    Using high-pressure torsion to fabricate an Al-Ti hybrid system with exceptional mechanical properties

    A novel hybrid material was fabricated from the Al-Ti system using high-pressure torsion up to 50 turns. Microstructural observations revealed intermetallic phases and mixing zones enriched in Ti, consisting of grains of ~20 nm within an Al matrix. Microhardness measurements gave values higher than in the HPT-processed bulk aluminium alloy

    Pulsar Wind Nebulae with Bow Shocks: Non-thermal Radiation and Cosmic Ray Leptons

    Pulsars with high spin-down power produce relativistic winds radiating a non-negligible fraction of this power over the whole electromagnetic range from radio to gamma-rays in the pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe). The rest of the power is dissipated in the interactions of the PWNe with the ambient interstellar medium (ISM). Some of the PWNe are moving relative to the ambient ISM with supersonic speeds producing bow shocks. In this case, the ultrarelativistic particles accelerated at the termination surface of the pulsar wind may undergo reacceleration in the converging flow system formed by the plasma outflowing from the wind termination shock and the plasma inflowing from the bow shock. The presence of magnetic perturbations in the flow, produced by instabilities induced by the accelerated particles themselves, is essential for the process to work. A generic outcome of this type of reacceleration is the creation of particle distributions with very hard spectra, such as are indeed required to explain the observed spectra of synchrotron radiation with photon indices Γâ‰Č 1.5. The presence of this hard spectral component is specific to PWNe with bow shocks (BSPWNe). The accelerated particles, mainly electrons and positrons, may end up containing a substantial fraction of the shock ram pressure. In addition, for typical ISM and pulsar parameters, the e+ released by these systems in the Galaxy are numerous enough to contribute a substantial fraction of the positrons detected as cosmic ray (CR) particles above few tens of GeV and up to several hundred GeV. The escape of ultrarelativistic particles from a BSPWN—and hence, its appearance in the far-UV and X-ray bands—is determined by the relative directions of the interstellar magnetic field, the velocity of the astrosphere and the pulsar rotation axis. In this respect we review the observed appearance and multiwavelength spectra of three different types of BSPWNe: PSR J0437-4715, the Guitar and Lighthouse nebulae, and Vela-like objects. We argue that high resolution imaging of such objects provides unique information both on pulsar winds and on the ISM. We discuss the interpretation of imaging observations in the context of the model outlined above and estimate the BSPWN contribution to the positron flux observed at the Earth

    A Soluble BAFF Antagonist, BR3-Fc, Decreases Peripheral Blood B Cells and Lymphoid Tissue Marginal Zone and Follicular B Cells in Cynomolgus Monkeys

    BAFF (also known as BLyS), a member of the tumor necrosis factor superfamily, plays a critical role in the maturation and development of B cells. BAFF has three receptors on B cells, the most crucial of which is BR3. In this study, we demonstrate the biological outcome of BAFF blockade in cynomolgus monkeys using a soluble fusion protein consisting of human BR3 and human IgG1 Fc. In vitro, BR3-Fc blocked BAFF-mediated survival and proliferation of cynomolgus monkey B cells. Weekly treatment of cynomolgus monkeys with BR3-Fc for 13 to 18 weeks resulted in significant B-cell reduction in the peripheral blood and in lymphoid organs. CD21(high) B cells in lymphoid tissues, a subset analogous to human marginal zone B cells, expressed nearly twofold higher BR3 levels than did CD21(med) B cells. Lymphoid tissue flow cytometric analysis showed that BR3-Fc reduced this CD21(high) B-cell subset to a greater extent than it reduced CD21(med) B cells. Dual-label immunohistochemistry and morphometric image analysis supported these results by demonstrating that BR3-Fc reduced a significant proportion of the B cells within the splenic inner and outer marginal zones. These findings should prove very useful in guiding the desired therapeutic use of BR3-Fc for autoimmune diseases in the clinic

    Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) belongs to a subgroup of coronaviruses rampant in bats for centuries. It caused the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Most patients recover, but a minority of severe cases experience acute respiratory distress or an inflammatory storm devastating many organs that can lead to patient death. The spread of SARS-CoV-2 was facilitated by the increasing intensity of air travel, urban congestion and human contact during the past decades. Until therapies and vaccines are available, tests for virus exposure, confinement and distancing measures have helped curb the pandemic. Vision: The COVID-19 pandemic calls for safeguards and remediation measures through a systemic response. Self-organizing initiatives by scientists and citizens are developing an advanced collective intelligence response to the coronavirus crisis. Their integration forms Olympiads of Solidarity and Health. Their ability to optimize our response to COVID-19 could serve as a model to trigger a global metamorphosis of our societies with far-reaching consequences for attacking fundamental challenges facing humanity in the 21st century. Mission: For COVID-19 and these other challenges, there is no alternative but action. Meeting in Paris in 2003, we set out to "rethink research to understand life and improve health." We have formed an international coalition of academia and industry ecosystems taking a systems medicine approach to understanding COVID-19 by thoroughly characterizing viruses, patients and populations during the pandemic, using openly shared tools. All results will be publicly available with no initial claims for intellectual property rights. This World Alliance for Health and Wellbeing will catalyze the creation of medical and health products such as diagnostic tests, drugs and vaccines that become common goods accessible to all, while seeking further alliances with civil society to bridge with socio-ecological and technological approaches that characterise urban systems, for a collective response to future health emergencies
