Astrophysical Probes of Fundamental Physics
I review the theoretical motivation for varying fundamental couplings and
discuss how these measurements can be used to constrain a number of fundamental
physics scenarios that would otherwise be inacessible to experiment. As a case
study I will focus on the relation between varying couplings and dark energy,
and explain how varying coupling measurements can be used to probe the nature
of dark energy, with important advantages over the standard methods. Assuming
that the current observational evidence for varying and is
correct, a several-sigma detection of dynamical dark energy is feasible within
a few years, using currently operational ground-based facilities. With
forthcoming instruments like CODEX, a high-accuracy reconstruction of the

Constraining fundamental constants of physics with quasar absorption line systems
We summarize the attempts by our group and others to derive constraints on
variations of fundamental constants over cosmic time using quasar absorption
lines. Most upper limits reside in the range 0.5-1.5x10-5 at the 3sigma level
over a redshift range of approximately 0.5-2.5 for the fine-structure constant,
alpha, the proton-to-electron mass ratio, mu, and a combination of the proton
gyromagnetic factor and the two previous constants, gp(alpha^2/mu)^nu, for only
one claimed variation of alpha. It is therefore very important to perform new
measurements to improve the sensitivity of the numerous methods to at least
<0.1x10-5 which should be possible in the next few years. Future
instrumentations on ELTs in the optical and/or ALMA, EVLA and SKA pathfinders
in the radio will undoutedly boost this field by allowing to reach much better
signal-to-noise ratios at higher spectral resolution and to perform
measurements on molecules in the ISM of high redshift galaxies.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Characterization and sequence mapping of large RNA and mRNA therapeutics using mass spectrometry
Large RNA including mRNA (mRNA) has emerged as an important new class of therapeutics. Recently, this has been demonstrated by two highly efficacious vaccines based on mRNA sequences encoding for a modified version of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. There is currently significant demand for the development of new and improved analytical methods for the characterization of large RNA including mRNA therapeutics. In this study, we have developed an automated, high-throughput workflow for the rapid characterization and direct sequence mapping of large RNA and mRNA therapeutics. Partial RNase digestions using RNase T1 immobilized on magnetic particles were performed in conjunction with high-resolution liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis. Sequence mapping was performed using automated oligoribonucleotide annotation and identifications based on MS/MS spectra. Using this approach, a >80% sequence of coverage of a range of large RNAs and mRNA therapeutics including the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein was obtained in a single analysis. The analytical workflow, including automated sample preparation, can be completed within 90 min. The ability to rapidly identify, characterize, and sequence map large mRNA therapeutics with high sequence coverage provides important information for identity testing, sequence validation, and impurity analysis
Reference points for predators will progress ecosystem-based management of fisheries.
Ecosystem-based management of fisheries aims to allow sustainable use of fished stocks while keeping impacts upon ecosystems within safe ecological limits. Both the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets promote these aims. We evaluate implementation of ecosystem-based management in six case study fisheries in which potential indirect impacts upon bird or mammal predators of fished stocks are well publicized and well studied. In particular we consider the components needed to enable management strategies to respond to information from predator monitoring. Although such information is available in all case studies, only one has a reference point defining safe ecological limits for predators and none has a method to adjust fishing activities in response to estimates of the state of the predator population. Reference points for predators have been developed outside the fisheries management context but adoption by fisheries managers is hindered a lack of clarity about management objectives and uncertainty about how fishing affects predator dynamics. This also hinders the development of adjustment methods because these generally require information on the state of ecosystem variables relative to reference points. Nonetheless, most of the case studies 58 include precautionary measures to limit impacts on predators. These measures are not used tactically and therefore risk excessive restrictions on sustainable use. Adoption of predator reference points to inform tactical adjustment of precautionary measures would be an appropriate next step towards ecosystem-based management
Search for varying constants of nature from astronomical observation of molecules
The status of searches for possible variation in the constants of nature from
astronomical observation of molecules is reviewed, focusing on the
dimensionless constant representing the proton-electron mass ratio
. The optical detection of H and CO molecules with large
ground-based telescopes (as the ESO-VLT and the Keck telescopes), as well as
the detection of H with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph aboard the Hubble
Space Telescope is discussed in the context of varying constants, and in
connection to different theoretical scenarios. Radio astronomy provides an
alternative search strategy bearing the advantage that molecules as NH
(ammonia) and CHOH (methanol) can be used, which are much more sensitive to
a varying than diatomic molecules. Current constraints are
for redshift , corresponding to
look-back times of 10-12.5 Gyrs, and for
, corresponding to half the age of the Universe (both at 3
statistical significance). Existing bottlenecks and prospects for future

