Sound-Induced Flash Illusion is Resistant to Feedback Training
A single flash accompanied by two auditory beeps tends to be perceived as two flashes (Shams et al. Nature 408:788, 2000, Cogn Brain Res 14:147–152, 2002). This phenomenon is known as ‘sound-induced flash illusion.’ Previous neuroimaging studies have shown that this illusion is correlated with modulation of activity in early visual cortical areas (Arden et al. Vision Res 43(23):2469–2478, 2003; Bhattacharya et al. NeuroReport 13:1727–1730, 2002; Shams et al. NeuroReport 12(17):3849–3852, 2001, Neurosci Lett 378(2):76–81, 2005; Watkins et al. Neuroimage 31:1247–1256, 2006, Neuroimage 37:572–578, 2007; Mishra et al. J Neurosci 27(15):4120–4131, 2007). We examined how robust the illusion is by testing whether the frequency of the illusion can be reduced by providing feedback. We found that the sound-induced flash illusion was resistant to feedback training, except when the amount of monetary reward was made dependent on accuracy in performance. However, even in the latter case the participants reported that they still perceived illusory two flashes even though they correctly reported single flash. Moreover, the feedback training effect seemed to disappear once the participants were no longer provided with feedback suggesting a short-lived refinement of discrimination between illusory and physical double flashes rather than vanishing of the illusory percept. These findings indicate that the effect of sound on the perceptual representation of visual stimuli is strong and robust to feedback training, and provide further evidence against decision factors accounting for the sound-induced flash illusion
Statistical modeling of ground motion relations for seismic hazard analysis
We introduce a new approach for ground motion relations (GMR) in the
probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA), being influenced by the extreme
value theory of mathematical statistics. Therein, we understand a GMR as a
random function. We derive mathematically the principle of area-equivalence;
wherein two alternative GMRs have an equivalent influence on the hazard if
these GMRs have equivalent area functions. This includes local biases. An
interpretation of the difference between these GMRs (an actual and a modeled
one) as a random component leads to a general overestimation of residual
variance and hazard. Beside this, we discuss important aspects of classical
approaches and discover discrepancies with the state of the art of stochastics
and statistics (model selection and significance, test of distribution
assumptions, extreme value statistics). We criticize especially the assumption
of logarithmic normally distributed residuals of maxima like the peak ground
acceleration (PGA). The natural distribution of its individual random component
(equivalent to exp(epsilon_0) of Joyner and Boore 1993) is the generalized
extreme value. We show by numerical researches that the actual distribution can
be hidden and a wrong distribution assumption can influence the PSHA negatively
as the negligence of area equivalence does. Finally, we suggest an estimation
concept for GMRs of PSHA with a regression-free variance estimation of the
individual random component. We demonstrate the advantages of event-specific
GMRs by analyzing data sets from the PEER strong motion database and estimate
event-specific GMRs. Therein, the majority of the best models base on an
anisotropic point source approach. The residual variance of logarithmized PGA
is significantly smaller than in previous models. We validate the estimations
for the event with the largest sample by empirical area functions. etc
Systematic review of studies generating individual participant data on the efficacy of drugs for treating soil-transmitted helminthiases and the case for data-sharing
Preventive chemotherapy and transmission control (PCT) by mass drug administration is the cornerstone of the World Health Organization (WHO)’s policy to control soil-transmitted helminthiases (STHs) caused by Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm), Trichuris trichiura (whipworm) and hookworm species (Necator americanus and Ancylostama duodenale) which affect over 1 billion people globally. Despite consensus that drug efficacies should be monitored for signs of decline that could jeopardise the effectiveness of PCT, systematic monitoring and evaluation is seldom implemented. Drug trials mostly report aggregate efficacies in groups of participants, but heterogeneities in design complicate classical meta-analyses of these data. Individual participant data (IPD) permit more detailed analysis of drug efficacies, offering increased sensitivity to identify atypical responses potentially caused by emerging drug resistance
Exploring forest structural complexity by multi-scale segmentation of VHR imagery
Forests are complex ecological systems, characterised by multiple-scale structural and dynamical patterns which are not inferable from a system description that spans only a narrow window of resolution; this makes their investigation a difficult task using standard field sampling protocols.
We segment a QuickBird image covering a beech forest in an initial stage of old-growthness – showing, accordingly, a good degree of structural complexity – into three segmentation levels. We apply field-based diversity indices of tree size, spacing, species assemblage to quantify structural heterogeneity amongst forest regions delineated by segmentation. The aim of the study is to evaluate, on a statistical basis, the relationships between spectrally delineated image segments and observed spatial heterogeneity in forest structure, including gaps in the outer canopy. Results show that: some 45% of the segments generated at the coarser segmentation scale (level 1) are surrounded by structurally different neighbours; level 2 segments distinguish spatial heterogeneity in forest structure in about 63% of level 1 segments; level 3 image segments detect better canopy gaps, rather than differences in the spatial pattern of the investigated structural indices.
