    A Neutrinophilic 2HDM as a UV Completion for the Inverse Seesaw Mechanism

    In Neutrinophilic Two Higgs Doublet Models, Dirac neutrino masses are obtained by forbidding a Majorana mass term for the right-handed neutrinos via a symmetry. We study a variation of such models in which that symmetry is taken to be a local U(1), leading naturally to the typical Lagrangian of the inverse seesaw scenario. The presence of a new gauge boson and of an extended scalar sector result in a rich phenomenology, including modifications to Z, Higgs and kaon decays as well as to electroweak precision parameters, and a pseudoscalar associated to the breaking of lepton number.Comment: 21 pages, 2 figures, matches the published version in JHE

    Evaluating the miR-302b and miR-145 expression in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

    Background: MicroRNAs are involved in key cellular processes regulating, and their misregulation is linked to cancer. The miR-302-367 cluster is exclusively expressed in embryonic stem and carcinoma cells. This cluster also promotes cell reprogramming and stemness process. In contrast, miR-145 is mostly regarded as a tumor suppressor, where it regulates cellular functions such as cell division, differentiation, and apoptosis. By suppressing the main pluripotency factors (OCT4, SOX2, MYC and KLF4), miR-145 silences the self-renewal program in ESCs. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to find a potential link between the expression level of hsa-miR-302b and hsa-miR-145 with tumor vs. non-tumor as well as high-grade vs. low-grade states of the esophageal tissue samples. Methods: A total number of 40 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples of esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma (ESCC) were obtained, and the tumor and marginal non-tumor areas delineated and punched off by an expert pathologist. Total RNA was extracted with Trizol, and cDNA synthesized using the miRCURY LNA™ Universal RT microRNA PCR Kit. Real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assays were performed using specific LNA-primers and SYBR Green master mix. Results: The expression level of miR-302b failed to show any significant difference, neither between tumor and their non-tumor counterparts, nor among tumors with different grades of malignancies (P > 0.05). In contrast, miR-145 was significantly down regulated in all grades of tumor samples (P 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our data revealed a significant down-regulation of miR-145 in ESCC tissue samples. Based on our ROC curve analysis data (AUC = 0.74, P < 0.001) miR-145 could be regarded as a potential tumor marker for diagnosis of esophageal cancer. © 2015, Academy of Medical Sciences of I.R.     On the Viability of Minimal Neutrinophilic Two-Higgs-Doublet Models

    We study the constraints that electroweak precision data can impose, after the discovery of the Higgs boson by the LHC, on neutrinophilic two-Higgs-doublet models which comprise one extra SU(2)×U(1)SU(2)\times U(1) doublet and a new symmetry, namely a spontaneously broken Z2\mathbb{Z}_2 or a softly broken global U(1)U(1). In these models the extra Higgs doublet, via its very small vacuum expectation value, is the sole responsible for neutrino masses. We find that the model with a Z2\mathbb{Z}_2 symmetry is basically ruled out by electroweak precision data, even if the model is slightly extended to include extra right-handed neutrinos, due to the presence of a very light scalar. While the other model is still perfectly viable, the parameter space is considerably constrained by current data, specially by the TT parameter.     Gaussian Copula Mixed Models with Non-Ignorable Missing Outcomes

    This paper is concerned with the analysis of mixed data with ordinal and continuous outcomes with the possibility of non - ignorable missing outcomes . A copula-based regression model is proposed that accounts for associations between ordinal and continuous outcomes . Our approach entails specifying underlying latent variables for the mixed outcomes to indicate the latent mechanisms which generate the ordinal and continuous variables . Maximum likelihood estimation of our model parameters is implemented using standard software such as function nlminb in R . Results of simulations concern the relative biases of parameter estimates of joint and marginal models using data with non-ignorable outcomes . The proposed methodology is illustrated using a medical data obtained from an observational study on women with three correlated responses , an ordinal response of osteoporosis of the spine and two continuous responses of body mass index and waistline . The effect of the amount of total body calcium (Ca) , job status (Job) , type of dwelling (Ta) and age on all responses are investigated simultaneously

    Deep and Superficial Cervical Flexor Muscles Strength in Female Students with Forward Head Posture Compared to Normal Group Using Electromyography and Pressure Bio- Feedback Device

    Abstract: Background & Aims: Forward head posture deformity is a disorder in head weight balance condition leading to some alterations in cervical muscles, strength. This research aimed to determine the strength of deep and superficial cervical flexor muscles in female students with forward head posture compared to the normal group. Methods: From the total of 724 female students in Shahid Bahonar University taking physical education I course, 60 students were enrolled into the two equal groups of with and without forward head posture. For selecting subjects, Posture screen test, New York test and lateral photography in stand position were used. Pressure Biofeedback device was applied to investigate the strength of cervical muscles during two craniocervical flexion test (CCFT) and combination test. To ensure proper performance of tests, Surface Electromyography was used. Results: The two groups showed significant difference in deep cervical muscles strengths (P=0.002), while there was no significant difference between the two groups in superficial flexor muscles strength (P=0.803). Conclusion: Since activation of superficial cervical flexor muscles leads to deep cervical flexor muscles inactivity, designing training programs involving just deep flexor muscles seems to be essential in individuals with forward head posture deformity.     Synthesis of PANi nanoarrays anchored on 2D BiOCl nanoplates for photodegradation of Congo Red in visible light region