Further evidence for a variable fine-structure constant from Keck/HIRES QSO absorption spectra
[Abridged] We previously presented evidence for a varying fine-structure
constant, alpha, in two independent samples of Keck/HIRES QSO spectra. Here we
present a detailed many-multiplet analysis of a third Keck/HIRES sample
containing 78 absorption systems. We also re-analyse the previous samples,
providing a total of 128 absorption systems over the redshift range
0.2<z_abs<3.7. All three samples separately yield consistent, significant
values of da/a. The analyses of low- and high-z systems rely on different
ions/transitions with very different dependencies on alpha, yet they also give
consistent results. We identify additional random errors in 22 high-z systems
characterized by transitions with a large dynamic range in apparent optical
depth. Increasing the statistical errors on da/a for these systems gives our
fiducial result, a weighted mean da/a=(-0.543+/-0.116)x10^-5, representing
4.7-sigma evidence for a smaller weighted mean alpha in the absorption clouds.
Assuming that da/a=0 at z_abs=0, the data marginally prefer a linear increase
in alpha with time: dota/a=(6.40+/-1.35)x10^-16 yr^-1. The two-point
correlation function for alpha is consistent with zero over 0.2-13 Gpc comoving
scales and the angular distribution of da/a shows no significant dipolar
anisotropy. We therefore have no evidence for spatial variations in da/a. We
extend our previous searches for possible systematic errors, identifying
atmospheric dispersion and isotopic structure effects as potentially the most
significant. However, overall, known systematic errors do not explain the
results. Future many-multiplet analyses of QSO spectra from different
telescopes and spectrographs will provide a now crucial check on our Keck/HIRES

Driven to excess? Linking calling, character and the (mis)behaviour of marketers
We are presently at a point of unique circumstantial convergence where recession, an increased emphasis on business ethics, and marketer’s reluctance to accept shifting social agendas have combined to identify the need for a new approach to marketing. Using concepts from the human resources, marketing and psychology literatures, and especially Erich Fromm’s ideas concerning economic character, this paper posits that marketers – as a professional community – are driven to promote consumerist outcomes; victims of an automaton amalgam of calling and character. The analysis suggests the vulnerability of both marketer and consumer are mutually reinforcing and that we need, somehow, to break this damaging cycle of dependence. We know little, however, about how marketers think and feel about their discipline, so this paper also promotes an agenda for marketer behaviour research, as a countervailing balance to a currently disproportionate focus on the consumer
E-retailing ethics in Egypt and its effect on customer repurchase intention
The theoretical understanding of online shopping behaviour has received much attention. Less focus has been given to the formation of the ethical issues that result from online shopper interactions with e-retailers. The vast majority of earlier research on this area is conceptual in nature and limited in scope by focusing on consumers’ privacy issues. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to propose a theoretical model explaining what factors contribute to online retailing ethics and its effect on customer repurchase intention. The data were analysed using variance-based structural equation modelling, employing partial least squares regression. Findings indicate that the five factors of the online retailing ethics (security, privacy, non- deception, fulfilment/reliability, and corporate social responsibility) are strongly predictive of online consumers’ repurchase intention. The results offer important implications for e-retailers and are likely to stimulate further research in the area of e-ethics from the consumers’ perspective
