Effective-Range Expansion of the Neutron-Deuteron Scattering Studied by a Quark-Model Nonlocal Gaussian Potential
The S-wave effective range parameters of the neutron-deuteron (nd) scattering
are derived in the Faddeev formalism, using a nonlocal Gaussian potential based
on the quark-model baryon-baryon interaction fss2. The spin-doublet low-energy
eigenphase shift is sufficiently attractive to reproduce predictions by the
AV18 plus Urbana three-nucleon force, yielding the observed value of the
doublet scattering length and the correct differential cross sections below the
deuteron breakup threshold. This conclusion is consistent with the previous
result for the triton binding energy, which is nearly reproduced by fss2

Active Tuberculous Infection among Adult Sudanese Patients on Long Term Peritoneal Dialysis
Introduction: The prevalence of tuberculosis in Sudan is 209 cases per 100,000 populations. There are no reports available regarding the prevalence of tuberculosis among the end-stage kidney disease and dialysis populations.Methods: We reviewed the medical records of all adults who were on peritoneal dialysis (PD) in the Sudan Peritoneal Dialysis Program, during the period from June 2005 to December 2011. Those diagnosed ashaving active tuberculous infections were retrospectively studied regarding their demography, clinical presentation and outcomes.Results: Out of 350 patients in our program, 19 were diagnosed as having active tuberculosis (5.4%). All patients were diagnosed during their first year on peritoneal dialysis, 74% were males; the mean age was37 ± 11 years, extrapulmonary tuberculosis was seen in 16/19 (84%) patients and it was abdominal in nine of the 16 (47%) patients. In addition to high clinical suspicion, the diagnosis of active tuberculosis was supported by tissue biopsy findings in 16%, positive polymerase chain reaction in 26%, exudative ascites with suggestive radiological features in 21%, strongly positive tuberculin test in 21% and a favourable response to empirical antituberculous therapy in 26% of patients. HIV test wasnegative in all 19 patients and only one patient tested positive for hepatitis B viral infection. Antituberculous drugs side effects were seen in 68% of patients. Forty seven percent of patients showed complete recovery and continued on peritoneal dialysis. Our case fatality was 32%.Conclusion: Abdominal tuberculosis is common among PD patients and its diagnosis should always be considered in suspected patients
Farkas-Type Results for Vector-Valued Functions with Applications
The main purpose of this paper consists of providing characterizations of the inclusion of the solution set of a given conic system posed in a real locally convex topological space into a variety of subsets of the same space defined by means of vector-valued functions. A multi-exon deletion within WWOX is associated with a 46,XY disorder of sex development
Disorders of sex development (DSD) are congenital conditions where chromosomal, gonad or genital development is atypical. In a significant proportion of 46,XY DSD cases it is not possible to identify a causative mutation, making genetic counseling difficult and potentially hindering optimal treatment. Here, we describe the analysis of a 46,XY DSD patient that presented at birth with ambiguous genitalia. Histological analysis of the surgically removed gonads showed bilateral undifferentiated gonadal tissue and immature testis, both containing malignant germ cells. We screened genomic DNA from this patient for deletions and duplications using an Illumina whole-genome SNP microarray. This analysis revealed a heterozygous deletion within the WWOX gene on chromosome 16, removing exons 6-8. Analysis of parental DNA showed that the deletion was inherited from the mother. cDNA analysis confirmed that the deletion maintained the reading frame, with exon 5 being spliced directly onto exon 9. This deletion is the first description of a germline rearrangement affecting the coding sequence of WWOX in humans. Previously described Wwox knockout mouse models showed gonadal abnormalities, supporting a role for WWOX in human gonad development
Effects of antenatal betamethasone on preterm human and mouse ductus arteriosus: comparison with baboon data.
