    Isothermal crystallization kinetics and morphology of double crystalline PCL/PBS blends mixed with a polycarbonate/MWCNTs masterbatch

    In this work, the 70/30 and 30/70 w/w polycaprolactone (PCL)/polybutylene succinate (PBS) blends and their corresponding PCL/PBS/(polycarbonate (PC)/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) masterbatch) nanocomposites were prepared in a twin-screw extruder. The nanocomposites contained 1.0 and 4.0 wt% MWCNTs. The blends showed a sea-island morphology typical of immiscible blends. For the nanocomposites, three phases were formed: (i) The matrix (either PCL- or PBS-rich phase depending on the composition), (ii) dispersed polymer droplets of small size (either PCL- or PBS-rich phase depending on the composition), and (iii) dispersed aggregates of tens of micron sizes identified as PC/MWCNTs masterbatch. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) results showed that although most MWCNTs were located in the PC dispersed phase, some of them migrated to the polymer matrix. This is due to the partial miscibility and intimate contact at the interfaces between blend components. Non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) scans for the PCL/PBS blends showed an increase in the crystallization temperature (Tc) of the PCL-rich phase indicating a nucleation effect caused by the PBS-rich phase. For the nanocomposites, there was a decrease in Tc values. This was attributed to a competition between two effects: (1) The partial miscibility of the PC-rich and the PCL-rich and PBS-rich phases, and (2) the nucleation effect of the MWCNTs. The decrease in Tc values indicated that miscibility was the dominating effect. Isothermal crystallization results showed that the nanocomposites crystallized slower than the neat blends and the homopolymers. The introduction of the masterbatch generally increased the thermal conductivity of the blend nanocomposites and affected the mechanical properties.Thandi P.     Arterial stiffness and hand osteoarthritis: a novel relationship?

    SummaryObjectiveOsteoarthritis (OA) and vascular stiffening may share elements of common pathogenesis, but their potential relatedness has been the focus of little prior inquiry. We tested the hypothesis that these two aging-associated conditions are related to each other.MethodWe analyzed cross-sectional data from 256 participants of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA), a study of normative aging. All underwent measurement of arterial pulse wave velocity (PWV), an index of vascular stiffness, as well as hand radiographs that were graded for evidence of OA. Twenty total joints across three joint groups (distal interphalangeal [DIP], proximal interphalangeal [PIP], carpal-metacarpal [CMC]) were each assigned a Kellgren–Lawrence grade (K–L) of 0 (normal) through 4 (severe), with K–L grades ≥2 considered evidence of definite OA. Radiographic hand OA was defined as definite OA changes in at least two of the three anatomic hand sites (DIP, PIP, CMC). OA burden was represented by the total number of affected OA joints, and a cumulative K–L grade was aggregated across all hand joint groups. The relationship of PWV with these three measures of hand OA was assessed by linear regression.ResultsUpon univariate analysis, the presence of radiographic hand OA (β=218.1, P<0.01), the total number of OA joints (β=32.9, P<0.01), and the cumulative K–L grade across all joint groups (β=12.2, P<0.01) were each associated with increased PWV. These associations, however, were no longer significant in age-adjusted models.ConclusionAlthough significant individual relationships between PWV and several measures of hand OA were observed, these associations were largely attributable to the confounding effect of age

    One of the most exciting features of the hole centers CuO_{4}^{5-} in doped cuprates is an unusually complicated ground state which is the result of the electronic quasi-degeneracy. An additional hole, doped to the basic CuO_{4}^{6-} cluster with the b_{1g} hole can occupy both the same hybrid Cu3d-O2p orbital state resulting in a Zhang-Rice singlet ^1A_{1g} and the purely oxygen e_u molecular orbital resulting in a singlet or triplet ^{1,3}E_u term with the close energies.     Multiplicity correlations of intermediate-mass fragments with pions and fast protons in 12C + 197Au

