    Transport certifications of cattle moved from France to Southern Italy and Greece: do they comply with Reg. EC 1/2005?

    Movements of livestock across the Member States is monitored using the Trade Control and Expert System (TRACES), a web-based veterinarian certification tool. This study aimed to evaluate the criticalities of this tracing system and the most frequent non-conformities in their compilation. TRACES of cattle (n = 320) departed from France and arriving or transiting across Puglia (Italy) in 2019 (n = 199) and 2020 (n = 121) were analysed. The distribution arriving in Italy and Greece did not vary between the 2 years. The majority of the bovine (53.4%) were medium-sized cattle transported for fattening with a median body weight of 410 kg. However, almost half of the TRACES did not report correctly the total expected loaded weight or the available space, so for them, it was impossible to calculate and double-check whether the minimal space allowance was respected. Long journeys must include a resting stop after the first 14 h, however, 20.9% of the examined and declared stops did not comply with it. Finally, comparing the expected declared journey duration with a calculated one (dividing travel distance by an average speed of 70 km/h, adding 1 h for loading and unloading, and 1 h or 24 h for resting stops), we found that only 30.6% of the journey durations were congruent. The irregularities resulted associated with consignors and transporters (p < .05). Overall, the proportion of mistakes and non-compliance suggest that there is a need to improve the current practice to enhance animal welfare during transportation

    Supported Gold Nanoparticles for Alcohols Oxidation in Continuous-Flow Heterogeneous Systems

    Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were anchored on alkynyl carbamate-functionalized support materials having the suitable features for application as catalysts in continuous-flow packed bed reactors. The functionalization step was carried out by grafting with the di-functional organosilane [3-(2-propynylcarbamate)propyl]triethoxysilane (PPTEOS) three commercial micrometer-sized oxide supports, i.e. silica, alumina, and titania. The alkynyl-carbamate moieties were capable to straightforwardly reduce the gold precursor HAuCl4 yielding the supported AuNPs systems Au/SiO2@Yne, Au/Al2O3@Yne, and Au/TiO2@Yne. A comparison among the three materials revealed that silica allowed the highest organic functionalization (12 wt%) as well as the highest gold loading (3.7 wt%). Moreover, TEM investigation showed only for Au/SiO2@Yne the presence of homogeneously distributed, spherically shaped AuNPs (av. diameter 15 nm). Au/SiO2@Yne is an efficient catalyst, both in batch and flow conditions, in the oxidation of a large variety of alcohols, using H2O2 as oxidizing agent, at a temperature of 90 \ub0C. Furthermore, under flow conditions, the catalyst worked for over 50 h without any significant decrease in the catalytic activity. The catalytic activity of the three catalysts was evaluated and compared in the oxidation of 1-phenylethanol as a model substrate. We found that the flow approach plays a strategic role in preserving the physical and chemical integrity of the solid catalysts during its use, with remarkable consequences for the reaction conversion (from 2% in batch to 80 % in flow) in the case of Au/TiO2@Yne

    Protection of Animals during Transport: Analysis of the Infringements Reported from 2009 to 2013 during On-Road Inspections in Italy

    Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 requires that vehicles that are transporting animals be subjected to checks conducted by competent authorities. Yearly, each member state sends a report to the European government on the infringements that have been discovered during on-road inspections. The reports that were published by the Italian Ministry of Public Health from 2009 to 2013 were analyzed. Possible associations between the type of infringement (related to animal welfare (AW), vehicle (V) and accompanying documents (D)), year, season, transported species, place of inspection, and competent authorities were identified. A total of 985 infringements were analyzed, with some vehicles receiving more than one (mean: 1.58; max: 9). A score (from 1 to 3) that was related to the severity of the infringements was created. In 2009 and 2010, there was a 50% higher probability of encountering penalties of a lower severity (D or V) than in 2011 (p < 0.0001). Vehicles that were transporting pigs showed the highest probability of committing animal welfare-related infringements (odds ratio (OR) = 3.85, 95% confidence interval (95%CI) = 1.82-8.76, p < 0.0001). Vehicles were four times more likely to suffer animal welfare-related penalties when traffic police worked in synergy with veterinary services (OR = 4.12, 95%CI = 1.70-11.13, p = 0.0005). Vehicles that were transporting Equidae and "other species," including pets, for commercial purposes were more likely to be fined for a lack or incompleteness of the veterinary documents than those transporting cattle (p = 0.002 and p = 0.004, respectively). This study gives statistical evidence of the implementation of EC 1/2005. The training of transporters and drivers on how to manage transport in an animal welfare-friendly manner and a standardized method on how to conduct road inspections among competent authorities are recommended

