantly decreased fractional Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuations (fALFF) in the bilateral frontoparietal network, default mode network and dorsal prefrontal-angular gyri network. Furthermore, we detected a significant association between mind-body practice experience and fALFF in the default mode network, as well as an association between cognitive control performance and fALFF of the frontoparietal network. This provides the first evidence of large-scale functional connectivity in brain networks associated with mind-body practice, shedding light on the neural network changes that accompany intensive mind-body training. It also highlights the functionally plastic role of the frontoparietal network in the context of the “immune system” of mental health recently developed in relation to flexible hub theory

    The title compound, C32H28N6O4·2C2H5OH, consists of two 2-(propyl­amino)­benzofuro[3,2-d]pyrimidin-4(3H)-one units connected, via one of the pyrimidine N atoms, to a bridging benzene ring in the 1,4 positions. Two ethanol solvent mol­ecules are also present. The main mol­ecule lies on a center of symmetry located at the center of the benzene ring. The fused-ring system of the benzofuro[3,2-d]pyrimidine moiety is nearly planar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.016 Å) and forms a dihedral angle of 78.21 (7)° with the central benzene ring. The crystal structure features O—H⋯O and N—H⋯O inter­actions. The C atoms of the propyl­amino side chain in the main mol­ecule and the ethyl group in the solvent mol­ecule are disordered over two positions, with site-occupancy factors 0.34:0.66 and 0.42:0.58, respectively

Uncertainties in the initial parton production and their effects on later parton equilibration are considered.     Enhanced electrical and optical properties of room temperature deposited Aluminium doped Zinc Oxide (AZO) thin films by excimer laser annealing

    High quality transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) often require a high thermal budget fabrication process. In this study, Excimer Laser Annealing (ELA) at a wavelength of 248 nm has been explored as a processing mechanism to facilitate low thermal budget fabrication of high quality aluminium doped zinc oxide (AZO) thin films. 180 nm thick AZO films were prepared by radio frequency magnetron sputtering at room temperature on fused silica substrates. The effects of the applied RF power and the sputtering pressure on the outcome of ELA at different laser energy densities and number of pulses have been investigated. AZO films deposited with no intentional heating at 180 W, and at 2 mTorr of 0.2% oxygen in argon were selected as the optimum as-deposited films in this work, with a resistivity of 1×10−3 Ω.cm, and an average visible transmission of 85%. ELA was found to result in noticeably reduced resistivity of 5×10−4 Ω.cm, and enhancing the average visible transmission to 90% when AZO is processed with 5 pulses at 125 mJ/cm2. Therefore, the combination of RF magnetron sputtering and ELA, both low thermal budget and scalable techniques, can provide a viable fabrication route of high quality AZO films for use as transparent electrodes

    The association between comorbidities and the quality of life among colorectal cancer survivors in the People's Republic of China

    BACKGROUND: Cancer survivors with certain comorbidities had lower quality of life (QOL). This study was performed to investigate the prevalence of comorbidities and the association between comorbidities and the QOL among Chinese colorectal cancer survivors (CCS). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,398 CCS between April and July 2013 in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China. All the participants were asked to complete a simplified Chinese version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment quality of life version 3 questionnaire and questions on sociodemographic characteristics and comorbidities. In order to mitigate the bias caused by confounding factors, multiple linear regression models were employed to calculate the adjusted means of QOL scores. RESULTS: The proportion of participants without any comorbidity was only 20.2%. The CCS with comorbidities except hypertension scored significantly lower on the European Organization for Research and Treatment quality of life version 3 questionnaire global health and functioning scales and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General scales but higher on the European Organization for Research and Treatment quality of life version 3 questionnaire symptom scores, indicating that they had poorer QOL, particularly for cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, and musculoskeletal diseases. CONCLUSION: There exists a significant association between comorbidities and QOL among Chinese CCS, and participants with comorbidities generally reported lower QOL scores. These findings suggested comprehensive care for CCS

    Hereditary spastic paraplegia (SPG 48) with deafness and azoospermia: A case report

    Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSP) are inherited neurodegenerative disorders characterized by progressive paraplegia and spasticity in the lower limbs. SPG48 represents a rare genotype characterized by mutations in AP5Z1, a gene playing a role in intracellular membrane trafficking. This study describes a case of a 53-year-old male patient with SPG48 presenting spastic paraplegia, infertility, hearing impairment, cognitive abnormalities and peripheral neuropathy. The Sanger sequencing revealed a homozygous deletion in the chr 7:4785904-4786677 region causing a premature stop codon in exon 10. The patient's brother was heterozygous for the mutation. The brain magnetic resonance imaging found a mild brain atrophy and white matter lesions. In the analysis of the auditory thresholds, we found a significant hearing decrease in both ears

    Differential analysis of aqueous humor cytokine levels in patients with macular edema secondary to diabetic retinopathy or retinal vein occlusion

    AIM: To evaluate the difference and the correlation between the concentrations of cytokines in the aqueous humor of eyes with macular edema secondary to diabetic retinopathy (DR) or retinal vein occlusion (RVO). METHODS: This is a retrospective case control study. The aqueous humor samples were collected during intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) for patients diagnosed with macular edema secondary to DR (DME) or RVO (RVO-ME) at Xijing Hospital from August 2021 to July 2022. Meanwhile, aqueous humor samples during vitrectomy from patients with idiopathic macular hole (IMH) were also collected and served as controls. The aqueous humor concentrations of VEGF, platelet-derived factor (PDGF), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, IL-18, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) were measured with Human Premixed Multi-Analyte Kit (Luminex). The difference of the aqueous cytokines and the correlation between the two diseases were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 40 eyes of 38 patients were enrolled in the study, including 13 eyes of 11 DME patients (DME group), 16 eyes of 16 RVO-ME patients (RVO-ME group) and 11 eyes of 11 IMH patients (control group). The VEGF, PDGF, IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1 levels of the aqueous humor were higher in both DME and RVO-ME groups compared with the control group (all P<0.05), the levels of TNF-α was higher in the DME group than in the control group (P<0.05). The VEGF, IL-6, MCP-1, and TNF-α levels in the aqueous humor were significantly higher in the DR group than those in the RVO group (all P<0.05). Correlation analyses revealed that there were complex positive correlations between IL-6, IL-8, IL-18, MCP-1, and TNF-α levels in the aqueous humor of eyes with two diseases. CONCLUSION: Although ischemic and inflammatory factors are similarly involved in the pathogenesis of DME and RVO-ME, the roles of these factors are more significant or more likely to be activated in DR patients, suggesting different treatment strategies should be considered for the two diseases
