    Constraint-based Wavevector- and Frequency-dependent Exchange-Correlation Kernel of the Uniform Electron Gas

    According to time-dependent density functional theory, the exact exchange-correlation kernel fxc_{xc}(n, q, ω\omega) determines not only the ground-state energy but also the excited-state energies/lifetimes and time-dependent linear density response of an electron gas of uniform density n == 3/(4π\pirs3^3_s). Here we propose a parametrization of this function based upon the satisfaction of exact constraints. For the static (ω\omega = 0) limit, we modify the model of Constantin and Pitarke at small wavevector q to recover the known second-order gradient expansion, plus other changes. For all frequencies ω\omega at q == 0, we use the model of Gross, Kohn, and Iwamoto. A Cauchy integral extends this model to complex ω\omega and implies the standard Kramers-Kronig relations. A scaling relation permits closed forms for not only the imaginary but also the real part of fxc_{xc} for real ω\omega. We then combine these ingredients by damping out the ω\omega dependence at large q in the same way that the q dependence is damped. Away from q == 0 and ω\omega == 0, the correlation contribution to the kernel becomes dominant over exchange, even at rs_s == 4, the valence electron density of metallic sodium. The resulting correlation energy from integration over imaginary ω\omega is essentially exact. The plasmon pole of the density response function is found by analytic continuation of fxc_{xc} to ω\omega just below the real axis, and the resulting plasmon lifetime first decreases from infinity and then increases as q grows from 0 toward the electron-hole continuum. A static charge-density wave is found for rs_s >> 69, and shown to be associated with softening of the plasmon mode. The exchange-only version of our static kernel confirms Overhauser's 1968 prediction that correlation enhances the charge-density wave.Comment: 20 pages including 11 figure

    Graphene supported plasmonic photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution in photocatalytic water splitting

    It is well known that the noble metal nanoparticles show active absorption in the visible region because of the existence of the unique feature known as surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Here we report the effect of plasmonic Au nanoparticles on the enhancement of the renewable hydrogen (H2) evolution through photocatalytic water splitting. The plasmonic Au/graphene/TiO2 photocatalyst was synthesized in two steps: first the graphene/TiO2 nanocomposites were developed by the hydrothermal decomposition process; then the Au was loaded by photodeposition. The plasmonic Au and the graphene as co-catalyst effectively prolong the recombination of the photogenerated charges. This plasmonic photocatalyst displayed enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution for water splitting in the presence of methanol as a sacrificial reagent. The H2 evolution rate from the Au/graphene co-catalyst was about 9 times higher than that of a pure graphene catalyst. The optimal graphene content was found to be 1.0 wt %, giving a H2 evolution of 1.34 mmol (i.e., 26 μmolhˉ¹), which exceeded the value of 0.56 mmol (i.e., 112 μmolhˉ¹) observed in pure TiO2. This high photocatalytic H2 evolution activity results from the deposition of TiO2 on graphene sheets, which act as an electron acceptors to efficiently separate the photogenerated charge carriers. However, the Au loading enhanced the H2 evolution dramatically and achieved a maximum value of 12 mmol (i.e., 2.4 mmolhˉ¹) with optimal loading of 2.0 wt% Au on graphene/TiO2 composites. The enhancement of H2 evolution in the presence of Au results from the SPR effect induced by visible light irradiation, which boosts the energy intensity of the trapped electron as well as active sites for photocatalytic activity

    Assessment of concrete damage and strength degradation caused by reinforcement corrosion

    Structural performance deterioration of reinforced concrete structures has been extensively investigated, but very limited studies have been carried out to investigate the effect of reinforcement corrosion on time-dependent reliability with consideration of the influence of mechanical characteristics of the bond interface due to corrosion. This paper deals with how corrosion in reinforcement creates different types of defects in concrete structure and how they are responsible for the structural capacity deterioration of corrosion affected reinforced concrete structures during their service life. Cracking in cover concrete due to reinforcement corrosion is investigated by using rebar-concrete model and realistic concrete properties. The flexural strength deterioration is analytically predicted on the basis of bond strength evolution due to reinforcement corrosion, which is examined by the experimental data available. The time-dependent reliability analysis is undertaken to calculate the life time structural reliability of corrosion damaged concrete structures by stochastic deterioration modelling of reinforced concrete. The results from the numerical example show that the proposed approach is capable of evaluating the damage caused by reinforcement corrosion and also predicting the structural reliability of concrete structures during their lifecycle

    Utilisation of Postnatal Care among Rural Women in Nepal

    Background: Postnatal care is uncommon in Nepal, and where it is available the quality is often poor. Adequate utilisation of postnatal care can help reduce mortality and morbidity among mothers and their babies. Therefore, our study assessed the utilisation of postnatal care at a rural community level. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in two neighbouring villages in early 2006. A total of 150 women who had delivered in the previous 24 months were asked to participate in the study using a semi-structured questionnaire. Results: The proportion of women who had received postnatal care after delivery was low (34%). Less than one in five women (19%) received care within 48 hours of giving birth. Women in one village had less access to postnatal care than women in the neighbouring one. Lack of awareness was the main barrier to the utilisation of postnatal care. The woman's own occupation and ethnicity, the number of pregnancies and children and the husband's socio-economic status, occupation and education were significantly associated with the utilisation of postnatal care. Multivariate analysis showed that wealth as reflected in occupation and having attended antenatal are important factors associated with the uptake of postnatal care. In addition, women experiencing health problems appear strongly motivated to seek postnatal care. Conclusion: The postnatal care has a low uptake and is often regarded as inadequate in Nepal. This is an important message to both service providers and health-policy makers. Therefore, there is an urgent need to assess the actual quality of postnatal care provided. Also there appears to be a need for awareness-raising programmes highlighting the availability of current postnatal care where this is of sufficient quality

