    Enhancement of vaccinia virus based oncolysis with histone deacetylase inhibitors

    Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDI) dampen cellular innate immune response by decreasing interferon production and have been shown to increase the growth of vesicular stomatitis virus and HSV. As attenuated tumour-selective oncolytic vaccinia viruses (VV) are already undergoing clinical evaluation, the goal of this study is to determine whether HDI can also enhance the potency of these poxviruses in infection-resistant cancer cell lines. Multiple HDIs were tested and Trichostatin A (TSA) was found to potently enhance the spread and replication of a tumour selective vaccinia virus in several infection-resistant cancer cell lines. TSA significantly decreased the number of lung metastases in a syngeneic B16F10LacZ lung metastasis model yet did not increase the replication of vaccinia in normal tissues. The combination of TSA and VV increased survival of mice harbouring human HCT116 colon tumour xenografts as compared to mice treated with either agent alone. We conclude that TSA can selectively and effectively enhance the replication and spread of oncolytic vaccinia virus in cancer cells. © 2010 MacTavish et al

    We study the quantum properties of the polarization of the light produced in type II spontaneous parametric down-conversion in the framework of a multi-mode model valid in any gain regime. We show that the the microscopic polarization entanglement of photon pairs survives in the high gain regime (multi-photon regime), in the form of nonclassical correlation of all the Stokes operators describing polarization degrees of freedom

    [EN] Keeping up with bandwidth requirements in next generation short- and long-reach optical communication systems will require migrating from simple modulation formats such as on-off keying to more advanced formats such as quaternary phase-shift keying (QPSK). In this paper, we report the first demonstration of QPSK signal generation in the O-band using a silicon dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DD-MZM).     Quantum and Classical Noise in Practical Quantum Cryptography Systems based on polarization-entangled photons

    Quantum-cryptography key distribution (QCKD) experiments have been recently reported using polarization-entangled photons. However, in any practical realization, quantum systems suffer from either unwanted or induced interactions with the environment and the quantum measurement system, showing up as quantum and, ultimately, statistical noise. In this paper, we investigate how ideal polarization entanglement in spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) suffers quantum noise in its practical implementation as a secure quantum system, yielding errors in the transmitted bit sequence. Because all SPDC-based QCKD schemes rely on the measurement of coincidence to assert the bit transmission between the two parties, we bundle up the overall quantum and statistical noise in an exhaustive model to calculate the accidental coincidences. This model predicts the quantum-bit error rate and the sifted key and allows comparisons between different security criteria of the hitherto proposed QCKD protocols, resulting in an objective assessment of performances and advantages of different systems.Comment: Rev Tex Style, 2 columns, 7 figures, (a modified version will appear on PRA

    Ultra-Low Threshold cw Lasing in Tensile Strained GeSn Microdisk Cavities

    GeSn is proven as a good candidate to achieve CMOS-compatible laser sources on silicon. Lasing demonstrations in this alloy were based on directness of the band structure, this directness being increased with increasing the Sn content above 8 at.%. These past few years the research were consequently focused on incorporating the highest Sn content as possible to achieve high directness and high temperature laser operation. This unfortunately results is increased threshold. In this contribution we discuss the advantages in combining tensile strain engineering with lower Sn content alloys. This approach is motivated by the higher material quality in lower Sn content. The case with Sn content as small as 5.4 at.% Sn will be discussed. The alloy is initially compressively strained, and exhibits an indirect band gap that is turned to direct by applying tensile strain. A specific technology based on transfer On Insulator stressor layer on metal was developed to address strain engineering, thermal cooling and defective interface with the Ge-VS. This led to lasing in Ge0.95Sn0.05 microdisk cavities with dramatically reduced thresholds, by two order of magnitude, as compared to the case with high Sn alloys and as consequence enables cw operation

    Collective coherence in planar semiconductor microcavities

    Semiconductor microcavities, in which strong coupling of excitons to confined photon modes leads to the formation of exciton-polariton modes, have increasingly become a focus for the study of spontaneous coherence, lasing, and condensation in solid state systems. This review discusses the significant experimental progress to date, the phenomena associated with coherence which have been observed, and also discusses in some detail the different theoretical models that have been used to study such systems. We consider both the case of non-resonant pumping, in which coherence may spontaneously arise, and the related topics of resonant pumping, and the optical parametric oscillator.Comment: 46 pages, 12 figure

    Water quality is a poor predictor of recreational hotspots in England

    Maintaining and improving water quality is key to the protection and restoration of aquatic ecosystems, which provide important benefits to society. In Europe, the Water Framework Directive (WFD) defines water quality based on a set of biological, hydro-morphological and chemical targets, and aims to reach good quality conditions in all river bodies by the year 2027. While recently it has been argued that achieving these goals will deliver and enhance ecosystem services, in particular recreational services, there is little empirical evidence demonstrating so. Here we test the hypothesis that good water quality is associated with increased utilization of recreational services, combining four surveys covering walking, boating, fishing and swimming visits, together with water quality data for all water bodies in eight River Basin Districts (RBDs) in England. We compared the percentage of visits in areas of good water quality to a set of null models accounting for population density, income, age distribution, travel distance, public access, and substitutability. We expect such association to be positive, at least for fishing (which relies on fish stocks) and swimming (with direct contact to water). We also test if these services have stronger association with water quality relative to boating and walking alongside rivers, canals or lakeshores. In only two of eight RBDs (Northumbria and Anglian) were both criteria met (positive association, strongest for fishing and swimming) when comparing to at least one of the null models. This conclusion is robust to variations in dataset size. Our study suggests that achieving the WFD water quality goals may not enhance recreational ecosystem services, and calls for further empirical research on the connection between water quality and ecosystem services
