    Antioxidants in the Management of Fluoride Induced Neural Oxidative Stress in Developing Rats

    Fluoride (F) is highly electronegative anion with cumulative toxic effects, from prolonged ingestion that can lead to the pathogenesis known as fluorosis, a condition especially persistent in third world countries, where populations have little choice as to the main source of F-contaminated drinking. In recent times many neurological problems among children are being addressed in endemic areas. Thereby reasons for the neurotoxicity have to be explicated thoroughly. In this study premated Wistar albino rats were exposed to 50 and 150 ppm fluoride in drinking water during gestation and pups born to them were used to analyze the extent of neurotoxicity imposed in discrete brain areas. Dose dependent toxicity was evident in different brain regions and fluoride exposure has significantly enhanced the levels of malondialdehyde (P>0.05), glutathione (P>0.05) and decreased the activities of superoxide dismutase (P>0.05), catalase (P>0.05), glutathione peroxidase (P>0.05) and glutathione- S-transferase (P>0.05). Alterations were region specific and oral supplementation of dietary antioxidants viz., vitamin-C (20mg), vitamin-E (400.g), zinc (200.g) and selenium (40.g) not only inhibited oxidative stress but also enhanced the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Thereby supplementation of antioxidants to toxicated animals significantly overcame toxic burden imposed by fluoride and therefore may be a therapeutic strategy for fluorotic victims

    Frenet force analysis in performance evaluation of railroad vehicle systems

    A data-driven science approach, based on integrating nonlinear multibody system (MBS) formulations and new geometric concepts, is used in this paper to compare the performance of two widely used railroad bogies: the three-piece bogie and the Y25 bogie. MBS algorithms are used to solve the bogie nonlinear differential/algebraic equations (DAEs) to determine the bogie motion trajectories. To have a better understanding of the bogie dynamic behavior, a distinction is made between the geometry of actual motion trajectories (AMT) and the track geometry. The AMT curves are described using the motion-dependent Frenet-Euler angles, referred to as Frenet bank, curvature, and vertical development angles, which differ from their counterparts used in the description of the track geometry. In particular, the Frenet bank angle defines the super-elevation of the AMT curve osculating plane, referred to as the motion plane, distinguishing this Frenet super-elevation from the fixed-in-time track super-elevation. The paper explains the difference between the lateral track plane force balance used in practice to determine the balance speed and the Frenet force balance which is based on recorded motion trajectories. Computer simulations of bogies travelling on a track, consisting of tangent, spiral, and curve sections are performed with particular attention given to the deviations of the AMT curves from the track centerline. The results obtained in this study demonstrate the dependence of the AMT curve geometry on the wheelset forward motion, highlighting the limitations of tests performed using roller test rigs which do not allow longitudinal wheelset motion

    Percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation alters electrophysiologic substrate

    BACKGROUND: Percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation (PPVI) is first‐line therapy for some congenital heart disease patients with right ventricular outflow tract dysfunction. The hemodynamics improvements after PPVI are well documented, but little is known about its effects on the electrophysiologic substrate. The objective of this study is to assess the short‐ and medium‐term electrophysiologic substrate changes and elucidate postprocedure arrhythmias. METHODS AND RESULTS: A retrospective chart review of patients undergoing PPVI from May 2010 to April 2015 was performed. A total of 106 patients underwent PPVI; most commonly these patients had tetralogy of Fallot (n=59, 55%) and pulmonary insufficiency (n=60, 57%). The median follow‐up time was 28 months (7‐63 months). Pre‐PPVI, 25 patients (24%) had documented arrhythmias: nonsustained ventricular tachycardia (NSVT) (n=9, 8%), frequent premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) (n=6, 6%), and atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF/AFL) (n=10, 9%). Post‐PPVI, arrhythmias resolved in 4 patients who had NSVT (44%) and 5 patients who had PVCs (83%). New arrhythmias were seen in 16 patients (15%): 7 NSVT, 8 PVCs, and 1 AF/AFL. There was resolution at medium‐term follow‐up in 6 (86%) patients with new‐onset NSVT and 7 (88%) patients with new‐onset PVCs. There was no difference in QRS duration pre‐PPVI, post‐PPVI, and at medium‐term follow‐up (P=0.6). The median corrected QT lengthened immediately post‐PPVI but shortened significantly at midterm follow‐up (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: PPVI reduced the prevalence of NSVT. The majority of postimplant arrhythmias resolve by 6 months of follow‐up

    Low Speed Estimation of Sensorless DTC Induction Motor Drive Using MRAS with Neuro Fuzzy Adaptive Controller

