This work is a study of everyday spaces and activities of daily living that are often overlooked. These photographs capture raw moments of people’s lives, without artistic fabrication, communicating a sense of candor. I create photographs of interior spaces that stand out mentally to me and which include objects with unique characteristics. I illustrate portions of a given location, but intentionally do not give away all of the specifics of the space. There is an absence of a figure, yet symbolic fingerprints are apparent in these very personal spaces. Although the individual is not the focus, the space or environment is enriched by the past and future presence of that individual. The un-fixed daily activities and scenarios captured in my scenes provide insight to an individual and the life they lead. Oftentimes, big highlights of people’s lives are the only memories captured by photographs; however, photographing everyday domestic objects offers a realistic viewpoint of life to reflect upon and view in a different light. I invite the viewer to take an active role in the work by means of reflection, personal interpretation, or memory through life experience. The search that is involved in finding the spaces for the photographs is of greater importance than the editing and post-process that follows the making of the photographs. I provide balance and context to the subject of the photographs through the framing of the scene, thus allowing a story to be ascertained. The consistent presence of the individuals’ responsible for the space and their physical absence within the photographs propels the continuation of this conundrum. The photographs depict spaces and physical domestic objects that have worn over time, providing a conclusion in a still frame while allowing the onlooker to imagine the story that may have led up to that point. These snapshots of everyday life allow the mind of the viewer to wander and allow the photo to play out in a variety of ways that are dependent upon their mood, life experience, and personal interests. -Conner Murthttps://digitalcommons.murraystate.edu/art499/1050/thumbnail.jp

Conner Murt Artist/Design Statement These photographs capture raw moments of people’s lives, without artistic fabrication, communicating a sense of candor and ingenuity in each photograph. There is an absence of a figure, yet obvious fingerprints have been left on the space due to its unique nature. Most easily explained, taking pictures of things that stand out mentally in a personal sense, have unique characteristics, and can illustrate only portions of a destination, without giving away all of the specifics of that said place are what is photographed within this work. The search that is involved in finding the spaces for the photograph is of greater importance than the editing and after process that follows photo taking. The images are framed in a way that provides balance and context to the subject of the photograph, thus allowing its story to be ascertained. The story of the consistent presence of the individuals responsible for the space, but the absence of their being within the photographs propels the continuation of this conundrum. The photographs depict spaces and subjects/items that are worn and have clearly developed over time, providing a conclusion in a still frame, while allowing the onlooker to imagine the story that may have led up to that point. Photos of hands have also been incorporated into this work throughout the years. The inspiration and focus of these photos is the presentation of hands being a working part of an individual, heading somewhere, doing something, or pursuing daily activities. These snapshots of everyday life allow the eye of the beholder to fill in the blanks and allow his or her mind to wander and allow the photo to play out in a variety of ways that are dependent upon mood, life experience, and personal interests. Inspiration for this work is drawn from two artists in particular: Ted Geshue and Nan Goldin. Ted Geshue is an independent photographer and digital media specialist living presently in London, England. His work primarily consists of classic cars and hazy landscapes. Ted Geshue’s photos produce a creamy, hazy lighting similar to what is broadcasted within this work. Inspiration is drawn from his lighting in particular when choosing destinations to photograph and during the editing process. In addition, Nan Goldin’s photography is a bit more chaotic, having collaborations with the likes of Supreme and large scale gallery representation such as MoMA. She resides and works in New York City, Berlin, and Paris. Nan Goldin inspires this work by means of capturing oddities, by implementing new objects of focus, and by never viewing everyday things plainly while undoubtedly stepping out of zones of comfort. Studying everyday spaces and activities of daily living that are often overlooked is the focus of this work. The individual is not the focus, rather the space or environment enriched by that individual. Natural, un-fixed daily activities and scenerios provide insight to an individual and the life which they lead. Oftentimes, big highlights of people’s livelihood are the only memories captured by photographs; however, photographing everyday activities and natural events that are unrefined give people a realistic viewpoint of life to reflect upon and view in a different light. Revealing the identity of the figures behind the photographed spaces would divulge the mysterious nature of the work. The intent behind this specific work process is to invite the viewer to take an active role in the work by means of reflection, personal interpretation, or memory through life experience.https://digitalcommons.murraystate.edu/art399/1098/thumbnail.jp