    Low-energy pi+ (E < 35 MeV) from 12C+197Au collisions at incident energies from 300 to 1800 MeV per nucleon were detected with the Si-Si(Li)-CsI(Tl) calibration telescopes of the INDRA multidetector. The inclusive angular distributions are approximately isotropic, consistent with multiple rescattering in the target spectator. The multiplicity correlations of the low-energy pions and of energetic protons (E > 150 MeV) with intermediate-mass fragments were determined from the measured coincidence data. The deduced correlation functions 1 + R \approx 1.3 for inclusive event samples reflect the strong correlations evident from the common impact-parameter dependence of the considered multiplicities. For narrow impact-parameter bins (based on charged-particle multiplicity), the correlation functions are close to unity and do not indicate strong additional correlations. Only for pions at high particle multiplicities (central collisions) a weak anticorrelation is observed, probably due to a limited competition between these emissions. Overall, the results are consistent with the equilibrium assumption made in statistical multifragmentation scenarios. Predictions obtained with intranuclear cascade models coupled to the Statistical Multifragmentation Model are in good agreement with the experimental data.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, subm. to EPJ

    Inferring Deleterious-Mutation Parameters in Natural Daphnia Populations

    Deng and Lynch (1, 2) proposed to characterize deleterious genomic mutations from changes in the mean and genetic variance of fitness traits upon selfing in outcrossing populations. Such observations can be readily acquired in cyclical parthenogens. Selfing and life-table experiments were performed for two such Daphnia populations. A significant inbreeding depression and an increase of genetic variance for all traits analyzed were observed. Deng and Lynch's (2) procedures were employed to estimate the genomic mutation rate (U), mean dominance coefficient ( [Image: see text] ), mean selection coefficient ( [Image: see text] ), and scaled genomic mutational variance ( [Image: see text] ).     Single Top Production as a Window to Physics Beyond the Standard Model

    Production of single top quarks at a high energy hadron collider is studied as a means to identify physics beyond the standard model related to the electroweak symmetry breaking. The sensitivity of the ss-channel WW^* mode, the tt-channel WW-gluon fusion mode, and the \tw mode to various possible forms of new physics is assessed, and it is found that the three modes are sensitive to different forms of new physics, indicating that they provide complimentary information about the properties of the top quark.     Measurement of the Charged Multiplicities in b, c and Light Quark Events from Z0 Decays

    Average charged multiplicities have been measured separately in bb, cc and light quark (u,d,su,d,s) events from Z0Z^0 decays measured in the SLD experiment. Impact parameters of charged tracks were used to select enriched samples of bb and light quark events, and reconstructed charmed mesons were used to select cc quark events. We measured the charged multiplicities: nˉuds=20.21±0.10(stat.)±0.22(syst.)\bar{n}_{uds} = 20.21 \pm 0.10 (\rm{stat.})\pm 0.22(\rm{syst.}), nˉc=21.28±0.46(stat.)0.36+0.41(syst.)\bar{n}_{c} = 21.28 \pm 0.46(\rm{stat.}) ^{+0.41}_{-0.36}(\rm{syst.}) nˉb=23.14±0.10(stat.)0.37+0.38(syst.)\bar{n}_{b} = 23.14 \pm 0.10(\rm{stat.}) ^{+0.38}_{-0.37}(\rm{syst.}), from which we derived the differences between the total average charged multiplicities of cc or bb quark events and light quark events: Δnˉc=1.07±0.47(stat.)0.30+0.36(syst.)\Delta \bar{n}_c = 1.07 \pm 0.47(\rm{stat.})^{+0.36}_{-0.30}(\rm{syst.}) and Δnˉb=2.93±0.14(stat.)0.29+0.30(syst.)\Delta \bar{n}_b = 2.93 \pm 0.14(\rm{stat.})^{+0.30}_{-0.29}(\rm{syst.}). We compared these measurements with those at lower center-of-mass energies and with perturbative QCD predictions.
