    Characterizing the continuum in Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies

Instituto de Astronomía Teórica y Experimental; Argentina.Abstract: Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) active galactic nuclei (AGN) are a subclass of AGN with Seyfert 1 characteristics but without prominent broad lines. In this work we approach the determination of the non-stellar continuum using the spectral synthesis technique. We chose a sample of 130 NLS1 available in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). This sample comprehend all the objects of such class catalogued on the local universe (z<0.1). With this method we determined (a) central black hole masses, (b) accretion rates, (c) electronic densities in the narrow line region.     Human biogeography and faunal exploitation in Diamante River basin, central western Argentina

    A biogeographic model used to describe human peopling of southern Mendoza, central western Argentina, proposed an intensification process activated by an increase in population growth rate during the Late Holocene. During this process, high-ranked resources at the surroundings of residential camps were depleted, and hunter–gatherers broadened their diet by incorporating a larger number of low-ranked prey and domesticated plant resources. In this paper, we evaluate an alternative hypothesis, focusing on zooarchaeological data from the Diamante River basin. The results show that faunal resource intensification does not appear to have occurred in the Diamante River basin during the Late Holocene. Faunal consumption in Diamante River basin mainly reflects the local fauna in each ecological zone. The data do not show a lack of higher ranked resources. We suggest it is more likely that the demographic increase was not significant enough to cause an impact on the faunal resources. The archaeological evidence should be improved and analysed in smaller scales to continue with the intensification debate.Fil: Otaola, Clara.     Free and open source software tools for medical image processing in the treatment of refractory epilepsy

    The methods and tools that assists during the non-invasive determination of functional regions in cases of refractory epilepsy are essential. Along with this train of thought, a new method is presented for the dynamic visualization of the electric map and its incorporation in a multimodal scene using free image processing tools, such as VTK and Python. From the electric map andgeometry generated by Brainstorm the registration is done obtaining different transformation matrices and with them three-dimensional surface files are written along with the information of the electric map. The visualization together with the rest of the patient's co-registered imaging studies can be integrated into a multimodal free viewer, such as 3D Slicer.     Left ventricular thrombus mimicking primary cardiac tumor in a patient with primary antiphospholipid syndrome and recurrent systemic embolism

    Primary antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a well-defined entity characterized by spontaneous and recurrent abortion, thrombocytopenia and recurrent vascular thromboses (arterial and venous). Left ventricular thrombus mimicking primary cardiac tumor with recurrent systemic embolism has not been previously reported. In this report we describe a 39 year-old man admitted to hospital presenting with left hemiparesis and a peripheral embolism. He had no history of thrombotic events. Transthoracic echocardiography showed a large, polypoid and mobile mass (4.0 × 1.2 cm) attached to the apex of the left ventricle, highly suggestive of primary cardiac tumor. The patient subsequently underwent open heart surgery. The histological examination showed an older thrombus and a fresh thrombus. Post-operative laboratory tests showed lupus anticoagulant activity, confirming the primary APS diagnosis. The patient initiated treatment with oral anticoagulation (INR levels between 2 and 3) and was discharged 29 days after surgery. At ten month follow-up, he was symptom-free with long-term anticoagulation therapy. No evidence of intracardiac mass recurrence on two-dimensional echocardiography was seen. Intracardiac thrombus has been rarely reported as a complication of primary APS. Left ventricular mass mimicking primary cardiac tumor with recurrent systemic embolism has not been previously reported. Pre-operative investigations could not distinguish such a thrombus from a cardiac tumor and the diagnosis was made post-operatively

    Phytochrome B integrates light and temperature signals in Arabidopsis

    Ambient temperature regulates many aspects of plant growth and development, but its sensors are unknown. Here, we demonstrate that the phytochrome B (phyB) photoreceptor participates in temperature perception through its temperature-dependent reversion from the active Pfr state to the inactive Pr state. Increased rates of thermal reversion upon exposing Arabidopsis seedlings to warm environments reduce both the abundance of the biologically active Pfr-Pfr dimer pool of phyB and the size of the associated nuclear bodies, even in daylight. Mathematical analysis of stem growth for seedlings expressing wild-type phyB or thermally stable variants under various combinations of light and temperature revealed that phyB is physiologically responsive to both signals. We therefore propose that in addition to its photoreceptor functions, phyB is a temperature sensor in plants

    A theoretical study of the structural phases of Group 5B - 6B metals and their transport properties

    In order to predict the stable and metastable phases of the bcc metals in the block of the Periodic Table defined by groups 5B to 6B and periods 4 to 6, as well as the structure dependence of their transport properties, we have performed full potential computations of the total energies per unit cell as a function of the c/a ratio at constant experimental volume. In all cases, a metastable body centered tetragonal (bct) phase was predicted from the calculations. The total energy differences between the calculated stable and metastable phases ranged from 0.09 eV/cell (vanadium) to 0.39 eV/cell (tungsten). The trends in resistivity as a function of structure and atomic number are discussed in terms of a model of electron transport in metals. Theoretical calculations of the electrical resistivity and other transport properties show that bct phases derived from group 5B elements are more conductive than the corresponding bcc phases, while bct phases formed from group 6B elements are less conductive than the corresponding bcc phases. Special attention is paid to the phases of tantalum where we show that the frequently observed beta phase is not a simple tetragonal distortion of bcc tantalum

    Comparative analysis of molecular signatures suggests the use of gabapentin for the management of endometriosis-associated pain

