    Salinity stress effect on biochemical changes in leaves of rice genotypes differing in salt tolerance

    The impact of salinity stress on biochemical changes of salt tolerant genotypes PVSB9, PVSB19, PNR381, PNR519, Iratom24 and salt sensitive genotype NS15 along with one standard check salt tolerant rice cultivar Pokkali were assessed in two factors [7 rice genotypes in combination with 5 levels of salinity (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 dS m-1)] in pot culture. The biochemical aspects studied include chlorophyll, free amino acids and soluble proteins of the selected rice genotypes in view to evaluate their response at different salinity levels. The results of biochemical changes indicated that salinity seriously affected the biosynthesis of leaf chlorophyll of all the selected genotypes at different days after transplanting (DAT). At 35, 65 and 75 DATs, chlorophyll a and chlorophyll a/b ratio increased with increase in salinity levels but total chlorophyll and chlorophyll b decreased with increasing the levels of salinity. The soluble protein and free amino acids content in leaves of seven selected rice genotypes increased significantly with increase in salinity levels at 35 DAT but at 60 and 75 DAT, this increasing pattern continued up to 6 and 9 dSm-1, respectively.ÂÂ

    We present the solutions of the Schro¨\ddot{o}dinger equation with the Hultheˊ\acute{e}n potential plus ring-shape potential for 0\ell\neq 0 states within the framework of an exponential approximation of the centrifugal potential.Solutions to the corresponding angular and radial equations are obtained in terms of special functions using the conventional Nikiforov-Uvarov method.     Trophic Dynamics of the Boreal Forests of the Kluane Region

    The trophic dynamics of the Yukon boreal forest have been under investigation at the Kluane Lake Research Station since 1973. We monitored and conducted experiments on the major species in this ecosystem, except the large mammals (for logistic reasons). The central problem has been to determine the causes of the 9 – 10 year cycle of snowshoe hares, and to achieve this we carried out several large-scale experiments manipulating food supplies, predator pressure, and soil nutrient availability to test hypotheses that food, predation, or habitat quality regulate populations. The hare cycle is driven top-down by predators, and most hares die because they are killed by predators. Predators also cause stress in female hares, and the stress response seems to be responsible for the loss of reproductive potential in the decline and low phases of the hare cycle. Many of the specialist predators and some herbivores in this ecosystem fluctuate with the hare cycle. Arctic ground squirrels do, but red squirrels do not, being linked closely to white spruce seed masting years. Small rodents fluctuate in numbers in two patterns. Red-backed voles and four species of Microtus voles have a 3 – 4 year cycle that seems to be driven by food supplies and social behaviour. Deer mice, in contrast, have fluctuated dramatically in the 38 years we have monitored them, but not cyclically. White spruce seed production varies with temperature and rainfall, but was not affected by adding nutrients in fertilizer. Global warming and reduced hare browsing in the last 20 years have helped to increase the abundance of shrubs in these forests. It will be challenging to predict how this system will change as climatic warming proceeds, because even closely related species in the same trophic level respond differently to perturbations. We recommend continued monitoring of the major species in these boreal forests.La dynamique trophique de la forêt boréale du Yukon fait l’objet d’une étude à la station de recherche du lac Kluane depuis 1973. Nous avons fait des expériences et surveillé les espèces importantes de cet écosystème, sauf en ce qui a trait aux principaux mammifères (pour des raisons de logistique). Le problème central a consisté à déterminer les causes du cycle de 9 à 10 ans du lièvre d’Amérique. Pour ce faire, nous avons effectué plusieurs expériences à grande échelle dans le cadre desquelles nous avons manipulé les disponibilités alimentaires, la pression exercée par les prédateurs et la disponibilité en nutriments dans le sol afin de mettre à l’épreuve les hypothèses selon lesquelles la nourriture, la prédation ou la qualité de l’habitat régularisent les populations. Le cycle du lièvre est dicté par les prédateurs de haut en bas, et la plupart des lièvres meurent parce qu’ils sont tués par les prédateurs. Par ailleurs, les prédateurs sont une source de stress chez les lièvres femelles, et la réaction au stress semble responsable de la perte de capacité de reproduction dans la phase du déclin et la phase basse du cycle du lièvre. Grand nombre des prédateurs spécialistes et certains herbivores de cet écosystème fluctuent en fonction du cycle du lièvre. C’est le cas du spermophile arctique, mais ce n’est pas le cas de l’écureuil roux, car il est étroitement lié aux années de paisson de graines d’épinette blanche. Le nombre de petits rongeurs fluctue en fonction de deux modèles. Le campagnol à dos roux et quatre espèces de campagnols Microtus ont un cycle de trois à quatre ans qui semble dicté par les disponibilités alimentaires et le comportement social, tandis que la souris sylvestre a connu d’énormes fluctuations pendant les 38 années qui ont fait l’objet d’une surveillance, sans toutefois afficher de cycles. La production de graines d’épinette blanche varie en fonction des températures et des chutes de pluie, mais n’a pas été influencée par l’ajout de nutriments au fertilisant. Le réchauffement planétaire et le broutage réduit des lièvres ces 20 dernières années ont aidé à accroître l’abondance d’arbustes dans ces forêts. Il sera difficile de prévoir comment ce système changera au fur et à mesure du réchauffement climatique, car même les espèces étroitement liées du même niveau trophique réagissent aux perturbations de manière différente. Nous recommandons la surveillance continue des principales espèces de ces forêts boréales

