    Students’ violation of cooperative principle in thesis exams

    This study aims to find out and describe the maxim of conversation most violated by students and the types of maxim violation in thesis exams. This is a kind of descriptive qualitative research. The data are utterances containing maxim violations by the students in thesis exams at the department of English education, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, State Islamic University of Raden Intan Lampung in 2018/2019 academic year. The researcher used a documentation method of the recordings of students’ thesis exams, and a notetaking technique in collecting the data. The result of the research shows that among the 13 utterances, quantity maxim was violated most with 5 utterances (38.46%), subsequently followed by relation maxim with 4 utterances (30.76%). Meanwhile both quality and manner maxims placed the third maxims most violated by the students, each with 2 utterances (15.38%) respectively. In addition, maxims of quantity, quality, relation, and manner are violated by the students in thesis exams, namely quantity, quality, relation, and manner maxims. The violations are in the form of exaggerated information for quantity maxim, untrue information for quality maxim, irrelevant information for relation maxim, and confusing information for manner maxim

    A Correlational Study on the Students’ Quranic Memorization and Their English Vocabulary Retention

    This study aims to know whether there is a correlation between students’ Quranic memorization and their English vocabulary retention. This study chose 28 of seventh graders at Islamic Junior High School Az-Zahra Lampung in 2018/2019 academic year as the sample by means of cluster random sampling technique. This study applied correlational research design. The documented data of Quranic memorization of learners and the English vocabulary preservation were collected from the test and then analyzed for hypothetical testing employing Pearson's Product Moment equation. The outcome of the hypothetical test shows that Sig. (value) was generated by the value of significance = 0.000 < α = 0.05. It means the acceptance of Ha and the rejection of H0. Furthermore, based on the r value interpretation table, it is known that the observed r is a high correlation as the value of observed r is 0.622 in the 0.600 – 0.800 level. It can therefore be inferred that there is a significant correlation between the Quranic memorization of learners and the acquisition of English vocabulary

    A SEMIO-PRAGMATIC ANALYSIS OF THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION’S CAMPAIGN POSTERS AGAINST COVID-19

    The Covid-19 pandemic has claimed hundreds of thousands of human lives in various parts of the world. As an authoritative body, the World Health Organization (henceforth WHO) has made efforts to prevent the Covid-19 outbreak by releasing appealing messages through posters. The study aims to to explore the types of linguistic elements used in the WHO posters and to uncover the meanings of the elements to express the messages. The study employed descriptive qualitative research using a semio-pragmatic analysis framework. The data were presented in the form of linguistic elements in posters themed #HealthyAtHome, taken from the World Health Organization’s official website. The study found two linguistic elements as poster-forming elements, namely visual and verbal elements. Through icons, indexes, and symbols, visual elements reinforce the meaning of the poster’s theme so that it is easily understood by readers. Meanwhile, verbal elements are realized by the directive speech to facilitate understanding of the intended message as well as indirective speech to consider politeness in delivering the messages. The implication of this study is to increase public knowledge and awareness on the best health practices that can be performed at home during the pandemic

    Coreferential Devices in the Quranic Interpretation

    This article mainly discusses the coreference in the Quranic interpretation of Surah Albaqarah by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. The aims of the research are: to describe and explain the coreference types found in the Quranic interpretation, the coreference devices, and relationship types of the coreferential devices. The is a kind of descriptive qualitative research. The population consisted 286 interpretation texts of Surah Al-Baqarah with 112 samples taken as the data of the research chosen by using purposive sampling technique. The result of the research shows that the coreference types found in the Quranic interpretation are: repetition (6,55%), lexical change (18,03%), substitution (50,81%) and ellipsis (24,59%). Meanwhile, the coreferential devices found are: repetition, lexical change, and substitution. Finally, the relationship types of the co-referential devices are anaphoric (88,52%) and cataphoric (11,48%)

    STUDENTS GRAMMATICAL ERROR IN USING SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