    Hysteresis and tunability characteristics of Ba(Zr,Ti)O(3) ceramics described by first order reversal curves diagrams

    The First Order Reversal Curves (FORC) diagrams are proposed for the characterization of the switching process and the tunability in Ba(ZrxTi1-x)O(3) ceramics with various compositions x in the range (0, 0.5), prepared via solid state reaction. The changes induced by the compositional-induced crossover ferroelectric-to-relaxor state are investigated by monitoring the changes of the FORC diagrams (the coercive and bias fields corresponding to the maximum, ratio of the reversible/irreversible contribution to the polarization, the diffuse character of the FORC distribution). The first derivative of the FORCs related to the tunability is a function of both the applied and reversal fields. The critical fields for the highest tunability were found to be composition-dependent

    Sentinel lymph node surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with T2 to T4, N0 and N1 breast cancer

    Abstract Background Histological status of axillary lymph nodes is an important prognostic factor in patients receiving surgery for breast cancer (BC). Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy (B) has rapidly replaced axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), and is now the standard of care for axillary staging in patients with clinically node-negative (N0) operable BC. The aim of this study is to compare pretreatment lymphoscintigraphy with a post primary systemic treatment (PST) scan in order to reduce the false-negative rates for SLNB. Methods In this single-institution study we considered 170 consecutive T2-4 N0-1 M0 BC patients treated with anthracycline-based PST. At the time of incisional biopsy, we performed sentinel lymphatic mapping. After PST, all patients repeated lymphoscintigraphy with the same methodology. During definitive surgery we performed further sentinel lymphatic mapping, SLNB and ALND. Results The SLN was removed in 158/170 patients giving an identification rate of 92.9% (95% confidence interval (CI) = 88.0–96.3%) and a false-negative rate of 14.0% (95% CI = 6.3–25.8%). SLNB revealed a sensitivity of 86.0% (95% CI = 74.2–93.7%), an accuracy of 94.9% (95% CI = 90.3–97.8%) and a negative predictive value of 92.7% (95% CI = 86.1–96.8%). Conclusion Identification rate, sensitivity and accuracy are in accordance with other studies on SLNB after PST, even after clinically negative node conversion following PST.     Phase II study of liposomal doxorubicin, docetaxel and trastuzumab in combination with metformin as neoadjuvant therapy for HER2-positive breast cancer

    Background:The aim of this study was to improve activity over single human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-blockade sequential neaodjuvant regimens for HER2-positive breast cancer, by exploiting the concomitant administration of trastuzumab, taxane and anthracycline, while restraining cardiac toxicity with use of liposomal doxorubicin, and by adding metformin, based on preliminary evidence of antitumor activity.Patients and methods:This multi-center, single-arm, two-stage phase II trial, assessed the safety and the activity of a new treatment regimen for HER2-positive, early or locally advanced breast cancer. Patients received six 21-day cycles of non-pegylated liposomal doxorubicin, 50 mg/m(2) intravenously (i.v.) on day 1, docetaxel, 30 mg/m(2) i.v. on days 2 and 9, trastuzumab, 2 mg/kg/week i.v. on days 2, 9, and 16 (with 4 mg/kg loading dose), in association with metformin 1000 mg orally twice daily. The primary endpoint was the rate of pathological complete response (pCR) in the breast and axilla (ypT0/is ypN0). A subgroup of patients performed a 3-deoxy-3-18F-fluorothymidine positron emission tomography (FLT-PET) at baseline and after one cycle.Results:Among 47 evaluable patients, there were 18 pCR [38.3%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 24.5-53.6%]. A negative estrogen-receptor status, high Ki67, and histological grade 3 were related with pCR, although only grade reached statistical significance. FLT-PET maximum standardized uptake value after one cycle was inversely related to pCR in the breast (odds ratio 0.29, 95% CI 0.06-1.30, p = 0.11). Toxicity included grade 3-4 neutropenia in 70% and febrile neutropenia in 4% of patients, grade 1-2 nausea/vomiting in 60%/38%, and grade 3 in 4%/2%, respectively, grade 1-2 diarrhea in 72%, and grade 3 in 6%. There were two cases of reversible grade 2 left-ventricular ejection-fraction decrease, and one case of sharp troponin-T increase.Conclusions:The concomitant administration of trastuzumab, liposomal doxorubicin, docetaxel, and metformin is safe and shows good activity, but does not appear to improve activity over conventional sequential regimens
