    Differentiable WORLD Synthesizer-based Neural Vocoder With Application To End-To-End Audio Style Transfer

    In this paper, we propose a differentiable WORLD synthesizer and demonstrate its use in end-to-end audio style transfer tasks such as (singing) voice conversion and the DDSP timbre transfer task. Accordingly, our baseline differentiable synthesizer has no model parameters, yet it yields adequate synthesis quality. We can extend the baseline synthesizer by appending lightweight black-box postnets which apply further processing to the baseline output in order to improve fidelity. An alternative differentiable approach considers extraction of the source excitation spectrum directly, which can improve naturalness albeit for a narrower class of style transfer applications. The acoustic feature parameterization used by our approaches has the added benefit that it naturally disentangles pitch and timbral information so that they can be modeled separately. Moreover, as there exists a robust means of estimating these acoustic features from monophonic audio sources, it allows for parameter loss terms to be added to an end-to-end objective function, which can help convergence and/or further stabilize (adversarial) training.Comment: A revised version of this work has been accepted to the 154th AES Convention; 12 pages, 4 figure

    Application of the Delphi Method to Identify Risks in an Acute Healthcare Setting

    In efforts to mitigate risks and reduce incidences and medical legal claims, risk management programs in acute healthcare settings analyze historical data to determine root causes, improve care delivery processes and ultimately mitigate further harm. In order to maintain highly coordinated, strategic and systemic frameworks required to identify risks, risk management teams must fundamentally expand beyond grounded, compartmentalized and decentralized issues management. As a strategy to identify an applicable solution, this Major Research Project (MRP) trials foresight methods to identify risks in acute care settings. Using a foresight technique called horizon scanning, seventeen risks were identified to form a draft futures risk registry. A delphi study was conducted whereby the identified risks were rated upon by a panel of healthcare experts. Consensus was reached on eleven risks over two rounds of polling, which formed the 2025 futures risk registry; a registry that can be applicable to any comparable acute care hospital. The study concludes with three operational strategies to imbed the trailed foresight methods into routine hospital risk identification processes

    Immunolocalization of Kisspeptin Associated with Amyloid-β Deposits in the Pons of an Alzheimer's Disease Patient.

    The pons region of the Alzheimer’s disease (AD) brain is one of the last to show amyloid-ß (Aß) deposits and has been suggested to contain neuroprotective compounds. Kisspeptin (KP) is a hormone that activates the Hypothalamic-pituitary- gonadal axis and has been suggested to be neuroprotective against Aß toxicity. The localization of KP, plus the established endogenous neuroprotective compounds corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) and catalase, in tissue sections from the pons region of a male AD subject have been determined in relation to Aß deposits. Results showed Aß deposits also stained with KP, CRH and catalase antibodies. At high magnification the staining of deposits was either KP or catalase positive and there was only a limited area of the deposits with KP-catalase co-localization. The CRH does not bind Aß, whilst both KP and catalase can bind Aß, suggesting that co- localization in Aß deposits is not restricted to compounds that directly bind Aß. The neuroprotective actions of KP, CRH and catalase were confirmed in vitro and fibrillar Aß preparations were shown to stimulate the release of KP in vitro. In conclusion, neuroprotective KP, CRH and catalase all co-localize with Aß plaque-like deposits in the pons region from a male AD subject

    Unravelling anaerobic metabolisms in hypersaline sediment

    The knowledge on the microbial diversity inhabiting hypersaline sediments is still limited. In particular, existing data about anaerobic hypersaline archaea and bacteria are scarce and refer to a limited number of genera. The approach to obtain existing information has been almost exclusively attempting to grow every organism in axenic culture on the selected electron acceptor with a variety of electron donors. Here, a different approach has been used to interrogate the microbial community of submerged hypersaline sediment of Salitral Negro, Argentina, aiming at enriching consortia performing anaerobic respiration of different electron acceptor compounds, in which ecological associations can maximize the possibilities of successful growth. Growth of consortia was demonstrated on all offered electron acceptors, including fumarate, nitrate, sulfate, thiosulfate, dimethyl sulfoxide, and a polarized electrode. Halorubrum and Haloarcula representatives are here shown for the first time growing on lactate, using fumarate or a polarized electrode as the electron acceptor; in addition, they are shown also growing in sulfate-reducing consortia. Halorubrum representatives are for the first time shown to be growing in nitrate-reducing consortia, probably thanks to reduction of N2O produced by other consortium members. Fumarate respiration is indeed shown for the first time supporting growth of Halanaeroarchaeum and Halorhabdus belonging to the archaea, as well as growth of Halanaerobium, Halanaerobaculum, Sporohalobacter, and Acetohalobium belonging to the bacteria.     Coins of Armenian king Tigranes II the Great (95-55 BC), silver and copper-bronze tetradrachms and drachms, clearly reveal a star with a tail on the royal tiara which may be associated with the Halley's comet passage of 87 BC. If so, one has another case when astronomical events can be useful for historical chronological problems, this would be a far earlier record of Halley in Armenia than was previously known from chronicles and also one of the earliest known images of Halley's comet.Comment: The published version.     Presence of structural homologs of ubiquitin in haloalkaliphilic Archaea

    Ubiquitin, a protein widely conserved in eukaryotes, is involved in many cellular processes, including proteolysis. While sequences encoding ubiquitin-like proteins have not been identified in prokaryotic genomes sequenced so far, they have revealed the presence of structural and functional homologs of ubiquitin in Bacteria and Archaea. This work describes the amplification and proteomic analysis of a 400-bp DNA fragment from the haloalkaliphilic archaeon Natrialba magadii. The encoded polypeptide, P400, displayed structural homology to ubiquitin-like proteins such as those of the ThiS family and Urm1. Expression of the P400 DNA sequence in Escherichia coli cells yielded a recombinant polypeptide that reacted with anti-ubiquitin antibodies. In addition, a putative open reading frame encoding P400 was identified in the recently sequenced genome of N. magadii.     Toward Forecasting Volcanic Eruptions using Seismic Noise

    During inter-eruption periods, magma pressurization yields subtle changes of the elastic properties of volcanic edifices. We use the reproducibility properties of the ambient seismic noise recorded on the Piton de la Fournaise volcano to measure relative seismic velocity variations of less than 0.1 % with a temporal resolution of one day. Our results show that five studied volcanic eruptions were preceded by clearly detectable seismic velocity decreases within the zone of magma injection.     Distribution and kinematics of the HCN(3-2) emission down to the innermost region in the envelope of the O-rich star W Hya

    We report high angular resolution observations of the HCN (3-2) line emission in the circumstellar envelope of the O-rich star W Hya with the Submillimeter Array. The proximity of this star allows us to image its molecular envelope with a spatial resolution of just ~40 AU, corresponding to about 10 times the stellar diameter. We resolve the HCN (3-2) emission and find that it is centrally peaked and has a roughly spherically symmetrical distribution. This shows that HCN is formed in the innermost region of the envelope (within ~10 stellar radii), which is consistent with predictions from pulsation-driven shock chemistry models, and rules out the scenario in which HCN forms through photochemical reactions in the outer envelope. Our model suggests that the envelope decreases steeply in temperature and increases smoothly in velocity with radius, inconsistent with the standard model for mass-loss driven by radiative pressure on dust grains. We detect a velocity gradient of ~5 km/s in the NW--SE direction over the central 40 AU. This velocity gradient is reminescent of that seen in OH maser lines, and could be caused by the rotation of the envelope or by a weak bipolar outflow.Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ
