    THE DISCOURSE OF RADICALISM AND FAMILY ROLES IN STANDING AGAINST RADICALISM REPRESENTED IN GARIN'S NUGROHO FILM "MATA TERTUTUP"

    Terrorism has been a serious problem for humanity. At least there were five terror incidents hitting Indonesia since May 8, 2018, killing at least 19 people, and 60 injured. On May 13, 2018  three suicide bombings at three churches in Surabaya, carried out by a family of six (father, mother, and four children) headed by Dita Oeprianto. Due to the serious impact of the terrorism, there is a question of why and how people involved as suicide bombers. Responding to this question, and as the counter-radicalism strategy, Garin Nugroho directed a film entitled “Mata Tertutup” (The Blindfold- 2011). The film is based on the research by Maarif Institute. This paper discusses “Mata Tertutup” through the questions of how the film represents the discourse of radicalism and family roles in standing against radicalism. This question  addresses mainly the issue of radical group’s recruitment process, and the roles of family in countering the radicalism, constructed in the film. The study shows that radicalism is represented through the recruitment process of NII which is done through a pattern of kidnapping and brainwashing. This process radicalizes young people and to the worst, produces suicide bombers. The discourse of radicalism issue also addresses the crucial roles family in saving young people from radical groups

    Identity politics in Aladdin: from Arabian Nights to Disney animated film

    This is a study of ecranisation of a popular folktale “The Story of Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp” from the Arabian Nights that is filmed by Walt Disney Feature Animation under the title “Aladdin” (1992). The comparison is included into ecranisation perspective that focuses on the identity constructed in those two narration. First, the study applies the ecranisation concept that compares the transformation of those two works, the folktale and the film. The comparison focuses on the identity politics constructed in those texts. The comparison is analyzed through Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, by applying the three stages of analysis. The first level is micro level, on the language practice. In the second level, mezo level, discusses the discourse practice that covers the intertextuality of ideas, concept as the reference in delivering the ideas. In the third level, macro level, it interprets the social context of particular events, especially the social practice in exercising their power. The discourse analysis is aimed at understanding the identity politics constructed in both of the works. Through this kind of analysis, it can be found out that the changing of identities constructed in the film has a social political context. The finding shows that the Disney’s Aladdin constructs the identity that is completely different from the folktale of Aladdin. The Aladdin’s identity in the folktale is connected with the traditional Muslim in 10th century Chinese cultural setting, while the identity constructed in the Disney’s animated film is Aladdin in Arabic setting with the American mind and values of freedom and heroism

    Globalization itself is redefined as one of society’s self-description insofar as, according to Luhmann’s theory, society is conceived as a cognitive system that can only handle information (about the world, about itself ) only through its own specific operation (communication), so that globalization affects society solely when the later communicates about the former. Among such rapid communication in globalized era, the local people’s identities is in questions. What and how the local young people construct their identities by making the use of internet portal. This paper is aimed at understanding how the local young people in Trenggalek (a rural district in southern coastal area of East Java) construct identities through a local portal of “nggalek.co”. The Trenggalek-based portal “nggalek.co” was founded last year, in 2016, and is intended as the means for communicating their localities to their own community and to the world. This paper will explore the ways the portal represents the negotiation between its local and global cultural aspects. This is interesting to study because communicating globalization also conveys an account of society’s current state, such as the description of local people, exploring local wisdom, environmental problems, and other local people’s concern on their daily life, that in the larger impact contribute to the building of “selfknowledge” and identities

    The New Image of Indian Girl in Sherman Alexie’s The Search Engine

    The current paper examines the Native American people's identity, especially the main female character's cultural identity in the short story entitled The Search Engine. Sherman Alexie, the author of the story, is a Native American writer who harnesses the Indian identity as one of the main topics. The identity presented in the main character, Corliss, shows the challenges of the stereotypes of Native American girls. For that reason, the paper aims at exploring the new Indian woman’s cultural identity represented in the main character, Corliss, in the short story The Search Engine. The study applies feminist literary criticism that enables the writers to deeply explore the issue of woman's identity among the American native people. The main character, Corliss, shows the new female image identity, in which she can challenge traditional stereotypes of Native American women. Corliss is represented as a highly literate woman, with a lot of reading on English literary works, and has concern on her Indian-ness, which is often incommensurable to her big family’s views. The main character shows the new female image of an Indian girl evidenced in her excellent literacy and attitude toward Indian and White people. She has new consciousness in seeing the Indian men and women and their relation to White people.

    Identificazione delle varianti genetiche della diidropirimidina deidrogenasi associate a grave tossicità in pazienti oncologici trattati con fluoropirimidine

    Il trattamento di molti tumori solidi è oggi affidato a farmaci noti come fluoropirimidine, nonostante il loro uso sia talvolta associato a gravi tossicità nel paziente e, in alcuni casi, possa rivelarsi letale. Dal punto di vista metabolico, il principale enzima coinvolto nell’inattivazione delle fluoropirimidine, è la diidropirimidina deidrogenasi (DPD). Il paziente portatore di varianti geniche della DPD che comportano attività enzimatica ridotta o nulla, può manifestare in seguito al trattamento chemioterapico con fluoropirimidine, alcuni tra gli effetti collaterali dovuti a tossicità. Date queste premesse, è stato svolto uno studio farmacogenetico volto a valutare i polimorfismi della DPD associati a tossicità, al fine di identificare un biomarcatore predittivo di tossicità ed escludere i pazienti a rischio, da un trattamento potenzialmente letale. Lo studio è stato diviso in due fasi: una prima fase retrospettiva, in cui si è cercato di identificare i polimorfismi associati al deficit enzimatico della DPD, attraverso analisi genetiche effettuate su pazienti che hanno sviluppato tossicità gravi, ed una fase prospettica, nella quale i pazienti sono stati esaminati per la presenza della mutazione maggiormente implicata nelle reazioni avverse gravi. L’analisi è stata effettuata a partire da un campione di sangue periferico da cui è stato estratto DNA genomico, amplificato con Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), analizzato in Denaturing High Performance Liquid Chromatography (DHPLC) e sequenziato, oppure analizzato in PCR Real Time. Dall’analisi sono emersi sette polimorfismi maggiormente associati a tossicità: 496A>G, 1601G>A, 1627A>G, 1896T>C, IVS14+1G>A, 2194G>A, 2846A>T. Il risultato della genotipizzazione, valutato attraverso gli opportuni test statistici, potrà essere utilizzato come screening pre-trattamento al fine di individuare i pazienti con genotipo a rischio e consigliare loro uno schema terapeutico personalizzato

    Teaching On The Prairie: Narrative Lived Experiences Of Self, Belonging, And Place From Two Beginning Teachers In Rural North Dakota Schools

    Retaining rural Midwestern teachers is problematic for many K-12 school districts. Through interviews with two first year teachers in rural North Dakota schools, this study considered what experiences contributed to a successful beginning teaching career in a rural school. It was thought that teacher education preparation pertaining to rural schools specifically would increase the likelihood of retention for these beginning teachers. Rural communities and schools in North Dakota are plentiful and provide the stepping-stone into the teaching profession for many beginning teachers. The choice to stay in the rural school or move into a larger school community has a significant impact. Rural school boards need tools to provide successful beginning experiences for these teachers. Additionally, teacher preparation courses can explore the development of rural field experiences that may also increase the likelihood of success for the beginning teachers. This narrative study yielded three major themes from the data collection: sense of place, sense of self, and sense of belonging. As these beginning teachers experienced various levels of expectations, influences, and relationships over the course of their first year in rural schools, they grew in their sense of self, place, and belonging. As they shared their stories, it was found that they did not have specific teacher preparation for rural schools; however, this study found that relationships with students, colleagues, and administrators were strong factors for retention. Remembering that it takes a village to raise a teacher, and if the village wants to retain teachers, it may need to change the lens through which they are prepared

    Altruisme pada Relawan Mahasiswa

    Seiring dengan kemajuan teknologi dan komunikasi pada saat ini semakin banyak individu yang mementingkan dirinya sendiri atau berkurangnya rasa tolong menolong antara sesama. Namun demikian tidak semua individu bersikap seperti itu, karena masih banyak juga individu yang peduli dengan orang lain disekitarnya dengan memberikan pertolongan kepada orang lain yang sedang membutuhkan pertolongan. Perilaku menolong ini tampak pada aktivitas sukarela yang dilakukan oleh mahasiswa Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta yang terjun sebagai relawan. Mereka terjun dibawah naungan dari organisasi pecinta alam, antara lain Malimpa, Psycopala dan dari non pecinta alam yaitu Laboratorium Psikologi. Relawan mahasiswa ini sebagian besar memberikan pertolongan dengan terjun langsung ke lokasi bencana dan memberika bantuan berupa logistic, maupun program-program pemulihan bencana. Tujuan yang ingin dicapai dalam penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana altruisme pada relawan mahasiswa serta factor-faktor yang mempengaruhinya. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di daerah Surakarta khususnya di Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. Informan penelitian ini diambil secara snowball dan puposive sampling sebanyak lima orang. Sumber data yang berupa kata-kata yang dikumpulkan menggunakan metode wawancara serta dengan metode observasi. Analisis data yang digunakan adalah analisis deskriptif yaitu berupa paparan, uraian dan gambaran. Dari hasi analisis diperoleh bahwa altruisme pada relawan mahasiswa mencakup tiga aspek yaitu perilaku memberi, empati dan sukarela. Perilaku memberi meliputi barang, tenaga dan logistik. Empati meliputi perasaan sedih dan terharu ketika mengetahui keadaan korban. Sukarela adalah ketika informan tidak mempertimbangkan untung rugi untuk terjun menjadi relawan. Sedangkan faktor yang mempengaruhi adalah nilai moral dan agama, tanggung jawab dan norma timbal balik

    Abstrak Pendidikan merupakan tempat membina generasi muda agar menjadi manusia yang berkualitas di masa depan. Salah satunya dalam pembelajaran pendidikan jasmani, olahraga dan kesehatan di sekolah. Tujuan diadakan  penelitian  ini  untuk  mengetahui seberapa  besar  keterlaksanaan pembelajaran  pendidikan jasmani olahraga dan kesehatan khususnya pada jenjang Sekolah Menengah Pertama. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Oleh sebab itu, peneliti ini menggunakan populasi dan menggunakan angket sebagai instrument pengumpulan data. Terdapat 5 Populasi di wilayah Surabaya setelah dirandom dan yang terpilih adalah Surabaya Pusat. Surabaya Pusat terdapat 4 sekolah inklusi di Surabaya yaitu SMPN 4 Surabaya, SMPN 37 Surabaya, SMPN 43 Surabaya, SMPN46 Surabaya. Penganalisisan data hasil pengisian intrumen kuesioner oleh responden. Terdapat dua responden dalam penelitian ini yakni Kepala Sekolah dan Guru Pendidikan Jasmani Olahraga dan Kesehatan. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa keterlaksanaan pembelajaran pendidikan jasmani olahraga dan kesehatan di sekolah inklusi di Surabaya Pusat sudah baik dengan presentase 86,86%. Kata Kunci: Keterlaksanaan pembelajaran Pendidikan Jasmani Olahraga dan Kesehatan di  sekolah inklusi Abstract Education is a place to foster the young generation to become a man of quality in the future. One of them in teaching physical education, sport and health in schools. The purpose of this study was to determine how actualized physical education learning and healthy, especially in the junior high school level. The type of this research is qualitative descriptive. Therefore, researchers use population and using questionnaires as a data collection instrument. The population of this study is the inclusion of four schools in Surabaya, SMPN 4 Surabaya, SMPN 37 Surabaya, Surabaya SMPN 43 and SMPN 46 Surabaya. Analyzing data from the instrument filling the questionnaire by respondents. There are two respondents in this study the headmaster and Physical Education Sports and Health teachers. The  results  showed  that  actualized  physical  education  learning  and  healthy  in  inclusion  school  at Surabaya Center has been good with a percentage of 86,86%.
