Código: 5401-1401-1030Different drying schedules were investigated to decrease drying time of Tectona grandis L. wood from juvenile plantations, using the drying rate (DR) to reduce time. The DR value was 20% per day during the first stages and by the time the wood reached 30% of moisture content (MC), the DR remained in 8% per day until the end of drying. The initial moisture content (MCi) ranged between 92 and 115%, MCi was affected by grain pattern and heartwood percentage. The final moisture content (MCf) differed in 2.0% in relation to the MC targeted for this study. Drying time can be reduced from 140 hours to 105 hours, maintaining DR conditions and saving 33% of energy consumption. DR is affected by moisture content and drying time and this behavior can be modeled mathematically by the equation Y = a*t + b. In these relations, the factors with greatest influence were dry-bulb temperature and wet-bulb depression. Both relations show an inflexion point in the relation DR-MC, 80% in fast drying schedule and 40% in slow drying schedule. This MC indicates the point where the DR must be changed
Due to its excellent growth rate and productivity, Gmelina arborea (Roxb.) is widely used for commercial reforestation in Costa Rica. However during the lumber drying process, the wooden boards show non-uniform values of final moisture content (MC). The low uniformity in final MC is caused by the presence of "wet pockets", originated during the growing process of the tree. During the wood drying process, the regions with wet pockets present zones with a high MC, which are hard to detect with traditional methods for MC measurements. This article shows that it is possible to detect and to set the limits of the presence of wet wood in Gmelina arborea boards using scanning computed tomography (CT-scanning), a technique applied in medical diagnostic.

Rodent consumption by Philodryas psammophidea (Serpentes: Colubridae), from the Inter-andean Dry Valleys of Central Bolivia
In May 18, 2009 we found an adult female of Philodryas psammophidea (930 mm SVL), at a side of a crop field in the Tabacal valley (18º23’7.42” S – 64º38’7.88”W, 2015 m), Narciso Campero province southern Cochabamba, Bolivia. Ecologically, this valley belongs to the Inter-Andean Dry Forests of Bolivia. In the stomach of thesnake probably killed by a settler, therewas an adult female of Graomys domorum (Phyllotini; Sigmodontidae), a native rodent species widely distributed in the region.Asociación Herpetológica Argentina (AHA
Secadora solar
The project “Solar Dryer” was raised as a strength activity in the School of Forestry
Engineering (EIFO). The activity results are the solar kiln and the test of drying wood, all of
them will permit to make appropriate adjustments to the model to ensure efficiency in the
solar dryer model. The cost of construction was assumed in full by the EIFO through funds
generated by the sale of services, specifically using the count “drying wood production”.
The innovative aspect of this construction is the energy consumption because it is very
low, the solar dryers are systems that use clean technology, the driving force working in
the dryer is based on the use of the heat, generated by the sun's rays.
The activities of this strength activity consisted in the construction of the solar kiln for
drying wood, obtain information from construction costs, and the test of dry, where the
solar dryer controlled environmental conditions and make possible the drying of the wood.
For the test was used wood of teak (Tectona grandis) 2,54 cm of thickness, this specie is
widely used in commercial reforestation in Costa Rica.
This strength activity met all the goals set; in addition, it was prepared an informative
brochure about solar dryers aspects and a technical inform document that is at this
moment, in press. It included detailed information related to investment costs, design, and
the cost per meter cubic of drying wood.
After the drying test, it was identified the needed to develop new research projects for
analyze more detail about the efficiency of the dryer, install an automatic control and
monitoring the environmental conditions from the internal and external kiln. So it was
visualized the need to engage in this project other possible project researcher from others
schools as Electronics and Electromechanical. In fact, it should be mentioned that there is
need to transfer this technology to the national productive sector for its implementation in
productivity chains
The burden of 14 hr-HPV genotypes in women attending routine cervical cancer screening in 20 states of Mexico: a cross-sectional study
In Mexico, HPV vaccines available immunize against genotypes 16/18 and 16/18/6/11; however, there is limited surveillance about carcinogenic subtypes in different states of the country that allow evaluating the effectiveness of vaccination and cervical cancer screening programs. Here, we report the regional and age-specific prevalence of 14 hr-HPV genotypes as well as their prevalence in abnormal cytology (from ASCUS to cervical cancer) among Mexican women which were undergoing from cervical cancer screening in the Salud Digna clinics in 20 states of the country. This study includes women with social security from the majority of public health institutions (IMSS, ISSSTE, SEMAR, and PEMEX), and women without social security. For cervical cancer screening, we used the SurePath liquid-based cytology and the BD Onclarity HPV Assay. From December 1, 2016, to August 2, 2018, the hr-HPV prevalence among 60,135 women was 24.78%, the most prevalent types were HPV 16 (4.13%), HPV 31 (4.12%) and HPV 51 (3.39%), while HPV 18 (1.70%) was less prevalent among infected women. Interestingly, the genotypes not covered by current vaccines in Mexico were commonly found in precancerous lesions, evidencing their carcinogenic potential, so it is necessary to increase their surveillance and inclusion in cervical cancer screening triage. We gratefully acknowledge to Iromy Meza, Jessica Avitia, and Oswaldo Carrillo for their technical support in obtaining databases during this project. Also, we want to thanks the staff of the Salud Digna clinics and the National Reference Center of Salud Digna for their support during this work. This work was funding by Salud Digna
In this paper 221 forest trees are grouped according to their habitat preferences into species preferring humid or dry and/or saline habitats or indifferent to the habitat type. Eleven functional traits classes (seeds per tree, seed size, seed weight, seeds per fruit, tolerance to shade, selectivity to habitat, sclerophylly, wood density, foliar area, tree height and tree volume) are arranged 1 to 4 according to a successional gradient. The strategies of forest trees are identified by analyzing the species matrices for humid forest ecosystems (joining species preferring humid habitats together with those indifferent to the habitat type) and for dry and/or saline ecosystems (joining species preferring dry and/or saline habitats and the ones indifferent to the habitat type). Both matrices are processed using the average taxonomic distance as the interval coefficient and by clustering analysis to discover successional organization patterns. The complexity of r-K continuum is discussed by focusing the K behavior of some variables among Pioneers (commonly r strategists) or the r behavior of some variables among Stabilizers (commonly K strategists). A new system of classification is presented as a hypothesis for discovering successional patterns in tropical forests. Depto. de Biodiversidad, Ecología y EvoluciónFac. de Ciencias BiológicasTRUEInternational Foundation for Science (IFS) (Sweden)MacArthur Foundation and D. Surface chemical and color characterization of juvenile tectona grandis wood subjected to steam-drying treatments
ArtículoThe color of Tectona grandis wood is an attribute that favors its commercialization, however, wood
color from fast-growth plantation trees is clear and lacks uniformity. The aim of this work is to
characterize steamed teak wood by means of the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)
and L a b color systems. Two moisture conditions (green and 50%) and two grain patterns (°at
and quarter) of boards were analyzed through the application of di®erent steaming times (0, 3, 6, 9,
12, 15 and 18 h). The FTIR results showed that the bands at 1158, 1231, 1373 and 1419 cm 1 did not
show any change with steaming, whereas the bands at 1053, 1108, 1453, 1506, 1536, 1558, 1595,
1652, 1683, 1700 and 1733 cm 1 presented a decrease in the intensity with the steaming time. The
band at 1318 cm 1 was the only one that increased. Lightness (L ) was the most a®ected parameter,
followed by yellowness (b ), while redness (a ) showed the smallest change. Surface color change
( E ) presented the lowest value between 3 h and 6 h of steam-drying in the boards with °at grain,
whereas for boards with quarter grain, the smallest E value was obtained after 18 h of steaming
