The Grand Designs of Gilbert of Assailly: The Order of the Hospital in the Projected Conquest of Egypt by King Amalric of Jerusalem (1168-1169)
The chronicler William of Tyre is highly critical of the Hospitaller master Gilbert of Assailly, whom he blames for bankrupting the Order of the Hospital through his support for invasions of Egypt undertaken by King Amalric of Jerusalem. This essay attempts to identify and contextualise the concessions made by the king to the Hospitallers in exchange for their military support. It is argued that while the Egyptian campaigns involved a large financial investment for the Order, they promised vast economic gains in the event of a successful outcome, including a large contiguous territory in Lower Egypt and other property situated throughout the country

Communication with patients using negative wound pressure therapy and their adherence to treatment
Objective: Wound healing is a normal physiological process which is moderated by biological and social factors. However, delayed healing is common amongst older people and in those with long term conditions. The purpose of this study was to explore the challenges of communication between patients and professionals and adherence to treatment for chronic wounds when using negative wound pressure therapy (NPWT).
Methods: Twenty-four participants, took part in face to face semi-structured interviews. Specific features of the NPWT device were the priority for discussion although we also explored other factors central to communication and adherence.
Results: Data saturation was achieved during the analysis. We found that patients require on-going support to understand complex and often protracted treatment and this is particularly important when specialist technology is used. A distinction was highlighted between those who decided not to adhere with therapy and those who did so unintentionally. Participants faced difficulties in their communications with professionals and in ensuring their needs were listened to and addressed.
Conclusions: Further research is needed to achieve a better understanding of this distinction and to evaluate interventions which can sustain adherence behaviours. Further exploration of how to establish concordant patient / professional communications is warranted
STM and RHEED study of the Si(001)-c(8x8) surface
The Si(001) surface deoxidized by short annealing at T~925C in the ultrahigh
vacuum molecular beam epitaxy chamber has been in situ investigated by high
resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and reflected high energy
electron diffraction (RHEED). RHEED patterns corresponding to (2x1) and (4x4)
structures were observed during sample treatment. The (4x4) reconstruction
arose at T<600C after annealing. The reconstruction was observed to be
reversible: the (4x4) structure turned into the (2x1) one at T>600C, the (4x4)
structure appeared again at recurring cooling. The c(8x8) reconstruction was
revealed by STM at room temperature on the same samples. A fraction of the
surface area covered by the c(8x8) structure decreased as the sample cooling
rate was reduced. The (2x1) structure was observed on the surface free of the
c(8x8) one. The c(8x8) structure has been evidenced to manifest itself as the
(4x4) one in the RHEED patterns. A model of the c(8x8) structure formation has
been built on the basis of the STM data. Origin of the high-order structure on
the Si(001) surface and its connection with the epinucleation phenomenon are

Prediction of 7-year psychopathology from mother-infant joint attention behaviours: a nested case–control study
<br>Background: To investigate whether later diagnosis of psychiatric disorder can be predicted from analysis of mother-infant joint attention (JA) behaviours in social-communicative interaction at 12 months.</br>
<br>Method:
Using data from a large contemporary birth cohort, we examined 159 videos of a mother-infant interaction for joint attention behaviour when children were aged one year, sampled from within the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) cohort. Fifty-three of the videos involved infants who were later considered to have a psychiatric disorder at seven years and 106 were same aged controls. Psychopathologies included in the case group were disruptive behaviour disorders, oppositional-conduct disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, pervasive development disorder, anxiety and depressive disorders. Psychiatric diagnoses were obtained using the Development and Wellbeing Assessment when the children were seven years old.</br> <br>Results: None of the three JA behaviours (shared look rate, shared attention rate and shared attention intensity) showed a significant association with the primary outcome of case–control status. Only shared look rate predicted any of the exploratory sub-diagnosis outcomes and was found to be positively associated with later oppositional-conduct disorders (OR [95% CI]: 1.5 [1.0, 2.3]; p = 0.041).</br><br>Conclusions: JA behaviours did not, in general, predict later psychopathology. However, shared look was positively associated with later oppositional-conduct disorders. This suggests that some features of JA may be early markers of later psychopathology. Further investigation will be required to determine whether any JA behaviours can be used to screen for families in need of intervention.</br>

