    Opinions about bedside nursing handover in surgical units: translation, adaptation and validation of questionnaires

    Enquadramento: Apesar da visita de enfermagem ou passagem de turno junto dos doentes garantir a continuidade dos cuidados de enfermagem, origina diversas questões éticas. Objetivos: Traduzir, adaptar e validar 2 questionários de colheita de dados sobre a visita de enfermagem em unidades cirúrgicas para a cultura portuguesa; identificar a opinião dos doentes e dos enfermeiros sobre a visita de enfermagem. Metodologia: Tradução, retroversão e adaptação dos questionários aplicados em 7 unidades cirúrgicas de um hospital central em Portugal de 22/08/2008 a 28/06/2009. A amostragem não probabilística acidental foi constituída por 137 enfermeiros e 96 doentes. Resultados: A visita de enfermagem promove a relação empática e de ajuda; a observação do doente e o planeamento de cuidados, no entanto é necessário clarificar o seu objetivo; incentivar à participação e ao envolvimento dos doentes; utilizar um discurso compreensível e garantir a privacidade da informação. Conclusão: Os questionários revelaram-se fidedignos e válidos na identificação das opiniões dos doentes e dos enfermeiros sobre a visita de enfermagem nas unidades de cirurgia em estudo.Background: Although bedside nursing handover ensures the continuity of nursing care, it raises several ethical issues. Objectives: To translate, adapt and validate 2 data collection questionnaires about bedside nursing handover in surgical units into Portuguese, and identify the patients and nurses’ opinions about bedside nursing handover. Methodology: Translation, back-translation and adaptation of the questionnaires in 7 surgical units of a central hospital in Portugal between 22/08/2008 and 28/06/2009. The non- -probability sampling consisted of 137 nurses and 96 patients. Results: Bedside nursing handover promotes an empathic and helping relationship, patient observation and care planning; however, it is necessary to clarify its purpose, encourage patient participation and engagement, use clear information, and ensure information privacy. Conclusion: The questionnaires proved to be reliable and valid to identify the patients and nurses’ opinions about bedside nursing handover in the surgical units under analysis

    Erbium luminescence from hydrogenated amorphous silicon-erbium prepared by cosputtering

    Hydrogenated amorphous silicon with small amounts of erbium (Er/Si concentration similar to 5 at.%) was prepared by radio frequency sputtering from a Si target partially covered by tiny metallic Er chunks. Four sets of samples were studied: nonintentionally contaminated hydrogenated and nonhydrogenated amorphous silicon-erbium (a-SiEr:H and a-SiEr); nitrogen doped a-SiEr(N):H and oxygen contaminated a-SiEr(O):H. Samples from the first two sets present only faint 1.54 mu m photoluminescence characteristic from Er3+ ions even at 77 K. Samples from the other sets show this luminescence at 77 K as deposited, without any further annealing step. Thermal annealing up to 500 degrees C increases the photoluminescence intensity, and room temperature emissions become strong enough to be easily detected. These results indicate that in an amorphous silicon environment the chemical neighborhood of the Er3+ ions is crucial for efficient 1.54 mu m emission. Raman scattering from both as-deposited and annealed samples showed that network disorder relaxation by annealing is not determinant for efficient Er3+ luminescence.     Ultrafast non-inverting wavelength conversion by cross-absorption modulation in silicon wire waveguides.

    Abstract We demonstrate all-optical wavelength conversion by means of cross absorption effect induced by Two Photon Absorption (TPA) in submicron sized Si wire waveguides. Optical pulses of 1.6 ps at 1GHz repetition rate were successfully converted from 1550nm to 1532nm. We discuss the performance at higher speed. Our results showed that silicon waveguides have potential applications in high speed photonic signal processing

    The use of augmented reality for solving arithmetic problems for preschool children

    Preschool children are required to acquire problem-solving ability and related time and sequence concepts to solve mathematical story problems. The maturation and pervasion of disruptive technologies, such as augmented reality (AR), may help preschool children to better acquire this knowledge and skills. However, it is still unknown how preschoolers would make use of AR as a learning tool for tackling arithmetic story problems with the involvement of the concepts of time and sequence. Consequently, the present study attempted to employ direct observation and interview methods to compare and gain insights into young children’s learning behaviors under traditional 2D pictorial and AR contexts. In line with the early development trajectories of a normal child aged 4–6 years old, a series of planned arithmetic problems which primarily comprised seriation (e.g. first, second, third) and scheduling (e.g. arriving, leaving) concepts were structured in scenario-based stories and designed specifically for preschool children. The findings of the current study reveal that AR intervention may well develop the problem-solving and independent mathematical thinking ability for preschool children by encouraging them to consider all information involved in the story problems, rather than simply guessing the answer from a 2D pictorial mode. Finally, based on the fact that the majority of preschool children still rely on a concrete counting method, the recommendation is to integrate AR technology into the traditional pictorial scenarios for the purpose of supporting the development of children’s ability to solve arithmetic story problem

    Body composition and body fat distribution are related to cardiac autonomic control in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease patients

    BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Heart rate recovery (HRR), a cardiac autonomic control marker, was shown to be related to body composition (BC), yet this was not tested in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients. The aim of this study was to determine if, and to what extent, markers of BC and body fat (BF) distribution are related to cardiac autonomic control in NAFLD patients. SUBJECTS/METHODS: BC was assessed with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in 28 NAFLD patients (19 men, 51±13 years, and 9 women, 47±13 years). BF depots ratios were calculated to assess BF distribution. Subjects’ HRR was recorded 1 (HRR1) and 2 min (HRR2) immediately after a maximum graded exercise test. RESULTS: BC and BF distribution were related to HRR; particularly weight, trunk BF and trunk BF-to-appendicular BF ratio showed a negative relation with HRR1 (r 1⁄4 0.613, r 1⁄4 0.597 and r 1⁄4 0.547, respectively, Po0.01) and HRR2 (r 1⁄4 0.484, r 1⁄4 0.446, Po0.05, and r 1⁄4 0.590, Po0.01, respectively). Age seems to be related to both HRR1 and HRR2 except when controlled for BF distribution. The preferred model in multiple regression should include trunk BF-to-appendicular BF ratio and BF to predict HRR1 (r2 1⁄4 0.549; Po0.05), and trunk BF-to-appendicular BF ratio alone to predict HRR2 (r2 1⁄4 0.430; Po0.001). CONCLUSIONS: BC and BF distribution were related to HRR in NAFLD patients. Trunk BF-to-appendicular BF ratio was the best independent predictor of HRR and therefore may be best related to cardiovascular increased risk, and possibly act as a mediator in age-related cardiac autonomic control variation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Making Associativity Operational

    The purpose of this paper is to propose an operational idea for developing algebraic thinking in the absence of alphanumeric symbols. The paper reports on a design experiment encouraging preschool children to use the associative property algebraically. We describe the theoretical basis of the design, the tasks used, and examples of algebraic thinking in 5–6-year-old children. Theoretically, the paper makes a critical distinction between operational and structural meanings of the notion of equality. We argue that mathematical thinking involving equality among young learners can comprise both an operational and a structural conception and that the operational conception has a side that is productively linked to the structural conception. Using carefully designed hands-on tasks, the crux of the paper is the realization of algebraic thinking (in verbal mathematics) as operationally experienced in the ability to transform one number structure, with a quantity that is subject to change, into another through equality-preserving transformations
