Public Policies of Welfare State and Child Poverty in the European Union

    Get PDF
Combating child poverty is desirable to ensure equality of opportunities across children, as well as fostering the sustainability of the societal well-being for future generations. This paper focuses on the study of child poverty in the 28 Member States of the European Union over the period 2008–2018. We analyse the relationship between child poverty and government social expenditure by controlling it with tax structure (ratio direct taxes over indirect taxes), economic growth and socio-demographic characteristics. For that, we rely on panel data methodology. This paper has verified that the effectiveness of the government social spending programmes to reduce child poverty also depends on the progressiveness of the country’s tax structure. Government spending on health and education programmes could be more effective in reducing child poverty in Member States with less progressive tax structure, provided they reached the average level of public spending for the whole of the European Union. By contrast, a positive relationship between child poverty and government social protection spending regardless of the tax structure of countries was found. In this case, the underlying forces that lead to less effectiveness of social protection programmes are also stronger in the less progressive Member States.Junta de Andalucia SEJ-39

Pipeline template for streaming applications on heterogeneous chips

We address the problem of providing support for executing single streaming applications implemented as a pipeline of stages that run on heterogeneous chips comprised of several cores and one on-chip GPU. In this paper, we mainly focus on the API that allows the user to specify the type of parallelism exploited by each pipeline stage running on the multicore CPU, the mapping of the pipeline stages to the devices (GPU or CPU), and the number of active threads. We use a real streaming application as a case of study to illustrate the experimental results that can be obtained with this API. With this example, we evaluate how the different parameter values affect the performance and energy efficiency of a heterogenous on-chip processor (Exynos 5 Octa) that has three different computational cores: a GPU, an ARM Cortex-A15 quad-core, and an ARM Cortex-A7 quad-core.

Our findings for the long term indicate that social capital and values and cultural dimensions have the greatest capacity to predict changes in subjective well-being. Likewise, the correlation between economic resources and subjective well-being is weaker due to the small increase registered in household income and because people compare their income with those who are better off and feel envy. In the short term, economic resources have the highest capacity to predict both improvements (ups) and declines (downs) in subjective well-being. Finally, we also suggest that, whenever information is available, personality traits should be taken into account in the analysis of changes in subjective well-being over time in order to achieve more reliable estimates.Government of Spain (MINECO/FEDER) ECO2015-63734-PSpanish Government FPU2014/1123Fortalecimiento Program of the University of Granada SEJ-340 SEJ-393Universidad de Granada/CBU

Privacy concerns in quick response code mobile promotion: The role of social anxiety and situational involvement

Drawing upon utility maximization theory, this study examines the conse-quences of quick response (QR) code mobile promotion in terms of information privacy concerns, defensive responses (intention to protect, fabricate, or withhold), and loyalty. Two contextual variables, social anxiety and situational involvement, are hypothesized as moderators. The main survey employs the scenario method with 667 general consumers in Japan. The results indicate that most of the main effects are supported for both modera-tors. There are strong interaction effects of social anxiety and situational involvement in intention to protect and intention to fabricate personal information. Our study suggests that QR code promotion is a practical and useful tool for loyalty, and its use may significantly depend on its context, whether physical or psychological. This research was funded by a grant from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Inno-vation (National Plan for Research, Development and Innovation ECO2011-30105)

From Rabbinical Tales to Spanish Medieval Tales

    Get PDF
When medieval Hebrew narrative texts are analized and compared with the first narrative Works in the Spanish language, we can easily realize that there is a certain similarity both in the subjects as well as in the formal structure of these Works and, naturally, in their contents, mainly didactic in their character. The aim of this report is to show these similarities, especially regarding the selection of motifs, and to notice how certain topics, belonging to the purest and most ancient Jewish tradition, persist in the medieval Castillian collections
