Pessimistic Rescaling and Distribution Shift of Boosting Models for Impression-Aware Online Advertising Recommendation
In this paper, we provide an overview of the approach we used as team Gabibboost for the ACM RecSys Challenge 2023, organized by ShareChat and Moj. The challenge focused on predicting user activity in the online advertising setting based on impression data, in particular, predicting whether a user would install an advertised application using a high-dimensional anonymized feature vector. Our proposed solution is based on an ensemble model that combines the strengths of several machine learning sub-models, including CatBoost, LightGBM, HistGradientBoosting, and two hybrid models. Our proposal is able to harness the strengths of our models through a distribution shift postprocessing and fine-Tune the final prediction via a custom build pessimistic rescaling function. The final ensemble model allowed us to rank 1st on the academic leaderboard and 9th overall
DREB/CBF expression in wheat and barley using the stress-inducible promoters of HD-Zip I genes: impact on plant development, stress tolerance and yield
Networks of transcription factors regulate diverse physiological processes in plants to ensure that plants respond to abiotic stresses rapidly and efficiently. In this study, expression of two DREB/CBF genes, TaDREB3 and TaCBF5L, was modulated in transgenic wheat and barley, by using stressāresponsive promoters HDZIā3 and HDZIā4. The promoters were derived from the durum wheat genes encoding the Ī³āclade TFs of the HDāZip class I subfamily. The activities of tested promoters were induced by drought and cold in leaves of both transgenic species. Differences in sensitivity of promoters to drought strength were dependent on drought tolerance levels of cultivars used for generation of transgenic lines. Expression of the DREB/CBF genes under both promoters improved drought and frost tolerance of transgenic barley, and frost tolerance of transgenic wheat seedlings. Expression levels of the putative TaCBF5L downstream genes in leaves of transgenic wheat seedlings were upāregulated under severe drought, and upā or downāregulated under frost, compared to those of control seedlings. The application of TaCBF5L driven by the HDZIā4 promoter led to the significant increase of the grain yield of transgenic wheat, compared to that of the control wildātype plants, when severe drought was applied during flowering; although no yield improvements were observed when plants grew under wellāwatered conditions or moderate drought. Our findings suggest that the studied HDZI promoters combined with the DREB/CBF factors could be used in transgenic cereal plants for improvement of abiotic stress tolerance, and the reduction of negative influence of transgenes on plant development and grain yields
Overexpression of the class I homeodomain transcription factor TaHDZipIā5 increases drought and frost tolerance in transgenic wheat
Summary Characterization of the function of stressārelated genes helps to understand the mechanisms of plant responses to environmental conditions. The findings of this work defined the role of the wheat TaHDZipIā5 gene, encoding a stressāresponsive homeodomaināleucine zipper class I (HDāZip I) transcription factor, during the development of plant tolerance to frost and drought. Strong induction of TaHDZipIā5 expression by low temperatures, and the elevated TaHDZipIā5 levels of expression in flowers and early developing grains in the absence of stress, suggests that TaHDZipIā5 is involved in the regulation of frost tolerance at flowering. The TaHDZipIā5 protein behaved as an activator in a yeast transactivation assay, and the TaHDZipIā5 activation domain was localized to its Cāterminus. The TaHDZipIā5 protein homoā and heteroādimerizes with related TaHDZipIā3, and differences between DNA interactions in both dimers were specified at 3D molecular levels. The constitutive overexpression of TaHDZipIā5 in bread wheat significantly enhanced frost and drought tolerance of transgenic wheat lines with the appearance of undesired phenotypic features, which included a reduced plant size and biomass, delayed flowering and a grain yield decrease. An attempt to improve the phenotype of transgenic wheat by the application of stressāinducible promoters with contrasting properties did not lead to the elimination of undesired phenotype, apparently due to strict spatial requirements for TaHDZipIā5 overexpression
Towards Highly Adaptive Services for Mobile Computing
The heterogeneity of device capabilities, network conditions and user contexts that is associated with mobile computing has emphasized the need for more advanced forms of adaptation of Internet services. This paper presents a framework that addresses this issue by managing distributed profile information and adaptation policies, solving possible conflicts by means of an inference engine and prioritization techniques. The profile information considered in the framework is very broad, including user preferences, device and network capabilities, and user location and context. The framework has been validated by experiments on the efficiency of the proposed conflict resolution mechanism, and by the implementation of the main components of the architecture. The paper also illustrates a specific testbed application in the context of proximity marketing
How do turbidite systems behave from the hydrogeological point of view? New insights and open questions coming from an interdisciplinary work in southern Italy