    Photocatalytic processes have attained considerable attention of late years, especially for environmental remediation. Despite extensive research in this area, the need for safer, more efficient, and cost-effective processes has encouraged researchers to develop novel photocatalysis. However, the low active surface area and narrow bandgap limit their photocatalytic performances. In the present research, the 2D BiOCl sheets were successfully synthesized by a new hydrothermal method and decorated by PANi nanoarrays through in-situ oxidative polymerization of aniline. The UV�vis diffuse-re�ectance and photoluminescence spectroscopy revealed the synergistic effects between PANi nanoarrays and 2D BiOCl by enhancing the absorption in the visible light region and reduction of bandgap down to 2.9 eV. Furthermore, the morphology analysis showed the proper decoration of PANi nanoarrays on 2D BiOCl nanoplates. The synthesized nanocomposite with different weight loadings of PANi was taken to evaluate the decolorization efficiency of it. The result exhibited an optimum value of 88.35 at 60 min irradiation under visible light in the photodegradation of Congo Red (CR). Moreover, the probable photocatalytic mechanism for degradation of CR by PANi/BiCOl photocatalyst was proposed based on the scavenger experiments. The outcomes indicated that the PANi promoted the absorption intensity of the pure BiOCl in the visible region. To that, the well-arranged array and considerably high specific surface area of PANi could encourage the transfer of electrons witch generated by the photo to 2D BiOCl substrate and repel the recombination of electron-hole pairs. © 2019 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistr

    Prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Infections (Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Trichomonas vaginalis and Human Papillomavirus) in Female Attendees of a Sexually Transmitted Diseases Clinic in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

    Background: Epidemiological data suggest that the prevalence of syphilis, gonorrhea and trichomoniasis has increased in both urban and rural areas of Mongolia. These data are primarily substantiated by notifications of cases of clinically apparent disease in both rural and urban areas, plus laboratory diagnoses from the AIDS/STD Reference Center,Ulaanbaatar. In the past 5 years, however, there has been a marked decline in the total number of patients being screened for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). An assessment of true prevalence of STIs in a female population attending an urban sexually transmitted diseases (STD) clinic was therefore commenced. Methods: Consecutivewomen attending an STD clinic in Ulaanbaatar had genital samples collected by the insertion and immediate removal of a tampon, which was then tested for the presence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae , Chlamydia trachomatis, human papillomavirus (HPV) and Trichomonas vaginalis , using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification. Results: A total of 110 women were studied (mean age 26.7 years). Overall, 58 (53%) patients had one or more pathogens identified; 43 (39%) had a single pathogen, while 15 (14%) had mixed pathogens. C. trachomatis was found in 15 (14%), N. gonorrhoeae in 12 (11%), T. vaginalis in nine (8%) and HPV in 39 (36%). Among the 39 HPV-positive patients, oncogenic genotypes (16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52) were found in 17 (44%) patients. Conclusions: Sexually transmitted infections as defined by PCR were common, and found in 53%of female attendees of an urban STD clinic in Mongolia. As infections with conventional STIs increase the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission, it is imperative that strategies be introduced to reduce the prevalence of STIs. Furthermore, detection of oncogenic HPV was common, indicating that it is vital that a strategy to reduce cervical cancer such as a pre-cancer cervical cytology screening program also be introduced

    Majorana versus Dirac Constraints on the Neutrino Dipole Moments

    Massive neutrinos are guaranteed to have nonzero electromagnetic moments and, since there are at least three neutrino species, these dipole moments define a matrix. Here, we estimate the current upper bounds on all independent neutrino electromagnetic moments, concentrating on Earth-bound experiments and measurements with solar neutrinos, including the very recent results reported by XENONnT. We make no simplifying assumptions and compare the hypotheses that neutrinos are Majorana fermions or Dirac fermions. In particular, we fully explore constraints in the Dirac-neutrino parameter space. Majorana and Dirac neutrinos are different; for example, the upper bounds on the magnitudes of the elements of the dipole moment matrix are weaker for Dirac neutrinos, relative to Majorana neutrinos. The potential physics reach of next-generation experiments also depends on the nature of the neutrino. We find that a next-generation experiment two orders of magnitude more sensitive to the neutrino electromagnetic moments via νμ\nu_{\mu} elastic scattering may discover that the neutrino electromagnetic moments are nonzero if the neutrinos are Dirac fermions. Instead, if the neutrinos are Majorana fermions, such a discovery is ruled out by existing solar neutrino data, unless there are more than three light neutrinos.Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures, 2 table

    Cerebrospinal Fluid Inflammatory Biomarkers Reflect Clinical Severity in Huntington's Disease

    INTRODUCTION: Immune system activation is involved in Huntington’s disease (HD) pathogenesis and biomarkers for this process could be relevant to study the disease and characterise the therapeutic response to specific interventions. We aimed to study inflammatory cytokines and microglial markers in the CSF of HD patients. METHODS: CSF TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, YKL-40, chitotriosidase, total tau and neurofilament light chain (NFL) from 23 mutation carriers and 14 healthy controls were assayed. RESULTS: CSF TNF-α and IL-1β were below the limit of detection. Mutation carriers had higher YKL-40 (p = 0.003), chitotriosidase (p = 0.015) and IL-6 (p = 0.041) than controls. YKL-40 significantly correlated with disease stage (p = 0.007), UHDRS total functional capacity score (r = -0.46, p = 0.016), and UHDRS total motor score (r = 0.59, p = 4.5*10−4) after adjustment for age. CONCLUSION: YKL-40 levels in CSF may, after further study, come to have a role as biomarkers for some aspects of HD. Further investigation is needed to support our exploratory findings
