Offenders resides in prison faces many problems Isolation from the families overcrowding in prison guilt and stigmatization are main causes of deterioration in mental health of prisoners Present study intends to assess mental health problem in two groups of convicted criminals murderers and rapists in terms of depression anxiety and stress Based on purposive sampling technique 72 convicted criminals were selected from Birsa Munda Central Jail Hotwar Ranchi India Both the groups of criminals were matched on various socio-demographic parameters such as gender age education religion marital status residence and occupation All participants were assessed on Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale DASS Obtained responses were scored by using standard scoring procedures and subsequently statistically analyzed by using Chi-square test In present study rapists group have shown significant difference on scale of depression in comparison to murderer s group Whereas there were no significant differences found between both the groups on level of anxiety and stress Mental health problems were found prevalent in both the groups but more prominent in rapist s group Rapists group have shown more symptoms and severity of depression anxiety and stress than the murderers group in present stud

Crosstalk between circadian rhythms, sleep and eating habits to improve public health

    Get PDF
Lifestyle changes in the past few decades have resulted in irregularity in sleep and meal timings. People are taking less sleep and resorting more to unhealthy food and eating habits. These factors are the most important health determinants. Sleep, food choices and eating habits are closely associated with each other. Thus, the crosstalk between circadian rhythms, sleep, and food needs urgent attention and discussion for better health management. Various research studies indicate that a healthy trend in sleep augments the regularity in meal timings and good eating habits. Healthy food and eating habits, in turn, boost sleep quality. Deterioration in the quality of anyone adversely affects the other. Several health disorders like obesity, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular problems, and low immunity can be linked to these disturbances. The present review considers several previous studies to point out the inter-relationship between sleep and eating habits and the various health disorders arising from poor attention. Poor sleep promotes the tendency to eat junk food or eat at odd times, such as snacking late at night, leading to weight gain and other health problems. Junk food and unhealthy eating habits cause sleep disturbances. This inter-relationship of sleep and food preferences is important as it can have important treatment implications for health disorders arising due to these modifiable behavioural factors. Circadian alignment, improvements in sleep timings, and healthy eating habits have positive effects on other health behaviours as well.

An unusual presentation of vulvar cavernous hemangioma in a 10-year-old premenarchal girl: a rare entity

Vascular tumors of the female genitalia are unusual. Hemangiomas are benign tumors of the blood vessels. Usually they are asymptomatic but may present as discomfort, pain and other symptoms. However, vulvar cavernous hemangioma can be seen in newborns and infants, but rarely occur in children and adult women. A 10-year old premenarchal girl presented with a painless swelling on her right labia majora since birth which was increasing gradually. On examination, a well-defined, soft, mobile and non-tender multicystic swelling was observed involving right labia majora and minora of approximately 5×6 cm in size. An ultrasound of the lesion showed a well-circumscribed, hypo echoic mass with multicystic lesion of size 40×14×44 mm arising from right labia majora with vascularity on color Doppler and venous flow on spectral pattern, suggestive of vascular malformation. Surgical excision of lesion was performed with the utmost care to preserve the surrounding healthy tissue and vulvar anatomy. Histopathological examination (HPE) report confirmed the diagnosis of a cavernous hemangioma with no evidence of malignancy. Vulvar cavernous hemangioma is an uncommon vascular tumor that can be rarely seen in pediatric patients. Imaging studies, such as ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), play a crucial role in confirming the diagnosis and guiding the management. Surgical excision with preservation of healthy tissue is the treatment of choice. Long-term follow-up is essential to monitor recurrence and patient's well-being

Utility of adzuki bean [Vigna angularis (Willd.) Ohwi & Ohashi] simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers in genetic analysis of mungbean and related Vigna spp.

In the present study, 78 mapped simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers representing 11 linkage groups of adzuki bean were evaluated for transferability to  mungbean and related Vigna spp. 41 markers amplified characteristic bands in at least one Vigna species. The transferability percentage across the genotypes ranged from 60.97 to 92.6% with 87.8% in Vigna radiata and Vigna mungo, 62.2% in Vigna unguiculata, 91.8% in Vigna umbellata, 78% in Vigna mungo var. sylvestris and 80% in Vigna trilobata, respectively. Five major clusters were observed using unweighted pair group method with an arithmetic mean (UPGMA) with each cluster representing a particular Vigna species. We have successfully utilized adzuki bean SSRs in amplifying microsatellite sequences in Vigna species and inferring phylogenetic relationships by correlating the rate of transfer among them. The polymorphic SSR markers identified in this study would be useful in the analysis of genetic diversity, gene mapping and other aspects of genetic studies in mungbean and related species.Key words: Adzuki bean, simple sequence repeat (SSR), inter-genomic marker transferability, genetic diversity, mungbean, Vigna spp

Mechanism of gallic acid biosynthesis in bacteria (Escherichia coli) and walnut (Juglans regia)

Gallic acid (GA), a key intermediate in the synthesis of plant hydrolysable tannins, is also a primary anti-inflammatory, cardio-protective agent found in wine, tea, and cocoa. In this publication, we reveal the identity of a gene and encoded protein essential for GA synthesis. Although it has long been recognized that plants, bacteria, and fungi synthesize and accumulate GA, the pathway leading to its synthesis was largely unknown. Here we provide evidence that shikimate dehydrogenase (SDH), a shikimate pathway enzyme essential for aromatic amino acid synthesis, is also required for GA production. Escherichia coli (E. coli) aroE mutants lacking a functional SDH can be complemented with the plant enzyme such that they grew on media lacking aromatic amino acids and produced GA in vitro. Transgenic Nicotianatabacum lines expressing a Juglans regia SDH exhibited a 500% increase in GA accumulation. The J. regia and E. coli SDH was purified via overexpression in E. coli and used to measure substrate and cofactor kinetics, following reduction of NADP+ to NADPH. Reversed-phase liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray mass spectrometry (RP-LC/ESI–MS) was used to quantify and validate GA production through dehydrogenation of 3-dehydroshikimate (3-DHS) by purified E. coli and J. regia SDH when shikimic acid (SA) or 3-DHS were used as substrates and NADP+ as cofactor. Finally, we show that purified E. coli and J. regia SDH produced GA in vitro

During the elementary school years, children undergo important developmental changes. They become more logical and their attention gets more adaptable. This age span coincides with the time frame in which children develop an understanding of mental states and processes. In particular, , young children acquire the ability to put together their conceptual knowledge of intention and false belief (Astington, 1991; Chandler & Hala, 1994). Piaget was of the opinion that the children progress starts with by being cognitively self-centred i.e., children cannot know that their own perspective may differ from those of others. Even after children who become aware of their perspective differences, they only gradually acquire skill with age in their various perspective and capabilities (Flavell, 1992; Shanz, 1983)