    Analytical model for residual bond strength of corroded reinforcement in concrete structures

    Bond strength deterioration in corrosion-damaged reinforced concrete structures significantly affects serviceability and load-carrying capacity in their remaining service life. This paper presents a new analytical model for predicting the cracking development in the surrounding concrete and the residual bond strength of rebar in concrete structures due to reinforcement corrosion. The proposed analytical method adopts the thick-walled cylinder model for the cover concrete and considers the realistic properties of the corrosion-induced cracked concrete such as anisotropic behavior, residual tensile strength, and reduced tensile stiffness. As corrosion progresses, three phases for bond strength evolution associated with concrete cracking development are defined and the corresponding corrosion levels in each phase are determined. By using the constructed new governing equation, the crack width growth in the concrete cover and the radial bursting pressure at the bond interface are evaluated. The ultimate bond strength is then estimated from the contributions of adhesion, confinement, and corrosion pressure as a function of corrosion level. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed analytical model is demonstrated by comparing the predicted results with experimental data available, and the results show that the proposed model is useful for predicting the bond strength evolution of the corroded rebar in concrete structures

    Protected areas: a resource or constraint for local people?

    We investigated local people’s perceptions, knowledge, and attitudes toward conservation planning and management in Chitral Gol National Park in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) of Pakistan. A literature review was undertaken to unravel the historic drivers behind the formation of this protected area. Key informant interviews and questionnaire surveys were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of current governance approaches adopted by the park management authorities. Community-based questionnaire surveys and key-informant interviews focused on local communities’ knowledge and awareness of the objectives of the park, people’s role in decision-making, social characteristics, and resource use structures. The information from these surveys was evaluated within the context of good governance and sustainability of park management. Results show a lack of awareness and a low level of participation in protected area management, but a high degree of willingness in the communities to participate in conservation activities. An analysis of the survey data suggests that the park authorities enforce strict protection measures within the park, but this approach lacks a strong vision of sustainability. The surveys reveal that the local people have a very strong sense of belonging to the place and are willing to contribute to the protection of the PA. A large majority of the respondents rely on electronic media as their main source of information, which could potentially form the best medium for conservation campaigning in the region. With these findings in mind, we propose changes to the current governance model for effective and sustainable management of the park in the future

    Care for perinatal illness in rural Nepal: a descriptive study with cross-sectional and qualitative components

    BACKGROUND: Maternal, perinatal and neonatal mortality rates remain high in rural areas of developing countries. Most deliveries take place at home and care-seeking behaviour is often delayed. We report on a combined quantitative and qualitative study of care seeking obstacles and practices relating to perinatal illness in rural Makwanpur district, Nepal, with particular emphasis on consultation strategies. METHODS: The analysis included a survey of 8798 women who reported a birth in the previous two years [of whom 3557 reported illness in their pregnancy], on 30 case studies of perinatal morbidity and mortality, and on 43 focus group discussions with mothers, other family members and health workers. RESULTS: Early pregnancy was often concealed, preparation for birth was minimal and trained attendance at birth was uncommon. Family members were favoured attendants, particularly mothers-in-law. The most common recalled maternal complications were prolonged labour, postpartum haemorrhage and retained placenta. Neonatal death, though less definable, was often associated with cessation of suckling and shortness of breath. Many home-based care practices for maternal and neonatal illness were described. Self-medication was common. There were delays in recognising and acting on danger signs, and in seeking care beyond the household, in which the cultural requirement for maternal seclusion, and the perceived expense of care, played a part. Of the 760 women who sought care at a government facility, 70% took more than 12 hours from the decision to seek help to actual consultation. Consultation was primarily with traditional healers, who were key actors in the ascription of causation. Use of the government primary health care system was limited: the most common source of allopathic care was the district hospital. CONCLUSIONS: Major obstacles to seeking care were: a limited capacity to recognise danger signs; the need to watch and wait; and an overwhelming preference to treat illness within the community. Safer motherhood and newborn care programmes in rural communities, must address both community and health facility care to have an impact on morbidity and mortality. The roles of community actors such as mothers-in-law, husbands, local healers and pharmacies, and increased access to properly trained birth attendants need to be addressed if delays in reaching health facilities are to be shortened

    Ambivalence towards discourse of disaster resilience

    This paper investigates empirically how the international aid community (IAC)—donors and practitioners—considers and implements disaster resilience in a specific country setting, Nepal, and throughout the rest of the world. A key finding is that there is ambivalence about a concept that has become a discourse. On a global level, the IAC utilises the discourse of resilience in a cautiously positive manner as a bridging concept. On a national level, it is being used to influence the Government of Nepal, as well as serving as an operational tool of donors. The mythical resilient urban community is fashioned in the IAC's imaginary; understanding how people create communities and what type of linkages with government urban residents desire to develop their resilience strategies is missing, though, from the discussion. Disaster resilience can be viewed as another grand plan to enhance the lives of people. Yet, regrettably, an explicit focus on individuals and their communities is lost in the process