The paper focuses on the first results of the Turkish part of the research project "Political Potential of the Internet. The virtual Diaspora of Migrants from Russia and Turkey in Germany". It addresses the question, what websites exist on the on the Internet for people of Turkish origin who want to engage themselves politically and what characteristics this political sphere on the Internet possesses. It also examines, whether the opportunities for political participation of Turkish migrants and German Turks have been changed or even expanded through the Internet. All in all, this analysis shows that the political online activity of German Turks is concentrated on Germany. While German online media play a major role for the political information of this group, debates on migration and integration issues are mostly carried out in a Turkish-coined virtual space

UK Hydrographic Department Progress with Computer Assisted Cartographic Techniques

In an earlier contribution to this Review [1] in July 1976 the UK Hydrographic Department’s experiences with digitising equipment were described. The procedures by which data were digitised on offline tables and then edited on a Ferranti interactive editing station were discussed. A later paper by Tolson [2] indicated, amongst other things, the use the UK Hydrographic Department were making of voice recognition equipment to help with the encoding of graphical sounding data on an offline digitiser table. Details of the computer-assisted techniques being used at sea in some of the UK hydrographic surveying fleet have also appeared in an earlier issue of this Review [3] and elsewhere [4]. It is the intention of this paper to report the recent progress made by the UK Hydrographic Department in the area of computer assisted cartography

Cohort-specific winter growth rates of YOY bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix, in northeast Florida estuaries: implications for recruitment

    Get PDF
Abstract Age and growth were determined from otoliths for 181 juvenile bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix), collected using a variety of gear in northeast Florida during 2003 and 2005. Three distinct cohorts were identified recruiting to the near shore waters during spring, summer and autumn. Growth rates were high regardless of cohort or season. To compare pre-and post-recruitment growth rates, models were fit to individual growth trajectories using change point analysis. Post-estuarine growth rates were generally higher. Growth rates and hatching times were within the range of those obtained in other bluefish studies conducted at higher latitudes. As this is the only area where winter recruitment of bluefish has been observed, coastal Florida habitats may be essential for the bluefish stock and will need to be carefully monitored in future studies

Changing patterns of hospital use for patients with musculoskeletal diseases in Michigan, 1980 to 1987

Over the past 10 years there have been dramatic changes in health care financing in the United States, such as Medicare's Prospective Payment System for hospitalized Medicare beneficiaries, and in health services delivery, such as the growth in health maintenance organizations and other forms of managed care. These changes have occurred largely in response to payors' concerns about the rising cost of health care. A study of such changes in financing and delivery, and how specific groups of patients are affected is necessary so that the effects of these changes on patients' health can be determined. We examined the hospitalization rates for patients with musculoskeletal diseases in Michigan from 1980 through 1987. During this period, the overall ageadjusted hospitalization rates decreased 7.0% per year (p = 0.001). The decrease occurred less for surgical discharges (6.0% per year) than for medical discharges (8.6% per year) (p < 0.001). While these overall trends are of interest, they obscure disease-specific trends that vary significantly from both the overall, and the medical and surgical trends. For example, while surgical discharges, in general declined, procedures related to major joint and limb reattachment (DRG # 209) increased at a rate of 6.3% per year. And while medical discharges in general decreased over this period, discharges for osteomyelitis increased 5.4% per year. The patterns of diseasespecific trends offers insight into the possible causes for these changes. Finally, it is important to understand the epidemiology of hospital use to evaluate the effects of new medical care delivery and payment systems on the care of subsets of patients.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/37794/1/1790050210_ftp.pd