    Background: It has been repetitively shown that the transcription factors DLX5 and DLX6 are drastically downregulated in endometriotic lesions when compared with eutopic endometrium. These findings suggest that regulatory cascades involving DLX5/6 might be at the origin of endometriosis symptoms such as chronic pelvic pain (CPP). We have shown that inactivation of Dlx5 and Dlx5/6 in the mouse uterus results in an endometrial phenotype reminiscent of endometriosis. Methods: We focused on genes that present a similar deregulation in endometriosis and in Dlx5/6-null mice in search of new endometriosis targets. Results: We confirmed a strong reduction of DLX5 expression in endometriosis implants. We identified a signature of 30 genes similarly deregulated in human endometriosis implants and in Dlx5/6-null mouse uteri, reinforcing the notion that the downregulation of Dlx5/6 is an early event in the progress of endometriosis. CACNA2D3, a component of the \u3b12\u3b4 family of voltagedependent calcium channel complex, was strongly overexpressed both in mutant mouse uteri and in endometriosis implants, were also CACNA2D1 and CACNA2D2, other members of the \u3b12\u3b4 family involved in nociception, are upregulated. Conclusion: Comparative analysis of gene expression signatures from endometriosis and mouse models showed that calcium channel subunits \u3b12\u3b4 involved in nociception can be targets for the treatment of endometriosis-associated pain. CACNA2D3 has been associated with pain sensitization and heat nociception in animal models. In patients, CACNA2D3 variants were associated with reduced sensitivity to acute noxious stimuli. As \u3b12\u3b4s were targets of gabapentinoid analgesics, the results suggested the use of these drugs for the treatment of endometriosis-associated pain. Indeed, recent small-scale clinical studies have shown that gabapentin could be effective in women with CPP. The findings of this study reinforce the need for a large definitive trial

    Comparison of High-Volume and High-Intensity Upper Body Resistance Training on Acute Neuromuscular Performance and Ratings of Perceived Exertion

The assessment of neuromuscular fatigue is important for minimizing the risks of nonfunctional overreaching, and monitoring training loads has rapidly grown in recent years. The objective of the study was to compare the acute upper body performance and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) responses to high-volume (HV) and high-intensity (HI) resistance-training loads. Sixteen young resistance-trained men (4 repetition maximum [RM] bench press = 105.8 ± 15.9 kg) were divided into two groups of eight subjects each that performed a HI (3 sets of 4RM with 180 s of rest), and a HV (4 sets of 12RM with 90 s of rest) training sessions. Session RPE was obtained 30 min Post. The medicine-ball throw (MBT) performance was measured at pre, and 10 min post. Training volume load (movements × load), and intensity (volume load ÷ movements) were calculated. Volume load was significantly higher for HV (10890 ± 1241 kg) than HI (2718 ± 413 kg) protocol (p \u3c 0.001). Intensity was significantly higher for HI (100.7 ± 15.3 kg) than HV (75.6 ± 8.6 kg) protocol (p = 0.002). MBT performance was significantly reduced from pre- to post- HV (p \u3c 0.001; Δ = −11%), but not in HI (p = 0.15; Δ = −5%). RPE was significantly higher Post-HI (9.9 ± 0.4) than Post HV (8.9 ± 0.8) (p = 0.01). We conclude that higher volume loads induce greater upper body neuromuscular fatigue in young resistance-trained men. Session RPE may reflect training intensity, but not the performance impairments

    Evaluación de las características hidroquímicas de antiguos cauces del Río Dulce en Villa Nueva, provincia de Santiago del Estero

    El acceso al agua segura, en pequeñas localidades como Villa Nueva, es un problema de vieja data. El Área de estudio está situada en el sector SO de la provincia de Santiago del Estero, y geomorfológicamente se ubica en el tramo medio de la Llanura Aluvial del Río Dulce. Se caracteriza por una sucesión de antiguos cauces colmatados y entrelazados. El trabajo de investigación se orientó hacia la caracterización hidroquímica del acuífero libre, y su utilización como soporte de almacenamiento y de recarga en forma natural o artificial, para el abastecimiento de agua destinada al consumo humano. Mediante perforaciones se realizaron estudios granulométricos de los sedimentos que permitieron obtener una aproximación acerca de la permeabilidad. Los análisis físico-químicos de las muestras de agua obtenidas, no superan los límites tolerables de las aguas seguras, excepto una de ellas, que supera la concentración de sulfatos.Access to safe water, in small towns like Villa Nueva, is a long-standing problem. The research area is located in the SW sector of the province of Santiago del Estero, and geomorphologically is located in the middle stretch of the Dulce River Floodplain. It is characterized by a succession of former channels silted and intertwined. The research work was oriented towards free aquifer hydrochemical characterization, and their use as storage media and recharge in natural or artificial, for the supply of water for human consumption. Through perforations were made sediments grain size determination studies, we have obtained an approximation concerning permeability. The physico-chemical analysis of water samples obtained do not exceed tolerable limits of safe water, except one, which exceeds the concentration of sulfates.Universidad Nacional de La Plat

E.;Nozaki, H.The transition to multicellularity has occurred numerous times in all domains of life, yet its initial steps are poorly understood. The volvocine green algae are a tractable system for understanding the genetic basis of multicellularity including the initial formation of cooperative cell groups. Here we report the genome sequence of the undifferentiated colonial alga, Gonium pectorale, where group formation evolved by co-option of the retinoblastoma cell cycle regulatory pathway. Significantly, expression of the Gonium retinoblastoma cell cycle regulator in unicellular Chlamydomonas causes it to become colonial. The presence of these changes in undifferentiated Gonium indicates extensive group-level adaptation during the initial step in the evolution of multicellularity. These results emphasize an early and formative step in the evolution of multicellularity, the evolution of cell cycle regulation, one that may shed light on the evolutionary history of other multicellular innovations and evolutionary transitions