    Government Geoscience Stimulates Mineral Exploration in the Superior Province, Northern Québec

    This paper summarizes new geologic information, and highlights exploration opportunities in the northeastern part of the Superior Province since 1997, as a result of the Far North Program undertaken by Géologie Québec. The first phase of the program was a regional lake-sediment geochemical survey, where 26,000 samples were collected north of 55°N from an area of approximately 350,000 km2. The resulting database attracted many mining companies to the region and led to numerous mineral discoveries. The second phase, started in 1998, consisted of extensive geological mapping, supplemented by U-Pb geochronological work; by 2003, more than twenty, 1:250,000 mapping projects were completed. The Far North Program is now in its final phase and it will produce a comprehensive geological and metallogenic synthesis of the new data from the areas surveyed. About forty previously unknown volcano-sedimentary belts, numerous mafic-ultramafic intrusions and sixteen different mineral deposit types have been identified. La base de données ainsi constituée a attiré de nombreuses sociétés minières dans la région et de nombreuses découvertes minérales ont été faites. Amorcée en 1998, la deuxième étape a consisté en une cartographie géologique systématique, appuyée par des datations géochronologiques U-Pb. Et, en 2003, plus de 20 cartes à l'échelle 1:250 000 avaient été complétées. Le programme du Grand Nord en est maintenant à sa dernière étape, laquelle aboutira à la production d'une synthèse géologique et métallogénique à partir des nouvelles données provenant des régions étudiées. Environ une quarantaine de bandes volcano-sédimentaires, de nombreuses intrusions mafiques et ultramatiques, et seize types de gisements minéralogiques différents y ont été décrits.     The HI/OH/Recombination line survey of the inner Milky Way (THOR): data release 2 and Hi overview

    Context. The Galactic plane has been observed extensively by a large number of Galactic plane surveys from infrared to radio wavelengths at an angular resolution below 40". However, a 21 cm line and continuum survey with comparable spatial resolution is still missing. Aims. The first half of THOR data (l = 14.0 37.9, and l = 47.1 51.2, |b| < 1.25) has been published in our data release 1 paper (Beuther et al. 2016). With this data release 2 paper, we publish all the remaining spectral line data and Stokes I continuum data with high angular resolution (1000–4000) including a new H i dataset for the whole THOR survey region (l = 14.0 67.4 and |b| < 1.25). As we have published the results of OH lines and continuum emission elsewhere, we concentrate on the H i analysis in this paper. Methods. With the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in C-configuration, we observed a large portion of the first Galactic quadrant achieving an angular resolution of < 40. At L Band, the WIDAR correlator at the VLA was set to cover the 21 cm H i line, four OH transitions, a series of Hn↵ radio recombination lines (RRLs; n = 151 to 186), and eight 128 MHz wide continuum spectral windows (SPWs) simultaneously. Results. We publish all OH and RRL data from the C-configuration observations, and a new H i dataset combining VLA C+D+GBT (VLA D-configuration and GBT data are from the VLA Galactic Plane Survey, Stil et al. 2006) for the whole survey. The H i emission shows clear filamentary substructures at negative velocities with low velocity crowding. The emission at positive velocities is more smeared-out likely due to higher spatial and velocity crowding of structures at the positive velocities. Comparing to the spiral arm model of the Milky Way, the atomic gas follows the Sagittarius and Perseus Arm well but with significant material in the inter-arm regions. With the C-configuration-only H i+continuum data, we produced a H i optical depth map of the THOR areal coverage from 228 absorption spectra with the nearest-neighbor method. With this ⌧ map, we corrected the H i emission for optical depth and the derived column density is 38% higher than the column density with optically thin assumption. The total H i mass with optical depth correction in the survey region is 4.7⇥108 M, 31% more than the mass derived assuming the emission is optically thin. If we apply this 31% correction to the whole Milky Way, the total atomic gas mass would be 9.4–10.5⇥109 M. Comparing the H i with existing CO data, we find a significant increase in the atomic-to-molecular gas ration from the spiral arms to the inter-arm regions. Conclusions. The high sensitivity and resolution THOR H i dataset provides an important new window on the physical and kinematic properties of gas in the inner Galaxy. Although the optical depth we derive is a lower limit, our study shows that the optical depth correction is significant for H i column density and mass estimation. Together with the OH, RRL and continuum emission from the THOR survey, these new H i data provide the basis for high angular-resolution studies of the interstellar medium (ISM) in different phases

