Combination of theoretical and in situ experimental investigations of the role of lithium dopant in manganese nitride: a two-stage reagent for ammonia synthesis
Manganese nitride related materials are of interest as two-stage reagents for ammonia synthesis via nitrogen chemical looping. However, unless they are doped with a co-cation, manganese nitrides are thermochemically stable and a high temperature is required to produce ammonia under reducing conditions, thereby hindering their use as nitrogen transfer materials. Nevertheless, when lithium is used as dopant, ammonia generation can be observed at a reaction temperature as low as 300 °C. In order to develop strategies for the improvement of the reactivity of nitride materials in the context of two-stage reagents, it is necessary to understand the intrinsic role of the dopant in the mechanism of ammonia synthesis. To this end, we have investigated the role of lithium in increasing the manganese nitride reactivity by in situ neutron diffraction studies and N2 and H2 isotopic exchange reactions supplemented by DFT calculations
The predictive moment: reverie, connection and predictive processing
According to the theory of predictive processing, understanding in the present involves non-consciously representing the immediate future, based on probabilistic inference shaped by learning from the past. This paper suggests links between this neuroscientific theory and the psychoanalytic concept of reverie â an empathic, containing attentional state â and considers implications for the ways therapists intuit implicit material in their clients. Using findings from a study about therapistsâ experiences of this state, we propose that reverie can offer practitioners from diverse theoretical backgrounds a means to enter the predictive moment deeply, making use of its subtle contents to connect with clients
Robust modeling of human contact networks across different scales and proximity-sensing techniques
The problem of mapping human close-range proximity networks has been tackled
using a variety of technical approaches. Wearable electronic devices, in
particular, have proven to be particularly successful in a variety of settings
relevant for research in social science, complex networks and infectious
diseases dynamics. Each device and technology used for proximity sensing (e.g.,
RFIDs, Bluetooth, low-power radio or infrared communication, etc.) comes with
specific biases on the close-range relations it records. Hence it is important
to assess which statistical features of the empirical proximity networks are
robust across different measurement techniques, and which modeling frameworks
generalize well across empirical data. Here we compare time-resolved proximity
networks recorded in different experimental settings and show that some
important statistical features are robust across all settings considered. The
observed universality calls for a simplified modeling approach. We show that
one such simple model is indeed able to reproduce the main statistical
distributions characterizing the empirical temporal networks
The development of the British Red Cross' psychosocial framework: 'calmer'
This paper presents the history, development and approach of the new psychosocial framework which in 2008 was adopted by the British Red Cross, and a piece of research designed to review its fitness for purpose as an educational tool. The framework CALMER is a single, overarching approach for considering and delivering psychosocial services across all of the British Red Cross. It is being included in all relevant training programmes, such as within first aid and psychosocial support and within services in emergency response, event first aid, health and social care, international tracing and message and refugee services and across human resources. The framework includes six prompts which should be followed sequentially, with guidance on facilitative behaviours within each. The research considered the levels of confidence and worry of participants on one day training programmes delivered to three different groups of personnel in three different countries. While finding support for the CALMER framework, further recommendations are made for future research
Containment - exploring the concept of agency in childrenâs statutory encounters with social workers
This article examines childrenâs agency in their interactions with social workers during statutory encounters in a child protection context. It draws from a UK wide ethnographic study. It finds that much of social workersâ responses to childrenâs agency in this context are best understood as a form of âcontainmentâ. In doing so, it offers an original and significant contribution to the theoretical understanding of childrenâs agency, as well as its application in social work practice

A Racist Attack Managing Complex Relationships with Traumatised Service Users â a Psychodynamic Approach
Notions of whiteness, white supremacy and racial hatred such as the recent multiple racist murders by a white supremacist in New Zealand are at the forefront of public consciousness. How does whiteness and racism play out in a clinical and social welfare context? This article illustrates the impact of trauma on a vulnerable young white woman who although was not the direct target of a racist assault was left traumatized by witnessing it. It discusses how initially she sought refuge in a racist solution synonymous with a psychic retreat to her own detriment. Working with such complex, unconscious and bewildering dynamics are extremely challenging for clinicians. It describes the impact of these dynamics on a clinician of colour who attempted to work with this young woman in a child and adolescent mental health service after the family were referred as a consequence of her assaulting her child shortly after witnessing the racist attack. The unconscious responses to trauma and challenges for clinicians and clinician of colour in particular when working with racism in the consulting room are also discussed

Imagining transitions in old age through the visual matrix method: thinking about what is hard to bear
Dominant discourses of ageing are often confined to what is less painful to think about and therefore idealise or denigrate ageing and later life. We present findings from an exploratory psychosocial study, in a Nordic context into three later-life transitions: from working life to retirement, from mental health to dementia, and from life to death. Because, for some, these topics are hard to bear, and therefore defended against and routinely excluded from everyday awareness, we used a method led by imagery and affect - the Visual Matrix - to elicit participantsâ free associative personal and collective imagination. Through analysis of data extracts, on the three transitions, we illustrate oscillations between defending against the challenges of ageing and realism in facing the anxieties it can provoke. A recurring theme includes the finality of individual life and the inter-generational continuity, which together link life and death, hope and despair, separation and connectedness
Supporting childrenâs social and emotional well-being in the early years: an exploration of practitionersâ perceptions
Childrenâs social and emotional well-being can be supported through their experiences of early years education to promote positive life-long outcomes. This study explored the views of 10 early years practitioners in relation to supporting childrenâs social and emotional well-being. Data was gathered using semi-structured interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. Themes were explored in relation to practitionersâ understanding of âsocial and emotional well-beingâ as well as their views on training opportunities in this area. The findings identified how early years practitioners conceptualize social and emotional well-being and highlighted the complexities and intricacies of the parent-practitioner relationship in the early years. The emotional well-being of staff was also pertinent to early years practitionersâ views. It is proposed that future research and practice focuses on opportunities for reflective discussions for early years staff and on the development of relationships
