The effect of wavy leading edges on aerofoil-gust interaction noise
High-order accurate numerical simulations are performed to investigate the effects of wavy leading edges (WLEs) on aerofoilâgust interaction (AGI) noise. The present study is based on periodic velocity disturbances predominantly in streamwise and vertical directions that are mainly responsible for the surface pressure fluctuation of an aerofoil. In general, the present results show that WLEs lead to reduced AGI noise. It is found that the ratio of the wavy leading-edge peak-to-peak amplitude (LEA) to the longitudinal wavelength of the incident gust (?g) is the most important factor for the reduction of AGI noise. It is observed that there exists a tendency that the reduction of AGI noise increases with LEA/?g and the noise reduction is significant for LEA/?g?0.3. The present results also suggest that any two different cases with the same LEA/?g lead to a strong similarity in their profiles of noise reduction relative to the straight leading-edge case. The wavelength of wavy leading edges (LEW), however, shows minor influence on the reduction of AGI noise under the present gust profiles used. Nevertheless, the present results show that a meaningful improvement in noise reduction may be achieved when 1.0?LEW/?g?1.5. In addition, it is found that the beneficial effects of WLEs are maintained for various flow incidence angles and aerofoil thicknesses. Also, the WLEs remain effective for gust profiles containing multiple frequency components. It is discovered in this paper that WLEs result in incoherent response time to the incident gust across the span, which results in a decreased level of surface pressure fluctuations, hence a reduced level of AGI noise
Topological Black Holes in Gauss-Bonnet Gravity with conformally invariant Maxwell source
In this paper, we present a class of rotating solutions in Gauss--Bonnet
gravity in the presence of cosmological constant and conformally invariant
Maxwell field and study the effects of the nonlinearity of the Maxwell source
on the properties of the spacetimes. These solutions may be interpret as black
brane solutions with inner and outer event horizons provide that the mass
parameter is greater than an extremal value , an extreme black
brane if and a naked singularity otherwise. We investigate the
conserved and thermodynamics quantities for asymptotically flat and
asymptotically with flat horizon. We also show that the conserved and
thermodynamic quantities of these solutions satisfy the first law of
thermodynamics.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, some references adde
The (p,q) String Tension in a Warped Deformed Conifold
We find the tension spectrum of the bound states of p fundamental strings and
q D-strings at the bottom of a warped deformed conifold. We show that it can be
obtained from a D3-brane wrapping a 2-cycle that is stabilized by both electric
and magnetic fluxes. Because the F-strings are Z_M-charged with non-zero
binding energy, binding can take place even if (p,q) are not coprime.
Implications for cosmic strings are briefly discussed.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figur
Thermodynamics of Rotating Black Branes in Gauss-Bonnet-nonlinear Maxwell Gravity
We consider the Gauss-Bonnet gravity in the presence of a new class of
nonlinear electromagnetic field, namely, power Maxwell invariant. By use of a
suitable transformation, we obtain a class of real rotating solutions with
rotation parameters and investigate some properties of the solutions such as
existence of singularity(ies) and asymptotic behavior of them. Also, we
calculate the finite action, thermodynamic and conserved quantities of the
solutions and using the the Smarr-type formula to check the first law of
thermodynamics.Comment: 15 page
Slowly rotating charged black holes in anti-de Sitter third order Lovelock gravity
In this paper, we study slowly rotating black hole solutions in Lovelock
gravity (n=3). These exact slowly rotating black hole solutions are obtained in
uncharged and charged cases, respectively. Up to the linear order of the
rotating parameter a, the mass, Hawking temperature and entropy of the
uncharged black holes get no corrections from rotation. In charged case, we
compute magnetic dipole moment and gyromagnetic ratio of the black holes. It is
shown that the gyromagnetic ratio keeps invariant after introducing the
Gauss-Bonnet and third order Lovelock interactions.Comment: 14 pages, no figur
Black holes in the Einstein -Gauss-Bonnet theory and the geometry of their thermodynamics-II
In the present work we study (i) charged black hole in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet
(EGB) theory, known as Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet (EMGB) black hole and (ii)
black hole in EGB gravity with Yang-Mills field. The thermodynamic geometry of
these two black hole solutions has been investigated, using the modified
entropy in Gauss-Bonnet theory.Comment: 7 page
Rotating Black Branes in the presence of nonlinear electromagnetic field
In this paper, we consider a class of gravity whose action represents itself
as a sum of the usual Einstein-Hilbert action with cosmological constant and an
gauge field for which the action is given by a power of the Maxwell
invariant. We present a class of the rotating black branes with Ricci flat
horizon and show that the presented solutions may be interpreted as black brane
solutions with two event horizons, extreme black hole and naked singularity
provided the parameters of the solutions are chosen suitably. We investigate
the properties of the solutions and find that for the special values of the
nonlinear parameter, the solutions are not asymptotically anti-deSitter. At
last, we obtain the conserved quantities of the rotating black branes and find
that the nonlinear source effects on the electric field, the behavior of
spacetime, type of singularity and other quantities.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, to appear in EPJ
Geometrothermodynamics of five dimensional black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-theory
We investigate the thermodynamic properties of 5D static and spherically
symmetric black holes in (i) Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet theory, (ii)
Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet theory with negative cosmological constant, and
in (iii) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Gauss-Bonnet theory. To formulate the
thermodynamics of these black holes we use the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy
relation and, alternatively, a modified entropy formula which follows from the
first law of thermodynamics of black holes. The results of both approaches are
not equivalent. Using the formalism of geometrothermodynamics, we introduce in
the manifold of equilibrium states a Legendre invariant metric for each black
hole and for each thermodynamic approach, and show that the thermodynamic
curvature diverges at those points where the temperature vanishes and the heat
capacity diverges.Comment: New sections added, references adde
Consumption of a high-salt diet by ewes during pregnancy alters nephrogenesis in 5-month-old offspring
Maternal nutrition during pregnancy can affect kidney development in the foetus, which may lead to adverse consequences in the mature kidney. It was expected that high-salt intake by pregnant ewes would lead to a reduction in foetal glomerular number but that the ovine kidney would adapt to maintain homoeostasis, in part by increasing the size of each glomerulus. Merino ewes that were fed either a control (1.5% NaCl) or high-salt (10.5% NaCl) diet during pregnancy, as well as their 5-month-old offspring, were subjected to a dietary salt challenge, and glomerular number and size and sodium excretion were measured. The high-salt offspring had 20% fewer glomeruli compared with the control offspring ( P,0.001), but they also had larger glomerular radii compared with the control offspring ( P,0.001). Consequently, the cross-sectional area of glomeruli was 18% larger in the high-salt offspring than in the control offspring ( P,0.05). There was no difference in the daily urinary sodium excretion between the two offspring groups ( P.0.05), although the high-salt offspring produced urine with a higher concentration of sodium. Our results demonstrated that maternal high-salt intake during pregnancy affected foetal nephrogenesis, altering glomerular number at birth. However, the ability to concentrate and excrete salt was not compromised, which indicates that the kidney was able to adapt to the reduction in the number of glomeruli
