Disjoint Covers in Replicated Heterogeneous Arrays
Reconfigurable chips are fabricated with redundant elements that can be used to replace the faulty elements. The fault cover problem consists of finding an assignment of redundant elements to the faulty elements such that all of the faults are repaired. In reconfigurable chips that consist of arrays of elements, redundant elements are configured as spare rows and spare columns.
This paper considers the problem in which a chip contains several replicates of a heterogeneous array, one or more sets of spare rows, and one or more sets of spare columns. Each set of spare rows is identical to the set of rows in the array, and each set of spare columns is identical to the set of columns in the array. Specifically, an ith spare row can only be used to replace an ith row of an array, and similarly with spare columns. Repairing the chip reduces to finding a cover for the faults in each of the arrays. These covers must be disjoint; that is, a particular spare row or spare column can be used in the cover of at most one array. Results are presented for three fault cover problems that arise under these conditions
Breaking Boundaries in Computing in Undergraduate Courses
An important question in undergraduate curricula is that of incorporating computing into STEM courses for majors and non-majors alike. What does it mean to teach “computing” in this context? What are some of the benefits and challenges for students and instructors in such courses? This paper contributes to this important dialog by describing three undergraduate courses that have been developed and taught at Harvey Mudd College and Loyola Marymount University. The Languages Spoken in the Water Body (or the Biological Role of Cyanobacterial Toxins)
Although intensification of toxic cyanobacterial blooms over the last decade is a matter of growing concern due to bloom impact on water quality, the biological role of most of the toxins produced is not known. In this critical review we focus primarily on the biological role of two toxins, microcystins and cylindrospermopsin, in inter- and intra-species communication and in nutrient acquisition. We examine the experimental evidence supporting some of the dogmas in the field and raise several open questions to be dealt with in future research. We do not discuss the health and environmental implications of toxin presence in the water body
From the Kondo Regime to the Mixed-Valence Regime in a Single-Electron Transistor
We demonstrate that the conductance through a single-electron transistor at
low temperature is in quantitative agreement with predictions of the
equilibrium Anderson model. When an unpaired electron is localized within the
transistor, the Kondo effect is observed. Tuning the unpaired electron's energy
toward the Fermi level in nearby leads produces a cross-over between the Kondo

Transmission Phase of a Quantum Dot with Kondo Correlation Near the Unitary Limit
The complex transmission amplitude -- both magnitude and phase -- of a
quantum dot (QD) with Kondo correlation was measured near the unitary limit.
Contrary to previous phase measurements, performed far from this limit [Ji et
al., Science 290, 779 (2000)], the transmission phase was observed to evolve
linearly over a range of about 1.5 pi when the Fermi energy was scanned through
a Kondo pair -- a pair of spin degenerate energy levels. Moreover, the phase in
Coulomb blockade (CB) peak, adjancent to the Kondo pair, retained a memory of
the Kondo correlation and did not exhibit the familiar behavior in the CB
regime. These results do not agree with theoretical predictions, suggesting
that a full explanation may go beyond the framework of the Anderson model.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Novel Properties of The Apparent Metal-Insulator Transition in Two-Dimensional Systems
The low-temperature conductivity of low-density, high-mobility,
two-dimensional hole systems in GaAs was studied. We explicitly show that the
metal-insulator transition, observed in these systems, is characterized by a
well-defined critical density, p_0c. We also observe that the low-temperature
conductivity of these systems depends linearly on the hole density, over a wide
density range. The high-density linear conductivity extrapolates to zero at a
density close to the critical density.Comment: 4 Figure
Unintentional high density p-type modulation doping of a GaAs/AlAs core-multi-shell nanowire
Achieving significant doping in GaAs/AlAs core/shell nanowires (NWs) is of
considerable technological importance but remains a challenge due to the
amphoteric behavior of the dopant atoms. Here we show that placing a narrow
GaAs quantum well in the AlAs shell effectively getters residual carbon
acceptors leading to an \emph{unintentional} p-type doping. Magneto-optical
studies of such a GaAs/AlAs core multi-shell NW reveal quantum confined
emission. Theoretical calculations of NW electronic structure confirm quantum
confinement of carriers at the core/shell interface due to the presence of
ionized carbon acceptors in the 1~nm GaAs layer in the shell.
Micro-photoluminescence in high magnetic field shows a clear signature of
avoided crossings of the Landau level emission line with the Landau
level TO phonon replica. The coupling is caused by the resonant hole-phonon
interaction, which points to a large 2D hole density in the structure.Comment: just published in Nano Letters

Development of an International Odor Identification Test for Children: The Universal Sniff Test
Objective: To assess olfactory function in children and to create and validate an odor identification test to diagnose olfactory dysfunction in children, which we called the Universal Sniff (U-Sniff) test. Study design: This is a multicenter study involving 19 countries. The U-Sniff test was developed in 3 phases including 1760 children age 5-7 years. Phase 1: identification of potentially recognizable odors; phase 2: selection of odorants for the odor identification test; and phase 3: evaluation of the test and acquisition of normative data. Test—retest reliability was evaluated in a subgroup of children (n = 27), and the test was validated using children with congenital anosmia (n = 14). Results: Twelve odors were familiar to children and, therefore, included in the U-Sniff test. Children scored a mean ± SD of 9.88 ± 1.80 points out of 12. Normative data was obtained and reported for each country. The U-Sniff test demonstrated a high test—retest reliability (r27 = 0.83, P < .001) and enabled discrimination between normosmia and children with congenital anosmia with a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 86%.
