We observe an empirical relationship between (220Rn/222Rn) and CO2 efflux. The higher the flux of CO2, the lower the ratio between 220Rn and 222Rn. Deep sources of gas are characterized by high 222Rn activity and high CO2 efflux, whereas shallow sources are indicated by high 220Rn activity and relatively low CO2 efflux. Excess 220Rn highlights sites of ongoing shallow rock fracturing that could be affected by collapse, as in the case of the rim of an active vent. Depletion both in 220Rn and in CO2 seems to be representative of residual degassing along recently active eruptive vents. This work was funded by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (S.G., M.N.) and by the Dipartimento per la Protezione Civile (Italy), projects V3_6/28-Etna (M.N.) and V5/08-Diffuse degassing in Italy (S.G.), and NSF EAR 063824101 (K.W.W.S.)

Gemini: Engaging Experiential and Feature Scales Through Multimaterial Digital Design and Hybrid Additive–Subtractive Fabrication

Gemini is a chaise lounge constructed using hybrid fabrication involving 3D printing of a textured polymeric skin combined with CNC milling of a wooden chassis. The texture of the chaise was inspired by the seed geometry of the Ornithogalum dubium flower and designed using a computational implementation of an inhomogeneous Poisson process. The 3D-printed texture was informed by the weight distribution of a person with the goal of delivering structural support and comfort on the one hand and maximizing the absorption of sound emanating from exterior sources of noise on the other. Gemini is the first functional object produced using the Stratasys Objet500 Connex3 color multimaterial 3D printer including the Tango+ soft material. It represents one of the first cases of a hybrid additive–subtractive manufacturing approach, which combines the strength of both of these techniques

Interferometric Observations of Powerful CO Emission from the three Submillimeter Galaxies at z=2.30, 2.51 and 3.35

We report IRAM Plateau de Bure, millimeter interferometry of three z=~2.4 to 3.4, SCUBA deep field galaxies. Our CO line observations confirm the rest-frame UV/optical redshifts, thus more than doubling the number of confirmed, published redshifts of the faint submillimeter population and proving their high-z nature. In all three sources our measurements of the intrinsic gas and dynamical mass are large (1e10 to 1e11 Msun). In at least two cases the data show that the submillimeter sources are part of an interacting system. Together with recent information gathered in the X-ray, optical and radio bands our observations support the interpretation that the submm-population consists of gas rich (gas to dynamical mass ratio ~0.5) and massive, composite starburst/AGN systems, which are undergoing a major burst of star formation and are evolving into m*-galaxies.Comment: only minor modifications to comply with the ApJL edition rule

Multiple Molecular H2 Outflows in AFGL 618

We report high spatial (0.5 arcsec) and high spectral (9 km/s) resolution spectro-imaging of the 2.12 micron H2 1-0 S(1) line in the proto-planetary nebula AFGL 618 using BEAR at the CFHT. The observations reveal the presence of multiple, high-velocity, molecular outflows that align with the remarkable optical jets seen in HST images. The structure and kinematics of the outflows show how jets interact with circumstellar gas and shape the environment in which planetary nebulae form.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures. Electrical networks on nn-simplex fractals

The decimation map D\mathcal{D} for a network of admittances on an nn-simplex lattice fractal is studied. The asymptotic behaviour of D\mathcal{D} for large-size fractals is examined. It is found that in the vicinity of the isotropic point the eigenspaces of the linearized map are always three for n≄4n \geq 4; they are given a characterization in terms of graph theory. A new anisotropy exponent, related to the third eigenspace, is found, with a value crossing over from ln⁥[(n+2)/3]/ln⁥2\ln[(n+2)/3]/\ln 2 to ln⁥[(n+2)3/n(n+1)2]/ln⁥2\ln[(n+2)^3/n(n+1)^2]/\ln 2.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure

The phase diagram of L\'evy spin glasses

We study the L\'evy spin-glass model with the replica and the cavity method. In this model each spin interacts through a finite number of strong bonds and an infinite number of weak bonds. This hybrid behaviour of L\'evy spin glasses becomes transparent in our solution: the local field contains a part propagating along a backbone of strong bonds and a Gaussian noise term due to weak bonds. Our method allows to determine the complete replica symmetric phase diagram, the replica symmetry breaking line and the entropy. The results are compared with simulations and previous calculations using a Gaussian ansatz for the distribution of fields.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure

    A matrix-valued point interactions model

We study a matrix-valued Schr\"odinger operator with random point interactions. We prove the absence of absolutely continuous spectrum for this operator by proving that away from a discrete set its Lyapunov exponents do not vanish. For this we use a criterion by Gol'dsheid and Margulis and we prove the Zariski denseness, in the symplectic group, of the group generated by the transfer matrices. Then we prove estimates on the transfer matrices which lead to the H\"older continuity of the Lyapunov exponents. After proving the existence of the integrated density of states of the operator, we also prove its H\"older continuity by proving a Thouless formula which links the integrated density of states to the sum of the positive Lyapunov exponents

Comparison of two methods of processing induced sputum: selected versus entire sputum.

Abstract Sputum analysis is increasingly used to assess airway inflammation in asthma. The analysis of sputum is currently performed with two techniques, i.e., analysis of selected sputum (plugs) and analysis of entire sputum. To investigate the diagnostic value of these two methods, we compared total and differential cell counts and supernatant eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) in selected and entire sputum collected on two occasions in a group of healthy and asthmatic subjects. We induced sputum with hypertonic saline in 18 asthmatics and in eight healthy subjects. On one occasion we analyzed selected sputum, and on another occasion we analyzed entire sputum. In each sample we measured total and differential cell counts and ECP concentration in supernatant. We found a higher percentage of eosinophils (15.3 versus 8.3%; p < 0.01), more viable nonsquamous cells (80.6 versus 71.8%; p < 0.01), and higher levels of ECP (548 versus 105 microg/L; p < 0.001) in selected sputum as compared with entire sputum, whereas the percentage of neutrophils was higher in the entire sputum (42.7 versus 33.3%; p < 0.05). The percentage of eosinophils and ECP concentration were significantly and similarly increased in both selected and entire sputum of asthmatic subjects, i.e., independent of the method of sputum analysis. In conclusion, the selected sputum method may indeed provide more viable cells, more eosinophils, and a higher concentration of ECP. However, both the selected sputum and the entire sputum method have the same diagnostic value in distinguishing asthmatics from healthy subjects