    This paper presents a closed loop Model Reference Adaptive system (MRAS) observer with artificial intelligent Nuero fuzzy controller (NFC) as the adaptation technique to mitigate the low speed estimation issues and to improvise the performance of the Sensorless Direct Torque Controlled (DTC) Induction Motor Drives (IMD). Rotor flux MRAS and reactive power MRAS with NFC is explored and detailed analysis is carried out for low speed estimation. Comparative analysis between rotor flux MRAS and reactive power MRAS with PI as well as NFC as adaptive controller is performed and results are presented in this paper. The comparative analysis among these four speed estimation methods shows that reactive power MRAS with NFC as adaptation mechanism shows reduced speed estimation error and actual speed error at steady state operating conditions when the drive is subjected to low speed operation. Simulation carried out using MATLAB-Simulink software to validate the performance of the drive especially at low speeds with rated and variable load conditions

    Using Sat solvers for synchronization issues in partial deterministic automata

    We approach the task of computing a carefully synchronizing word of minimum length for a given partial deterministic automaton, encoding the problem as an instance of SAT and invoking a SAT solver. Our experimental results demonstrate that this approach gives satisfactory results for automata with up to 100 states even if very modest computational resources are used.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure

    Antimalarials and Phytotoxins from Botryosphaeria dothidea Identified from a Seed of Diseased Torreya taxifolia

    The metabolic pathways in the apicoplast organelle of Plasmodium parasites are similar to those in plastids in plant cells and are suitable targets for malaria drug discovery. Some phytotoxins released by plant pathogenic fungi have been known to target metabolic pathways of the plastid; thus, they may also serve as potential antimalarial drug leads. An EtOAc extract of the broth of the endophyte Botryosphaeria dothidea isolated from a seed collected from a Torreya taxifolia plant with disease symptoms, showed in vitro antimalarial and phytotoxic activities. Bioactivity-guided fractionation of the extract afforded a mixture of two known isomeric phytotoxins, FRT-A and flavipucine (or their enantiomers, sapinopyridione and (-)-flavipucine), and two new unstable γ-lactam alkaloids dothilactaenes A and B. The isomeric mixture of phytotoxins displayed strong phytotoxicity against both a dicot and a monocot and moderate cytotoxicity against a panel of cell lines. Dothilactaene A showed no activity. Dothilactaene B was isolated from the active fraction, which showed moderate in vitro antiplasmodial activity with high selectivity index. In spite of this activity, its instability and various other biological activities shown by related compounds would preclude it from being a viable antimalarial lead

    A study on wear evaluation of railway wheels based on multibody dynamics and wear computation

    The wear evolution of railway wheels is a very important issue in railway engineering. In the past, the reprofiling intervals of railway vehicle steel wheels have been scheduled according to designers' experience. Today, more reliable and accurate tools in predicting wheel wear evolution and wheelset lifetime can be used in order to achieve economical and safety benefits. In this work, a computational tool that is able to predict the evolution of the wheel profiles for a given railway system, as a function of the distance run, is presented. The strategy adopted consists of using a commercial multibody software to study the railway dynamic problem and a purpose-built code for managing its pre- and post-processing data in order to compute the wear. The tool is applied here to realistic operation scenarios in order to assess the effect of some service conditions on the wheel wear progression

    Finite Element Simulation of Dense Wire Packings

    A finite element program is presented to simulate the process of packing and coiling elastic wires in two- and three-dimensional confining cavities. The wire is represented by third order beam elements and embedded into a corotational formulation to capture the geometric nonlinearity resulting from large rotations and deformations. The hyperbolic equations of motion are integrated in time using two different integration methods from the Newmark family: an implicit iterative Newton-Raphson line search solver, and an explicit predictor-corrector scheme, both with adaptive time stepping. These two approaches reveal fundamentally different suitability for the problem of strongly self-interacting bodies found in densely packed cavities. Generalizing the spherical confinement symmetry investigated in recent studies, the packing of a wire in hard ellipsoidal cavities is simulated in the frictionless elastic limit.     210Po Log-normal distribution in human urines: Survey from Central Italy people

    The death in London of the former secret service agent Alexander Livtinenko on 23 November 2006 generally attracted the attention of the public to the rather unknown radionuclide 210Po. This paper presents the results of a monitoring programme of 210Po background levels in the urines of noncontaminated people living in Central Italy (near the Republic of S. Marino). The relationship between age, sex, years of smoking, number of cigarettes per day, and 210Po concentration was also studied. The results indicated that the urinary 210Po concentration follows a surprisingly perfect Log-normal distribution. Log 210Po concentrations were positively correlated to age (p < 0.0001), number of daily smoked cigarettes (p = 0.006), and years of smoking (p = 0.021), and associated to sex (p = 0.019). Consequently, this study provides upper reference limits for each sub-group identified by significantly predictive variables