BackgroundAlthough studies involving preterm infants ≤34 weeks gestation report a decreased incidence of patent ductus arteriosus after antenatal betamethasone, studies involving younger gestation infants report conflicting results.MethodsWe used preterm baboons, mice, and humans (≤276/7 weeks gestation) to examine betamethasone's effects on ductus gene expression and constriction both in vitro and in vivo.ResultsIn mice, betamethasone increased the sensitivity of the premature ductus to the contractile effects of oxygen without altering the effects of other contractile or vasodilatory stimuli. Betamethasone's effects on oxygen sensitivity could be eliminated by inhibiting endogenous prostaglandin/nitric oxide signaling. In mice and baboons, betamethasone increased the expression of several developmentally regulated genes that mediate oxygen-induced constriction (K+ channels) and inhibit vasodilator signaling (phosphodiesterases). In human infants, betamethasone increased the rate of ductus constriction at all gestational ages. However, in infants born ≤256/7 weeks gestation, betamethasone's contractile effects were only apparent when prostaglandin signaling was inhibited, whereas at 26-27 weeks gestation, betamethasone's contractile effects were apparent even in the absence of prostaglandin inhibitors.ConclusionsWe speculate that betamethasone's contractile effects may be mediated through genes that are developmentally regulated. This could explain why betamethasone's effects vary according to the infant's developmental age at birth
The onset of the vortex-like Nernst signal above Tc in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 and Bi_2Sr_{2-y}La_yCuO_6
The diffusion of vortices down a thermal gradient produces a Josephson signal
which is detected as the vortex Nernst effect. In a recent report, Xu et al.,
Nature 406, 486 (2000), an enhanced Nernst signal identified with vortex-like
excitations was observed in a series of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (LSCO) crystals at
temperatures 50-100 K above T_c. To pin down the onset temperature T_{\nu} of
the vortex-like signal in the lightly doped regime (0.03 < x < 0.07), we have
re-analyzed in detail the carrier contribution to the Nernst signal. By
supplementing new Nernst measurements with thermopower and Hall-angle data, we
isolate the off-diagonal Peltier conductivity \alpha_{xy} and show that its
profile provides an objective determination of T_{\nu}. With the new results,
we revise the phase diagram for the fluctuation regime in LSCO to accomodate
the lightly doped regime. In the cuprate Bi_2Sr_{2-y}La_yCuO_6, we find that
the carrier contribution is virtually negligible for y in the range 0.4-0.6.
The evidence for an extended temperature interval with vortex-like excitations
is even stronger in this system. Finally, we discuss how T_{\nu} relates to the
pseudogap temperature T* and the implications of strong fluctuations between
the pseudogap state and the d-wave superconducting state.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
Augmenting the 6-3-5 method with design information
This paper describes a comparative study between the 6-3-5 Method and the ICR Grid. The ICR Grid is an evolved variant of 6-3-5 intended to better integrate information into the concept generation process. Unlike a conventional 6-3-5 process where participants continually sketch concepts, using the ICR Grid (the name derived from its Inform, Create, Reflect activities and structured, grid-like output) participants are additionally required to undertake information search tasks, use specific information items for concept development, and reflect on the merit of concepts as the session progresses. The results indicate that although the quantity of concepts was lower, the use of information had a positive effect in a number of areas, principally the quality and variety of output. Although grounded in the area of product development, this research is applicable to any organisation undertaking idea generation and problem solving. As well as providing insights on the transference of information to concepts, it holds additional interest for studies on the composition and use of digital libraries
Revisiting the Y=0 open spin chain at one loop
In 2005, Berenstein and Vazquez determined an open spin chain Hamiltonian
describing the one-loop anomalous dimensions of determinant-like operators
corresponding to open strings attached to Y=0 maximal giant gravitons. We
construct the transfer matrix (generating functional of conserved quantities)
containing this Hamiltonian, thereby directly proving its integrability. We
find the eigenvalues of this transfer matrix and the corresponding Bethe
equations, which we compare with proposed all-loop Bethe equations. We note
that the Bethe ansatz solution has a certain "gauge" freedom, and is not