U.S.-funded global health research can serve\ud
to combat these health disparities in the\ud
United States, in addition to benefiting\ud
communities abroad
The rolling problem: overview and challenges
In the present paper we give a historical account -ranging from classical to
modern results- of the problem of rolling two Riemannian manifolds one on the
other, with the restrictions that they cannot instantaneously slip or spin one
with respect to the other. On the way we show how this problem has profited
from the development of intrinsic Riemannian geometry, from geometric control
theory and sub-Riemannian geometry. We also mention how other areas -such as
robotics and interpolation theory- have employed the rolling model.Comment: 20 page
Cytochrome P450 CYP1B1 activity in renal cell carcinoma
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common malignancy of the kidney and has a poor prognosis due to its late presentation and resistance to current anticancer drugs. One mechanism of drug resistance, which is potentially amenable to therapeutic intervention, is based on studies in our laboratory. CYP1B1 is a cytochrome P450 enzyme overexpressed in a variety of malignant tumours. Our studies are now elucidating a functional role for CYP1B1 in drug resistance. Cytochrome P450 reductase (P450R) is required for optimal metabolic activity of CYP1B1. Both CYP1B1 and P450R can catalyse the biotransformation of anticancer drugs at the site of the tumour. In this investigation, we determined the expression of CYP1B1 and P450R in samples of normal kidney and RCC (11 paired normal and tumour and a further 15 tumour samples). The O-deethylation of ethoxyresorufin to resorufin was used to measure CYP1B1 activity in RCC. Cytochrome P450 reductase activity was determined by following the reduction of cytochrome c at 550 nm. The key finding of this study was the presence of active CYP1B1 in 70% of RCC. Coincubation with the CYP1B1 inhibitor alpha-naphthoflavone (10nM) inhibited this activity. No corresponding CYP1B1 activity was detected in any of the normal tissue examined (n = 11). Measurable levels of active P450R were determined in all normal (n = 11) and tumour samples (n = 26). The presence of detectable CYP1B1, which is capable of metabolising anticancer drugs in tumour cells, highlights a novel target for therapeutic intervention
Dusty Planetary Systems
Extensive photometric stellar surveys show that many main sequence stars show
emission at infrared and longer wavelengths that is in excess of the stellar
photosphere; this emission is thought to arise from circumstellar dust. The
presence of dust disks is confirmed by spatially resolved imaging at infrared
to millimeter wavelengths (tracing the dust thermal emission), and at optical
to near infrared wavelengths (tracing the dust scattered light). Because the
expected lifetime of these dust particles is much shorter than the age of the
stars (>10 Myr), it is inferred that this solid material not primordial, i.e.
the remaining from the placental cloud of gas and dust where the star was born,
but instead is replenished by dust-producing planetesimals. These planetesimals
are analogous to the asteroids, comets and Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) in our
Solar system that produce the interplanetary dust that gives rise to the
zodiacal light (tracing the inner component of the Solar system debris disk).
The presence of these "debris disks" around stars with a wide range of masses,
luminosities, and metallicities, with and without binary companions, is
evidence that planetesimal formation is a robust process that can take place
under a wide range of conditions. This chapter is divided in two parts. Part I
discusses how the study of the Solar system debris disk and the study of debris
disks around other stars can help us learn about the formation, evolution and
diversity of planetary systems by shedding light on the frequency and timing of
planetesimal formation, the location and physical properties of the
planetesimals, the presence of long-period planets, and the dynamical and
collisional evolution of the system. Part II reviews the physical processes
that affect dust particles in the gas-free environment of a debris disk and