Turbidite successions can behave either as aquitards or aquifers depending on their lithological and hydraulic features. In particular, post-depositional processes can increase rock permeability due to fracture development in the competent layers. Thus, at a local scale, turbidite systems warrant further detailed investigations, aimed at reconstructing reliable hydrogeological models. The objective of this work was to investigate from the hydrogeological perspective a turbiditic aquifer located in southern Italy, where several perennial and seasonal springs were detected. Considering the complex hydrodynamics of these systems at the catchment scale, to reach an optimal characterization, a multidisciplinary approach was adopted. The conceptual framework employed microbial communities as groundwater tracers, together with the physicochemical features and isotopic signature of springs and streams from water samples. Meanwhile, geophysical investigations coupled with the geological survey provided the contextualization of the hydrogeological data into the detailed geological reconstruction of the study area. This modus operandi allowed us to typify several differences among the samples, allowing identification of sources and paths of surface water and groundwater, along with diffuse groundwater outflow along streams. As a final result, a hydrogeological conceptual model was reconstructed, underlining how at a very local scale the lithologic, hydraulic, and geomorphological heterogeneity of the studied relief can lead to an improved hydrogeological conceptual model compared to that of other turbidite systems. These results open new questions about the hydrogeological behavior of turbiditic aquifers, which could be pivotal in future research. In fact, these systems could support relevant ecosystems and anthropic activities, especially where climate change will force the research of new (and probably less hydrogeologically efficient) water sources
Prevalence, Outcome, and Prevention of Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection in Neonates Born to Women With Preconception Immunity (CHILd Study)
Background. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is the leading infectious cause of congenital disabilities. We designed a prospective study to investigate the rate, outcome, and risk factors of congenital CMV (cCMV) infection in neonates born to immune women, and the potential need and effectiveness of hygiene recommendations in this population.Methods. The study was composed of 2 sequential parts: an epidemiology (part 1) and a prevention (part 2) study. Performance of part 2 depended upon a cCMV rate >0.4%. Women enrolled in part 1 did not receive hygiene recommendations. Newborns were screened by HCMV DNA testing in saliva and cCMV was confirmed by urine testing.Results. Saliva swabs were positive for HCMV DNA in 45/9661 newborns and cCMV was confirmed in 18 cases. The rate of cCMV was .19% (95% confidence interval [CI]: .11-.29%), and 3 out of 18 infants with cCMV had symptoms of CMV at birth. Age, nationality, occupation, and contact with children were similar between mothers of infected and noninfected newborns. Twin pregnancy (odds ratio [OR]: 7.2; 95% CI: 1.7-32.2; P=.037) and maternal medical conditions (OR: 3.9; 95% CI: 1.5-10.1; P= .003) appeared associated with cCMV. Given the rate of cCMV was lower than expected, the prevention part of the study was cancelled.Conclusions. Newborns from women with preconception immunity have a low rate of cCMV, which appears to be mostly due to reactivation of the latent virus. Therefore, serological screening in childbearing age would be pivotal to identify HCMV-seropositive women, whose newborns have a low risk of cCMV
Management and outcomes of gastrointestinal congenital anomalies in low, middle and high income countries: Protocol for a multicentre, international, prospective cohort study
Introduction
Congenital anomalies are the fifth leading cause of death in children <5 years of age globally, contributing an estimated half a million deaths per year. Very limited literature exists from low and middle income countries (LMICs) where most of these deaths occur. The Global PaedSurg Research Collaboration aims to undertake the first multicentre, international, prospective cohort study of a selection of common congenital anomalies comparing management and outcomes between low, middle and high income countries (HICs) globally.
Methods and analysis
The Global PaedSurg Research Collaboration consists of surgeons, paediatricians, anaesthetists and allied healthcare professionals involved in the surgical care of children globally. Collaborators will prospectively collect observational data on consecutive patients presenting for the first time, with one of seven common congenital anomalies (oesophageal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, intestinal atresia, gastroschisis, exomphalos, anorectal malformation and Hirschsprung''s disease). Patient recruitment will be for a minimum of 1 month from October 2018 to April 2019 with a 30-day post-primary intervention follow-up period. Anonymous data will be collected on patient demographics, clinical status, interventions and outcomes using REDCap. Collaborators will complete a survey regarding the resources and facilities for neonatal and paediatric surgery at their centre. The primary outcome is all-cause in-hospital mortality. Secondary outcomes include the occurrence of postoperative complications. Chi-squared analysis will be used to compare mortality between LMICs and HICs. Multilevel, multivariate logistic regression analysis will be undertaken to identify patient-level and hospital-level factors affecting outcomes with adjustment for confounding factors.
Ethics and dissemination
At the host centre, this study is classified as an audit not requiring ethical approval. All participating collaborators have gained local approval in accordance with their institutional ethical regulations. Collaborators will be encouraged to present the results locally, nationally and internationally. The results will be submitted for open access publication in a peer reviewed journal