    I will not go, I cannot go: cultural and social limitations of disaster preparedness in Asia, Africa, and Oceania

    While much work has been invested in addressing the economic and technical basis of disaster preparedness, less effort has been directed towards understanding the cultural and social obstacles to and opportunities for disaster risk reduction. This paper presents local insights from five different national settings into the cultural and social contexts of disaster preparedness. In most cases, an early warning system was in place, but it failed to alert people to diverse environmental shocks. The research findings show that despite geographical and typological differences in these locations, the limitations of the systems were fairly similar. In Kenya, people received warnings, but from contradictory systems, whereas in the Philippines and on the island of Saipan, people did not understand the messages or take them seriously. In Bangladesh and Nepal, however, a deeper cultural and religious reasoning serves to explain disasters, and how to prevent them or find safety when they strike

    The TESS-Keck Survey. II. An Ultra-Short-Period Rocky Planet And Its Siblings Transiting The Galactic Thick-Disk Star TOI-561

    We report the discovery of TOI-561, a multiplanet system in the galactic thick disk that contains a rocky, ultra-short-period planet. This bright (V = 10.2) star hosts three small transiting planets identified in photometry from the NASA TESS mission: TOI-561 b (TOI-561.02, P = 0.44 days, Rp = 1.45 ± 0.11 R⊕), c (TOI-561.01, P = 10.8 days, Rp = 2.90 ± 0.13 R⊕), and d (TOI-561.03, P = 16.3 days, Rp = 2.32 ± 0.16 R⊕). The star is chemically ([Fe/H] = −0.41 ± 0.05, [α/Fe] = +0.23 ± 0.05) and kinematically consistent with the galactic thick-disk population, making TOI-561 one of the oldest (10 ± 3 Gyr) and most metal-poor planetary systems discovered yet. We dynamically confirm planets b and c with radial velocities from the W. M. Keck Observatory High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer. Planet b has a mass and density of 3.2 ± 0.8 M⊕ and 5.51.6+2.0{5.5}_{-1.6}^{+2.0}g cm−3, consistent with a rocky composition. Its lower-than-average density is consistent with an iron-poor composition, although an Earth-like iron-to-silicates ratio is not ruled out. Planet c is 7.0 ± 2.3 M⊕ and 1.6 ± 0.6 g cm−3, consistent with an interior rocky core overlaid with a low-mass volatile envelope. Several attributes of the photometry for planet d (which we did not detect dynamically) complicate the analysis, but we vet the planet with high-contrast imaging, ground-based photometric follow-up, and radial velocities. TOI-561 b is the first rocky world around a galactic thick-disk star confirmed with radial velocities and one of the best rocky planets for thermal emission studies

    Feedback in W94A diagnosed with Radio Recombination Lines and Models

    We present images of radio recombination lines (RRLs) at wavelengths around 18 cm from the star-forming region W49A to determine the kinematics of ionized gas in the THOR survey (The Hi/OH/Recombination line survey of the inner Milky Way) at an angular resolution of 16:08 X 13:08. The distribution of ionized gas appears to be affected by feedback processes from the star clusters inW49A. The velocity structure of the RRLs shows a complex behaviour with respect to the molecular gas. We find a shell-like distribution of ionized gas as traced by RRL emission surrounding the central cluster of OB stars in W49A. We describe the evolution of the shell with the recent feedback model code warpfield that includes the important physical processes and has previously been applied to the 30 Doradus region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The cloud structure and dynamics of W49A are in agreement with a feedbackdriven shell that is re-collapsing. The shell may have triggered star formation in other parts of W49A. We suggest that W49A is a potential candidate for star formation regulated by feedback-driven and re-collapsing shells
