    Effects of Dissolving Solutions on the Accuracy of an Electronic Apex Locator-Integrated Endodontic Handpiece

    The effects of three dissolving agents on the accuracy of an electronic apex locator- (EAL-) integrated endodontic handpiece during retreatment procedures were evaluated. The true lengths (TLs) of 56 extracted incisor teeth were determined visually. Twenty teeth were filled with gutta-percha and a resin-based sealer (group A), 20 with gutta-percha and a zinc oxide/eugenol-based sealer (group B), and 16 roots were used as the control group (group C). All roots were prepared to TL. Guttasolv, Resosolv, and Endosolv E were used as the dissolving solutions. Two evaluations of the handpiece were performed: the apical accuracy during the auto reverse function (ARL) and the apex locator function (EL) alone. The ARL function of the handpiece gave acceptable results. There were significant differences between the EL mode measurements and the TL (P<0.05). In these comparisons, Tri Auto ZX EL mode measurements were significantly shorter than those of the TL

    Understanding the effects of chitosan, chia mucilage, levan based composite coatings on the shelf life of sweet cherry

    Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) fruits are prone to quality and quantity loss in shelf-life conditions and cold storage due to their short post-harvest life. Until now efforts have been made to extend the shelf life of the sweet cherry. However, an efficient and commercially scalable process remains elusive. To contribute to this challenge, here in this study, biobased composite coatings consisting of chitosan, mucilage, and levan, were applied on sweet cherry fruits and tested for postharvest parameters in both market and cold storage conditions. Results demonstrated that the shelf life of sweet cherries can be extended until the 30th day while retaining important post-harvest properties like decreased weight loss, fungal deterioration, increased stem removal force, total flavonoid, L-ascorbic acid, and oxalic acid. Given the cost-effectiveness of the polymers used, the findings of this study indicate the feasibility of extending the shelf-life of sweet cherries on a larger scale

    A rare case of paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis leading to epileptic seizure in a patient with ovarian carcinoma

    Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis (PLE), a rare and diagnostically-challenging encephalopathy, is frequently associated with an underlying malign neoplastic tumor. Epileptic symptoms are uncommon but can be the first sign of the disease. We present a patient admitted to our intensive care unit (ICU) unit with epileptic seizure and a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) of six. All tests and investigations that had been utilized for this patient's diagnosis, including blood tests, serological analyses, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electroencephalogram (EEG) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) test results were evaluated. The patient had been diagnosed with ovarian carcinoma within the last year. The patient's cancer history, her most recent complaints and MRI results were strongly suspicious for paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis. Her neurological condition improved rapidly in a few days with steroid therapy. This case showed that any neurological deterioration based on an ovarian oncologic disease can bring PLE to mind. The possibility of PLE must be taken into consideration in patients presenting with epileptic seizures after neoplastic diagnoses

    Renal access in PNL under sonographic guidance: Do we really need to insert an open end ureteral catheter in dilated renal systems? A prospective randomized study

    Purpose: To evaluate the true necessity of open end ureteral catheter insertion in patients with moderate to severe pelvicalyceal system dilation treated with percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) under sonographic guidance. Patients and methods: 50 cases treated with PNL under sonographic guidance in prone position for solitary obstructing renal stones were evaluated. Patients were randomly divided into two groups; Group 1: Patients in whom a open end ureteral catheter was inserted prior to the procedure; Group 2: Patients receiving no catheter before PNL. In addition to the duration of the procedure as a whole and also all relevant stages as well, radiation exposure time, hospitalization period, mean nephrostomy tube duration, mean drop in Hb levels and all intra and postoperative complications have been evaluated. Results: Mean size of the stones was 308.5 ± 133.2 mm2. Mean total duration of the PNL procedure in cases with open end ureteral catheter was significantly longer than the other cases (p &lt; 0.001). Evaluation of the outcomes of the PNL procedures revealed no statistically significant difference between two groups regarding the stone-free rates (86% vs 84%). Additionally, there was no significant difference with respect to the duration of nephrostomy tube, hospitalization period and secondary procedures needed, complication rates as well as the post-operative Hb drop levels in both groups (p = 0.6830). Conclusions: Our results indicate that the placement of an open end ureteral catheter prior to a PNL procedure performed under sonographic access may not be indicated in selected cases presenting with solitary obstructing renal pelvic and/or calyceal stones

    Microvascular Tissue Transfers In The Elderly: Safety Analysis For A Challenging Area

    Background/Aim: Due to increased average life expectancy, the number of elderly patients requiring complex reconstructive microsurgical procedures is rising. Age, comorbid conditions, and location of operation are all possible risk factors. The aim of this study is to evaluate surgical outcomes to set the right criteria. Materials and methods: Between 1996 and 2014, the data of 30 patients over the age of 70, who were treated with microsurgical techniques in our clinic, were extracted from patient records and analyzed retrospectively. Results: In this patient population, flap success rate was 94%. Systemic and surgical complication rates were 40% and 48%, respectively. Complication rates were higher in head and neck cases but there was no statistically significant difference compared to reconstructions in other areas. Loss of oral lining, as a serious complication, had no effect on complications in head and neck reconstruction patients in our series. Conclusions: Flap success is comparable to younger age groups but procedures are associated with a high rate of complications Evaluating and controlling comorbid conditions is important. The American Society of Anesthesiologists scoring system is reliable in this patient population. Although complications are more common, these procedures can be performed safely in elderly populations with careful patient selection.WoSScopu
