寛容社会における障害の受容と排除 : アメリカ合衆国における障害者の歴史に関する再検討
The purpose of the present paper is to clarify why and how the West, especially the United States of America, historically accepted or rejected people with disabilities, and to bring to light the implications of this history. Schools for both the deaf and the blind, and schools for "idiots" were accepted in American communities in the middle of the 19th century, even if education of those various types of students did not achieve equivalent results. However, "the feeble-minded" came to be excluded from American communities at the end of the 19th century because their behavior was different from others, and because of their lack of intelligence. Early in the 20th century, they came to be considered as a social menace, because of their antisocial acts which scientific research appeared to show were a consequence of their mental disabilities. It was on modern principles such as the right to education that "the feeble-minded" came to be included in educational programs; another reason for their inclusion is that it was contrary to modern ideals that their behavior would be rejected. Modern society has arbitrarily accepted those with some types of disability and rejected those with others, according to the current cultural and social context. Colonization by Clostridium difficile of neonates in a hospital, and infants and children in three day-care facilities of Kanazawa, Japan
The intestinal-carriage rates of i>Clostridium difficile in neonates hospitalized in the University Hospital’s Center for Perinatal and Reproductive Health and in infants and children enrolled in two day-nurseries and a kindergarten were examined. Swab samples from the floors of these facilities were also analyzed to determine the extent of environmental contamination by this organism. C. difficile was found in the stool of only one of 40 neonates during the normal 1-week stay in the hospital after delivery. The isolate from the neonate was identical to that of her mother, as determined by PCR ribotyping, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis, and toxin gene type, suggesting that the C. difficile-positive neonate acquired the organism from her mother rather than from the environment. By contrast, 47 (48.0%) of the 98 infants and children, comprising 50 enrolled in two daynurseries who were ≤3 years old and 48 enrolled in a kindergarten who were 2–5 years old, carried C. difficile. The carriage rate in infants under 2 years of age was much higher (84.4%) than in children 2 years old and older (30.3%). When analyzed according to age group, the carriage rates were 100, 75.0, 45.5, 24.0, 38.5, and 23.5% in infants and children 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 years old, respectively. The observation that several children were colonized with the same type of C. difficile strain in each day-care facility, and that the floors of day-nursery A and kindergarten C were contaminated with C. difficile strains identical to those colonizing the intestines of children enrolled in those facilities suggests that cross-infection of C. difficile among children occurs through C. difficile-carrying children or their contaminated environments. Synthesis of functional ‘polyolefins’: state of the art and remaining challenges
Functional polyolefins (i.e., polyethene or polypropene bearing functional groups) are highly desired materials, due to their beneficial surface properties. Many different pathways exist for the synthesis of these materials, each with its own advantages and drawbacks. This review focuses on those synthetic pathways that build up a polymer chain from ethene/propene and functionalised polar vinyl monomers. Despite many recent advances in the various fields of olefin polymerisation, it still remains a challenge to synthesise high molecular- weight copolymers with tuneable amounts of functional groups, preferably with consecutive insertions of polar monomers occurring in a stereoselective way. To overcome some of these challenges, polymerisation of alternative functionalised monomers is explored as well

世紀転換期に、婚姻制限よりも有効な要保護者の発生防止策として登場するのが、去勢と断種(精管切除術)である。まず去勢が、性犯罪・累犯に対する懲罰と抑止、精神薄弱者等の生殖防止と性的抑制を目的として全国的に医師により提起され、少数ながら実施される。しかし、提唱者以外賛成はなかった。H.シャープは、精管切除術を生殖防止を目的として初めて非行者に実施した。去勢論者と類似したその目的は、コミュニティの保護および社会改良、性行動の抑制等の心身の改善、コミュニティでの結婚と家庭の維持であった。精管切除術は、第二次性徴の喪失がなく、簡便で安全であるゆえに、支持層は医師や矯正事業中心から社会事業へ、男性のみから男女両性へ、全国的に拡大し、施行もされる。その拡大は、精管切除術の対象を精神薄弱者とし、精神薄弱者の種族と国家に対する脅威説の支持に対応していた。20世紀初頭のアメリカでは精管切除術に対しては、法手続き論と感情論以外に強い反対論はなかった
