Accumulation and partitioning of total phenols in two varieties of Labisia pumila Benth. under manipulation of greenhouse irradiance

    Get PDF
Two varieties of Labisia pumila (var. pumila and alata) were exposed to four levels of greenhouse irradiance (100, 70, 50, 30% of the incoming radiation (IR); equivalent to respective 670, 630, 470, 240 μmol m-2 s -1) in a 2-factorial Randomized Complete Block Design trial with the aim to determine the existence of varietal preferences in total phenols (TP) accumulation and their distribution to different organs (leaf, stem, root) due to manipulation in irradiance levels. TP were determined according to Folin-Ciocalteu method and results expressed in mg Gallic acid g-1 dry weight (DW). Total phenolic content in red var. alata consistently recorded lower values (p≤0.0001) than green var. pumila when exposed to high irradiance (100-70% IR) by 4.5-6.6%. Reducing irradiance to 50% IR; however, increased TP in red higher than green var. by 39.2% (10.96 vs. 7.87 mg GAE g-1 DW) due to marked increase (p≤0.0001) in phenols partitioning to the leaf of red var. compared to green var. (4.6 vs. 3.0 mg g"). Partitioning of phenols to the leaf in red var. alata, although kept increasing (6.5% over green var.), did not continue to enhance plant TP with further decrease in irradiance to 30% IR. Instead TP partitioning to the stem and root in green var. pumila exceeded substantially over red var. alata by 11.8-18.4%, respectively, implying there are varietal preferences between var. pumila and alata in terms of TP accumulation and partitioning related to varying levels of irradiance. Although both varieties are shade loving, var. alata was more sensitive to high irradiance than var. pumila in accumulation of TP in the plants and that manipulation of irradiance in controlled environment agriculture was able to enhance partitioning of phenols to different parts or organs of Labisia pumila for potential niche production of plant parts

Comparison of mean temperature taken between commercial and prototype thermal sensor in estimating mean temperature of oil palm fresh fruit bunches

    Get PDF
Thermal imaging is widely utilized in agricultural applications such as examining plant physiology, yield prediction, irrigation scheduling, bruises and pathogen determination in fruits and vegetables. There is a need for a cost effective thermal device for this wide range of applications. In this study, a low-cost prototype thermal device was used to measure the temperature of FFBs at three maturity levels, that are under-ripe, ripe and over-ripe. The experiment was repeated using a commercial thermal camera. Then, the mean temperature obtained from both the prototype and commercial thermal sensors was compared. Our results showed the prototype thermal device is capable of estimating the mean temperature of oil palm FFBs with the values analogous to the mean temperature from commercial thermal camera with R2 = 0.71

    Get PDF
Processing analog signal often involves analog multiplier and the multiplier is part of system on chip (SoC). Designing such system with a low power consumption is crucial nowadays. It is very important to increase the system battery lifetime. The design also must be smaller in size. In order to reduce the power consumption of the multiplier, an architecture that require smaller current must be designed and the approach is to use a design that is able to function at a low voltage supply. This project has designed the analog multiplier with a low power consumption using Silterra 130 nm Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technology. A four quadrant technique is applied in the design. The scaling of transistor will help in reducing the size of the analog multiplier, and the proposed circuit architecture has produced a compact multiplier. Cadence electronic design automation (EDA) Tools is used to design the circuit. The schematic, layout, physical verification and parasitic extraction with post layout simulation are done to verify the multiplier circuit is functioning. The analog multiplier is operated with 1.2 V voltage supply and the power consumption is 98 μW. At 1 V, the power consumption is 32 μW. The total area for the design is 99 μm²

Islamophobia and Proximities to Whiteness: Organizing Outside of the Brown Muslim Subject

    Get PDF
The existing Islamophobia 1 literature has come to illustrate how the Muslim subject “can at a moment’s notice be erected as [an] object of supervision and discipline” ( Morey and Yaqin 2011 : 5–6). In the popular imagination, Muslimhood 2 has come to stand for an undifferentiated culturally alien oriental subject defined through the prism of racialized violence and irrationality. Although much of the anti-Islamophobia efforts – academic and community-based – work to combat the reductiveness of a universalized Muslim figure , these efforts tend to uncritically take up the brown Muslim figure as the starting point of inquiry, thereby further reifying the homogenizing racialization of dominant discourses. This article opens up the possibilities to expand thinking on the lifeworld of Islamophobia by addressing the erasure that happens with this homogenizing approach to Islamophobia. In particular, we consider the dialogical nature between the operational life of Islamophobia and the differing proximities to whiteness our intersectional subject positions make available. And in turn, how these availabilities come to shape the experience of Islamophobia is a prime focus of analysis. The authors ask: how does the systemic demarcation of Muslim subjectivity, across racial, ethnic, class, regional, and ideological lines, interact with how Islamophobia is experienced and operationalized? Leveraging an auto-ethnographic approach, we provide first-person narratives of Islamophobic encounters from our respective geopolitical and social locations to deconstruct and delineate an intersectional understanding of Islamophobia

Semi-vitrified porous kyanite mullite ceramics: Young modulus, microstructure and pore size evolution

    Get PDF
Microporous porcelain formulations are successfully carried out through sintering processing. During the thermal treatment of ceramic products, it was found that the addition of kyanite together with ϕ- and γ-Al2O3 allowed to enhance interconnected pores network with micrometric size from 0.1 to 9 µm in a semi-vitrified composite. Between 1200 and 1350 °C, the mullitization of kyanite hindered the extension of vitrification and the growth of acicular mullite from the transformation of metakaolin. The main pores size decreased from 4.33 to 1.54 µm for the formulation containing 32 wt% of kyanite. In this interval the specific pore area increased from 0.64 to 8.75 m2 g−1 due to the total conversion of the kyanite to fibrous and acicular mullite that reduced the voids provided by the earlier mullitization. The improvement in the mullitization without extensive vitrification and grain growth and the reduction of the pores size with the increase in the specific pore area contributed to the formation of a microporous matrix with the Young's modulus increased from 7 to > 20 GPa. The microstructure of the microporous porcelain, their specific pore area and pores size as well as the interconnection of pores was found innovative for the applications in the field of engineering filtration where high mechanical strength, strain, stiffness and pressure resistance are required