Results support also the idea of a mixture of macro and micro structural heterogeneity within the beech forest: large size populations of trees homogeneous for the examined structural indices at the coarser segmentation level, when analysed at a finer scale, are internally heterogeneous; and vice versa.
Findings from this study demonstrate that multiresolution segmentation is able to delineate scale-dependent patterns of forest structural heterogeneity, even in an initial stage of old-growth structural differentiation. This tool has therefore a potential to improve the sampling design of field surveys aimed at characterizing forest structural complexity across multiple spatio-temporal scales.L'articolo è disponibile sul sito dell'editore www.sciencedirect.co
Evaluation of Pseudo-Haptic Interactions with Soft Objects in Virtual Environments
This paper proposes a pseudo-haptic feedback method conveying simulated soft surface stiffness information through a visual interface. The method exploits a combination of two feedback techniques, namely visual feedback of soft surface deformation and control of the indenter avatar speed, to convey stiffness information of a simulated surface of a soft object in virtual environments. The proposed method was effective in distinguishing different sizes of virtual hard nodules integrated into the simulated soft bodies. To further improve the interactive experience, the approach was extended creating a multi-point pseudo-haptic feedback system. A comparison with regards to (a) nodule detection sensitivity and (b) elapsed time as performance indicators in hard nodule detection experiments to a tablet computer incorporating vibration feedback was conducted. The multi-point pseudo-haptic interaction is shown to be more time-efficient than the single-point pseudo-haptic interaction. It is noted that multi-point pseudo-haptic feedback performs similarly well when compared to a vibration-based feedback method based on both performance measures elapsed time and nodule detection sensitivity. This proves that the proposed method can be used to convey detailed haptic information for virtual environmental tasks, even subtle ones, using either a computer mouse or a pressure sensitive device as an input device. This pseudo-haptic feedback method provides an opportunity for low-cost simulation of objects with soft surfaces and hard inclusions, as, for example, occurring in ever more realistic video games with increasing emphasis on interaction with the physical environment and minimally invasive surgery in the form of soft tissue organs with embedded cancer nodules. Hence, the method can be used in many low-budget applications where haptic sensation is required, such as surgeon training or video games, either using desktop computers or portable devices, showing reasonably high fidelity in conveying stiffness perception to the user
Assessment of the Anthelmintic Efficacy of Albendazole in School Children in Seven Countries Where Soil-Transmitted Helminths Are Endemic
Soil-transmitted helminths (roundworms, whipworms and hookworms) infect millions
of children in (sub)tropical countries, resulting in malnutrition, growth
stunting, intellectual retardation and cognitive deficits. Currently, there is a
need to closely monitor anthelmintic drug efficacy and to develop standard
operating procedures, as highlighted in a World Health Organization–World
Bank meeting on “Monitoring of Drug Efficacy in Large Scale Treatment
Programs for Human Helminthiasis” in Washington DC at the end of 2007.
Therefore, we have evaluated the efficacy of a commonly used treatment against
these parasitic infections in school children in Africa, Asia and South-America
using a standardized protocol. In addition, different statistical approaches to
analyzing the data were evaluated in order to develop standardized procedures
for data analysis. The results demonstrate that the applied treatment was highly
efficacious against round- and hookworms, but not against whipworms. However,
there was large variation in efficacy across the different trials which warrants
further attention. This study also provides new insights into the statistical
analysis of efficacy data, which should be considered in future monitoring and
evaluation studies of large scale anthelmintic treatment programs. Finally, our
findings emphasize the need to update the World Health Organization recommended
efficacy threshold for the treatment of STH

What are the factors driving antimicrobial resistance? Perspectives from a public event in London, England.
BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is driven by multiple factors. Resolving the threat to human and animal health presented by drug-resistant infections remains a societal challenge that demands close collaboration between scientists and citizens. We compared current public views about key contributing factors to antimicrobial resistance with those expressed by experts.
METHODS: Overarching factors contributing to antimicrobial resistance were identified following a review of literature. The factors were then described in plain language and attached to ballot boxes at a public engagement event organised by a university. Responses to each factor were counted at the end of the event.
RESULTS: Four hundred five responses were received from 3750 visitors (11 % response rate). Nearly half of responses (192/405, 47 · 4 %) considered the misuse/overuse of antibiotics in humans as the main determinant of antimicrobial resistance. The misuse of antibiotics in animal health obtained 16 · 3 % (66/405) responses. However, the lack of quick tests to diagnose infections received 10/405 votes (2 · 47 %), and the lack of effective vaccines received one vote (0 · 25 %).
CONCLUSIONS: The majority of responses ascribed the emergence of drug-resistant infections to the misuse of antibiotics in human and animals. Suboptimal dosing, availability of diagnostics and environmental contamination were considered less influential on the development of antimicrobial resistance. The growing recognition of broader multifaceted drivers of drug resistance by experts is not yet echoed in the public mind