    Students error analysis is very important for helping English as a Foreign Learners (EFL) teachers to develop their teaching materials, assessments and methods. The study aims to describe and analyze the students grammatical error in the use of simple present tense, and the cause of errors by the eleventh grade students of Senior High School (SMAN) 4 Bandar Lampung in the school year of 2018/2019. This is a kind of descriptive qualitative study, in which the data consisted of students’ sentences containing errors in the use of simple present in the text of analytical exposition, viewed from Linguistic Category Taxonomy (LCT). The study discovers that there are five types of errors based on LCT. They are errors of noun phrase verb phrase, verb-andverb construction, word order and transformation.     Cohesive Markers Found in Thesis Abstracts

    The research aims to describe and analyze the lexically and grammatically cohesivemarkers found in students’ thesis abstracts. This is a kind of descriptive-qualitativeresearch. The population of the research consisted of all sentences found in nineabstracts. Meanwhile, the sample included all sentences containing the cohesive markers taken by using purposive sampling technique. The result of the research shows that the lexically cohesive markers found in the data of lexical cohesion are: synonym (18%),repetition (54%), superordinate (12%), and collocation (16%). In addition, the grammatically cohesive markers found in the data of grammatical cohesion are: reference (15%), conjunction (39%), substitution (21%) and ellipsis (25%)

The result of the research shows that the father's roles in children's development and education include teaching children on self-control and social values. In addition, the father's involvement in children's development and education gives a positive impact to the children' cognitive, emotional, and social aspects, as well as their physical condition

    Penelitian yang berjudul “Relasi Makna Paradigmatik-Sintagmatik Konstruksi Berprefiks Negatif Bahasa Inggris: Satu Kajian Morfosintaktis dan Semantis” ini bertujuan (i) merumuskan dan menganalisis jenis konstruksi derivasional yang dibentuk oleh prefiks negatif bahasa Inggris; (ii) merumuskan dan menganalisis konstruksi prefiks negatif bahasa Inggris secara morfosintaktis; (iii) mendeskripsikan dan menganalisis relasi makna paradigmatik-sintagmatik yang didukung oleh prefiks negatif bahasa Inggris. Jenis penelitian ini deskriptifkualitatif dengan menggunakan metode kajian distribusional dalam analisis data. Landasan teori yang digunakan mencakup morfologi, sintaksis, dan semantik. Data penelitian berupa kalimat-kalimat yang mengandung konstruksi prefiks negatif, yang dijaring dari novel-novel dan buku-buku ilmiah berbahasa Inggris. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa secara struktural, jenis konstruksi derivasional yang mengalami perubahan kelas kata, yaitu (a) nominal deverba: un- + V; (b) nominal deadjektiva: un- + Adj; (c) verbal denomina: dis-, un- + N; (d) verbal deadjektiva: dis- + Adj; (e) adjektival denomina: anti-, non- + N, sedangkan derivasi yang mengalami pemertahanan kelas kata, yaitu (a) nominal: anti-, de-, dis-, im-, in-, mal-, mis-, non-, semi-, un- + N; (b) verbal: de-, dis-, mis-, un- + V; (c) adjektival: ab-, anti-, counter-, de-, dis-, dys-, il-, im-, in-, ir-, mal-, mis-, non-, un- + Adj; dan (d) adverbial: ab-, dis-, il-, im-, in-, ir-, non-, un- + Adv. Secara morfologis, konstruksi berprefiks negatif bahasa Inggris dibedakan atas, konstruksi dengan (a) dua konstituen, (b) tiga konstituen, dan (c) empat konstituen. Secara sintaktis, konstruksi berprefiks negatif berupa, konstituen induk dan pewatas dalam FN, FV, FAdj; induk dalam FV, FAdj, FAdv; pewatas dalam FN, FV, FAdj; aditif, alternatif, kontras, apositif dalam FEn; objektif, konektif, direktif dalam FE. Secara paradigmatis, sinonimi didukung oleh de-, im-, un-; hiponimi oleh ab-, mal- ; meronimi oleh de-, semi; antonimi oleh anti-, counter-, de-, dis-, dys-, il-, im-, in-, ir-, mal-, mis-, non-, un-.
